KSP multiplayer

I've tried looking but can't seem to figure out how KSP multiplayer works. Obviously, I'm talking about the unofficial attempts at this but squad is considering mp after 1.0 (which, since last night, is not that far)

So, I'm not trying to figure out how to play KSP multiplyer, I'm just wondering what do multiple players do when playing KSP together.

I have read a couple of threads on this but found it going around in circles without telling me exactly what's involved.

You can warp any time you want, and then people can warp to "catch up" to you. When you're in the same time, you can interact (dock/crash).

... that's pretty much it.
