Finally noticed the "Title" editing field =p

Using the biggest engines Stock KSP has to offer, this shuttle can haul a rather large amount of cargo in it's cargo bay, and return it safely to Kerbin. Uses similar way of hiding large engines in the aft of the orbiter as Rune used for his shuttle: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/104705-Kerbal-Transportation-System-MkV-The-most-accurate-STS-replica-I-ve-done%21

Works fully with completely stock installs! But if you have FAR installed, it's even better:

- Realistic Body Flap to control pitch during reentry! (Action group 9 and 10 to decrease and increase flap setting)

- Split-Rudder speed brake to control your glide!

This will allow you to re-enter at up to a 30 degree AOA (almost like the real thing) and make a safe re-entry even with Deadly Reentry!

Much larger engines than my previous replica (http://kerbalx.com/crafts/631) , but that makes it actually able to haul useful amounts of cargo while remaining fully balanced. Shuttles can be flow at 100% throttle almost until complete fuel depletion, which gets you to some ridiculously high orbits if you use FAR.

I would suggest you install a mod such as Kerbal Engineer or VOID in order to keep an eye on your trajectory. If you have FAR, be sure to reduce your flap setting to 0 before you launch (AG9).

Alternatively, MechJeb can be used to fully control it to orbit if you need.

For re-entry, suggest a periapsis of about 25-30km and AOA of between 20 and 30 degrees. It unfortunately does not fly the S-Turns very well, or at least I haven't been able to. With FAR, I suggest using maximum flap until you fall below about 1500m/s, then gradually reduce it as you continue to slow.

--------

Action groups (Orbiter):

AG1 - Shutdown SSMEs

AG3 - Toggle OMS engines

Abort - Shutdown and separate boosters

All craft FAR-only:

AG9 - Decrease Body Flap

AG10 - Increase Body Flap

SCA:

AG2 - Release Orbiter (suggest full flaps, engines idle, and 20degree nose down before release)

AG7 - Decrease SCA wing flaps

AG8 - Increase SCA wing flaps

STA Gulfstream:

AG1 - Toggle main gear only

Super Heavy-Lift Shuttle:

Instead of OMS assist after booster separation, this shuttle requires OMS assist just before booster burnout to help keep stable. Afterwards it should be fine until the ET starts draining from the bottom-most tank, where you'll once again need OMS assist and also throttle WAY down to about 5-10% in order to maintain control.

Well I got orbit and landed at KSC runway. Empty. Not bad. Stock, not FAR.

I am curious though if your shuttle can ferry a full orange tank and large full RCS tank into orbit... the ultimate proof of a vessel's cargo utility. I'm working on tweaking the shuttle fuel settings to accomplish this. I do know that such a full orange tank and full rcs tank is not a good idea on a return from orbit though. The shuttle falls faster than a stone. heh.

Nicely done, I still haven't managed to get my reentry point right to make the runway consistently.

I have a version of the exact shuttle with a 15ish ton cargo of Spacehab, I actually found it easier to simply adjust the angle on the centre SSME slightly to compensate rather than play with the fuel loads.

I know it has enough excess delta-v to do heavier cargos with FAR, but stock might be cutting it close, the lower atmosphere really sucks up a lot in stock.

I have issues loading that gulfstream. It just sits on the runway. Ended up throwing some rockomax thrusters on it and it still won't budge. Removed the rear wheels and it still floats like it had real wheels. Not sure how to "unstick" it from the runway.

Yes it can =) Just had to adjust the SSME angles slightly, and had to put up with saturated controls for a little bit, but it made it quite easily with FAR. Will try with stock later if I have time.

edit: whops noticed you wanted a full RCS tank too? lol will try later :)

I wouldn't try to land with it though. Maybe with FAR, definitely not stock!

That's a new one. Do you have any mods installed? Any luck removing and re-installing the wheels?

Crowning achievement is just an orange tank. Epic would be orange tank and rcs. In stock. But my multiplayer group would be happy if we can just find a shuttle that can orbit a full tank and a bit of docking hardware (two Sr ports on the tank). Westi's shuttle is one bay too small but can lift pretty much anything else. Your shuttle is practical once I can certify it for fuel delivery. If so, then it should be able to launch most any hardware that can fit in your bay, which would be saying a lot.

If the fix is as simple as tilting an engine... great!

Challenge accepted :D

That wasn't easy though. Stock atmosphere is seriously soupy. Tank is so heavy that all RCS/OMS/SSME really needed repointing, and you need transfer fuel back and forth a bit in the ET gets complicated as it empties......but Mechjeb was able to fly it up until about 2000m/s before I needed to start transferring fuel around.

Also launched it off my SCA a couple times and tweaked the wing a bit, it'll land safely now if the cargo bay orange and RCS tanks are empty.....don't even try if it's full though!

Will see if I can tweak it some more. :)

So you designed a Mark 3 class realistic Space Transportation System capable of putting into orbit a full orange fuel tank and a full large yellow RCS tank? You sir are awesome!!!!!!!!

You seriously have outclassed 99% of all current space shuttle designers. If there was a Challenge for sending up an orange tank into orbit with true class and style, this would be a winner. (Edit: scratch that, I posted the challenge here!)

Can I haz craft file of such epic fuel truck? :D

And don't worry about returning with full tanks. I don't think it's something NASA would do anyways. Lightening loads would be the name of the game for safety, not bringing home liquid gold from orbit. I just won't plan on doing an RTLS with your up-goer-5+OMS with this kind of cargo from the pad. :D

Yikes! Not worthy of such high praise! :0.0::blush:

This is the craft I first got it into orbit with: http://kerbalx.com/crafts/779

Not really up to my standards for flyability though. I think I've figured out a way to do away with the extra tanks and fuel transfers via some convoluted fuel line plumbing though, but haven't had time to perfect yet. Will upload when I get it right.

Ok I'm pretty happy with this now =)

I give you the Super-Heavy-Lift Shuttle. Full Large RCS tank + Full Orange Tank to 130km orbit. Fully Stock. MechJeb compatible. No fuel-transfers necessary. Landable if the tanks in the cargo bay are empty.

Tips for launch:

You can use MechJeb, but you may need to help it slightly. Pull up as you launch as controls are saturated for about 20s at initial launch, and then they will saturate again as the boosters burn out and as the SSME's run low on fuel. Use OMS engines to assist (Action Group 3), they should be enough to keep you pointed correctly until you start to hit the bottom of the ET. If you DO lose it at end of booster burn (shouldn't, but can happen) press abort to jettison the boosters a little early, you should still have enough delta-v to make orbit. Call it an ATO =)
