Mods are a total no-go on the Mac version, because it crashes at or just over 2GB for me. I'll be amazed if stock KSP even starts on Macs when 1.0 hits, given each version since 0.23(?) has increased the RAM significantly. Luckily I have a PC as well, but I'd prefer the Mac version worked properly as I have to stream it from my PC which breaks the mouse camera controls.

Bizarrely, while forcing OpenGL on the PC version reduces stock memory usage from >1.5GB to <1GB, the Mac version (which is OpenGL by default) doesn't get any benefit from it and can easily reach 2GB.

I'd be curious how much memory usage you find for KSP if you check the using the command line ps tool, since Activity Monitor seems to underreport addressable space usage.

@Fourjays:

I can run KSP with 40+ mods just fine, though I do use Active Texture Management. That said, many of those mods are plugins, which typically use very little memory.

Also, the -force-opengl option can't possibly do anything on Macs, because Macs only have OpenGL.

The issue is that my KSP_OSX folder is only 2.5 GB in size, whereas it should be able to be in excess of 3GB before it crashes. KSP for Mac is terrible right now as far as stability goes, and I dearly hope that Squad fixes this for Release 1.0.

40? :confused: I had about 10-15 with 0.24, and with 0.25 I couldn't even get my "essentials" to not send it over the memory limit. Not bothered trying 0.90 on the Mac, but I'll definitely give it another test now. I'll also check out ps tool and see what that reports.

I'm aware -force-opengl wouldn't do anything on the Mac. :P My point was that OpenGL on Windows results in lower memory usage, whereas the Mac version (which is OpenGL anyway) seems to use more memory than DirectX on Windows.

Sadly Mac users get overlooked so much in the world of KSP.. .... gaming period. Having a Mac is not the most ideal in gaming for a couple reasons I've learned. I just wish I knew more, it's kind of a mystery why this is. I have some idea but not the while picture. I love playing KSP but if I get nailed by mods and my options are limited... I might have to scale down mods (which is hard as many of my favs can be inter-dependant) or put KSP down altogether. Not fun.

My conclusion is that KSP 0.90 is incompatible with OS X Yosemite. Everything worked fine when I was still using Mavericks, but after I upgraded to Yosemite, KSP started crashing several times an hour. As far as I can see, there are two options: downgrade to Mavericks or wait for KSP 1.0. I chose the latter option.
