Kerbal Relay Race

In this challenge, you will have to build a plane, a boat, a rover, and a rocket and complete the course as fast as possible!

Rules:

-Mods allowed within reason. No cheats (alt-f12 or the like) except, you may hyperedit your rover and boat to the starting points for those legs if you wish. They aren't too far away from KSC so those who don't use hyperedit may drive their vehicles there with infinite fuel to get them to their starting points. Don't use infinite fuel during the race!

Hyperedit coordinates: Rover Start = (-1.719, 284.247), Boat Start = (-2.276, 284.082)

-You cannot use the same vehicle for two legs (ie, no spaceplanes, seaplanes, flying rovers, or amphibious rovers). Exception - the boat can drive onto land after it passes Boat Waypoint 1.

-The rover must use rover wheels, not airplane landing gear, and it must rely only on its wheels for propulsion.

-The rocket cannot use airbreathing engines.

-The plane must start on the runway and the rocket must start on the launchpad. The other vehicles must start within 100m of the previous leg's finish flag. The boat has to start in the water.

-The same Kerbal must be aboard the craft all four legs, but you can have additional pilots if you wish.

You can either dock and use stock crew-transfer or EVA and get into the next vehicle.

-The time you score is the MET for your PLANE since this is the first leg. It will start once you take off and continue running as you complete the rest of the challenge. You need a screenshot at the end in map view, focused on your plane, and showing your rocket in orbit.

Course: The persistent file provided has flags planted marking the course. Before you start, put all your vehicles in their starting positions.

-Start your plane on the runway, fly around Plane Waypoint 1 at lower altitude than the flag then fly to the plane finish.

-Get your Kerbal into the rover, drive between the two flags labelled Rover Waypoint 1 and drive to the rover finish.

-Get in the boat, float around Boat Waypoint 1. Your boat can leave the water anytime after the waypoint, or you can get out and run.

-Run to the launchpad, get into your rocket, and get into orbit to finish. Switch back to the plane and take a screenshot in map view with the MET visible.

As always, constructive criticism is welcome. I'll create more different race courses if this is popular.

The rules are pretty clear about how many vehicles to use (four) and how many need to be moved into position first (two). Hyperedit is completely optional – the sites are close enough to drive your rover and boat into position.

@sdj64:

I have never enjoyed abusing KSP's water physics – are we allowed to use downloaded boats?

The intent of the challenge is to design your own craft, but sure you can use a downloaded boat. I don't think it would be an advantage over other players that design their own. Remember since mods are allowed you can use a boat parts mod or Firespitter's seaplane floats if you want dedicated floating parts.

Had to try this and tried 50 times or so last night, but the only thing I got was frustration. So after sleeping it off I managed to do it the second time around. I could very likely do better if I land the plane closer to the rover using the parachutes at a lower altitude, don't flip the rover over, don't crash the boat upon landing and having to walk 1.5 kilometers and if I could just race better. But at least now there's a precedent for others to do better.

Time: 32 minutes and 32 seconds to orbit (some more screenshots to show the craft on the ground are really there)

Nice challenge!

  • 2 months later...

Sounded like a fun challenge, so I gave it a go.

Below is a video of my attempt (with some fast-forwarding and quickloads and not-the-best recording software)

Total Time: 13:36

Plane leg: 3:19

Rover leg: 5:30

Ship leg: 2:05

Rocket leg: 1:55

All vehicle transfers: 0:47

All vehicles are completely stock. Hyperedit was used to put vehicles into their starting positions.

I may have used a missile to transfer Jeb between the boat and the rocket. I didn't see any rules that said I couldn't...

Anyway, here it is:

I give it another shot later-I think I can knock off another minute.

Also, cool challenge. I'd suggest incorporating rocket cars in the next one, since wheel-powered rovers are a bit limited.

Great Job! Funny looking vehicles but I can see lots of time-saving techniques involved. Yes, there's no rule against the missile but maybe there should be. If I do make a second track I'll probably cut out the boat part entirely and make the rover the last leg before the lauchpad. But that reduces the variety of tracks that can be made.

This is kind of an old challenge and didn't get much attention so maybe it deserves a remake.
