Things Missing in Game Copy

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I usually keep two installs of the game: one untouched, and another I use to actually play the game, usually with mods.

A few days ago I started having some problems, mainly with textures, for reasons unknown (like B9 textures not showing - parts were plain white, flags not showing on the New Game Menu, tech tree not showing the nodes, buttons from toolbar not showing their icons, etc).

I tried to solve the problem by removing all mods and reinstalling them again, one by one, to find out wich one, if any, was causing the problem. I couldn't find the cause, so I decided to completely remove the game from my pc, and download it and install again (btw, it's a steam release).

As usual, the first thing I did was to make a copy of the fresh install, and leave the original untouched. This time, before putting any mods, I tried both the original and the copy.

On the original, I had no problems. I didn't test it very far but I noticed I could choose my flag when starting a new game. This is one of the main indicators I have to know if something is wrong (regarding this problem).

On the copy, I couldn't choose any flag, so I guess something is wrong.

Any idea why this is happening?

As I mentioned, I didn't test it intensively, and the tests were made without any mods, but I'll test it more and with mods.

KSP version is 0.9

My system is: Win 7 Home Premium SP1 64bit (I play in 32bit), Intel i7 @ 1.6GHz, 6Gb RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT230M. It's not a gaming pc, but I've managed to play this game without any major problem.

Thanks for the support.

The copy seems to be having trouble accessing its files... and I'd say it's because you've copied it into a subdirectory of Program Files. The original copy is okay because Steam takes care of setting up permissions and appropriate registry keys for that one. The moment you make a copy, those protections are gone and Windows treats it as an unauthorised program, preventing it from accessing files.

Copy it instead to somewhere like C:\KSP or C:\Games\KSP, and you shouldn't have this issue. :)

I make the copy to the same folder where Steam games are installed (I think it's D:\games\steam library\steam apps\common\[game]) and never had this problem, but I'll go for your suggestion and let you know if it worked ;)

Thanks :)

Squad has been moving parts (renaming part files and moving the folders where the parts are found) around in the folders since 0.25. If your mod depends on a texture from a part that has been moved, then that texture will show up funcky.

Many of the mods of fuel tanks rely on stock textures and repaints. They will not work properly unless they are installed precisely and the stock parts location is conserved. I have had to trash many mods from 0.18 and 0.22 for this reason, and my 'reload' log is full of red-lines, theres alot of stuff I still need to throw out. For the most part, however, these mods are now obsolete, I keep them only because of the cfg coding examples.
