I tried 3 times to complete a simple contract. It was only on the 4th try that I figured out what was wrong.

I thought it was going to be a satellite in the right orbit but going the wrong way, lots of people have done that. This though is a new one!

As Renegrade says, a Mun-Minmus transfer won't require much delta-V, though you will need to get the right timing.

Yesterday I started a new career, put Jeb in the pod strapped to a small SRB and a chute with the simple and easy missions of "launch a new vessel" and "reach 5000m". I pressed space. My chute and rocket started at the same time.

if it makes you feel any better: that mistake has actually happened in real life as well. There's a video about it on the forums somewhere.

And yeah, the chute-booster-stage is about the most annoying thing in the VAB... There's just no state I can imagine where they should ever be on the same stage as any kind of propulsion, with the possible exception of separatrons if you're using a stage recovery mod. Second most annoying is launch clamps going into a new stage before your rocket fires. Release drop panic spacebar-spacebar-spacebar-spacebar-explode.
