Community Craft Submissions for KSP 1.0 Stock Crafts?

Recommended Posts

Sal recommended I post this here.

I was wondering if Squad would be interested in community craft submissions to be included as and/or replace existing Stock craft files for KSP 1.0. Perhaps offer a community contest or solicit submissions for developer review?

I know over the years the community has commented on current stock craft, and many have offered suggestions for improvement, some even outright redesigning them from scratch to work as intended.

If so, I would like to offer to Squad this space shuttle I developed for stock inclusion in a future official KSP game release:

STS-1 Space Shuttle

With all the talk about how difficult mk3 craft are to fly, and how near impossible NASA replica space shuttles are to develop, I'd though I'd set out to build one for the books proving it can be done. :)

Squad is free to include it as a stock craft. No strings attached. No credit necessary. :) I just want to see KSP 1.0 launch with some excellent craft to inspire new and advanced players alike to learn from its design.

You can download the craft file here: STS-1 Spacecraft Exchange thread.

If anyone else likes the idea of Squad accepting community submissions for stock craft inclusion in KSP 1.0, feel free to respond to this thread with your ideas of what you'd like to see in the 1.0 released stock craft lineup.

The overall problem here is 1.0 is going to break your craft, at least slightly. So they would be including a bunch of crafts designed for 0.90 aerodynamics and they might no longer fly quite as well as they did before without tweaking. Plus Squad intentionally tried to make the stock craft insufficient. They want you to fix them.

Ah.. then how 'bout Squad selecting a few engineers for early access to make their winning craft 1.0?

I think that new stock crafts should be very basic e.g. enough to get to a decent orbit but I think they should be designed so that a new player can improve them. I think that if you have a prebuilt space shuttle it might take some of the fun away from the player (they may think that if one is already built there is no point in them making one). An example of what I mean is that they could make a simple orbit rocket that the player could improve by adding boosters or docking capability. I think that the ships should teach the players somthing but not teach them everything so they can feel a sense of achievement in making the ship better.

Any decently designed rocket (I won't speak to spaceplanes) should do fine in 1.0---and by decently designed, I mean looks and is balanced like a real rocket.

I suppose Squad could always pick a few, throw them around 1.0 themselves, and tweak if they really like them.
