Can't enter buildings / game freezing just started today

Last night and every other night this week I've been playing, no issues.

Starting today, I can't enter any buildings right away. I mouse over and they highlight, but clicking does nothing.

After a while I might get into one or two buildings, but they load extremely slow, and eventually the entire game freezes but I can still hear the music playing. Have to quit through the task manager.

I tried doing the following:

- restarting the game

- restarting my pc

- verifying the integrity of the files through Steam

No go on anything. Nothing else has changed with my pc. I didn't install anything new, or uninstall anything, or change any settings. Quite literally played last night, went to bed, logged on today and bam I've got issues.
