Mobile Base Wheels

Recommended Posts

So I'm making Munar Mobile base, and I can't decide on the wheels. So Far I've got 2 wheel sets, ruggedized and RoverMax 3

Has anyone tested either wheels (similar situation) on the Mun and put in a recommendation?

Ruggedized.

Pro:

Fast (30 m/s)

Con:

Not very stable

RoverMax 3

Pro:

Stable

Con:

SLOW (10 m/s)

You don't want to be doing high speeds on the Mun anyway. It's so bumpy and cratered, and with such low gravity that design #1 would simply flip.

#2 will want to sag in the middle, though. The lab is heavy.

How do you propose to land it there?

Neither has sagged on the platform.

A rocket in the middle and then 2 rockets on the ends for the final 100 m. I've Landed similar bases, but not mobile.

Depends on what you mean by "mobile base". How frequently will you really be moving it? I guess what I'm asking is are you treating it like a manufactured home/mobile home or a motorhome/RV?

You might want to treat it more like a manufactured home where you pick a central location, plant it in place and take a rover out in the nearby area gathering science and returning. You can then move the base to a new central location and do it again. If you do it right, you could even build a rover "garage" on the mobile base so when you move the base, you don't have to drive the rover with it. A base that moves only occasionally doesn't need a lot of maneuverability and speed but needs to be stable, the rover will be your speedy craft.

As for sagging, I'm not sure what kind of gravity Skorpychan's Mun has, but on the Mun in KSP it shouldn't be an issue.

There's a docking port on the bottom of both, how I attach the bottom rocket, however I've been unable to get a rover that hasn't caused FUN when I moved. I was thinking of mainly a base, but rv when my wanderlust sets in.

If it's too saggy in the middle you can do either 1 of these options.

1: install Ferram's Kerbal Joint reinforcement mod

2: and another big wheel in the middle

Or to keep it stock; reduce the wheel base, move the wheels closer together. This won't add extra mass and as an added bonus it reduces the turning radius.
