Time Zone Problem I Can't Wrap My Head Around

noun

4 : something set up and established by authority as a rule for the measure of quantity, weight, extent, value, or quality

The thing to keep in mind is this is not a quirk of nature, this is a bookkeeping problem. That it is one day on the east side of the dateline and the next day to the west is a consequence of having agreed to measure time based on a reference location (Greenwich). While time is a fundemental aspect of nature, timekeeping is a social constuct.

Better odds than you're thinking. Depends on who you hang out with. Julian dates are in common use in computer system administration, banking, insurance, navigation... Pretty much any field that frequently deals with "how many days between these two dates?" use it. Most may never find a reason to bring it up socially, though. :)

I would say there's a substantial difference between using a time system and thinking in it. In KSP I do a lot of stuff using metric time, i.e. the number of seconds from epoch, but I don't think in those terms, a megasecond is not an intuitive unit for me. I convert to days, hours, minutes to get a grasp of magnitude.

Similarly, while many fields use Julian time for convenience in calculation, very few people actually think in those terms. Most convert to conventional dates, if their tools don't do so automatically for them.

I take this as a challenge.
