Computer problems.

Well I tried overclocking my CPU, I used a guide one of my friends gave me.

I just went under my BIOS menu and changed the overclocking setting to 1 MHz faster.

A few minutes after booting Vista I keep hearing a 'BZZZ' coming from inside my PC.

I did not open up my PC at all, there is no way a bug got in there.

What do I do now?

That\'s the sound of your CPU frying. You\'re getting into something you sound like you don\'t have the experience to be messing around with. It\'s very easy to damage your CPU when playing with over clocking unless you fully understand what you\'re doing.

For one thing, you never make large changes like adding a whole GHz in speed. You do it in small increments, testing after each one to see if the CPU can handle it. Once you reach the point where funny things happen, such as a buzzing noise, you back it off and leave it.

Cheers!

Sometimes I get a little buz sound which is from the fan over the CPU. Make sure you download heat monitoring programs to make sure that your parts are not over heating. Remember to check the manufactures recommended heat range.

When I overlocked my PC I activated a function in the BIOS which will turn it off when ever the temp got too high. Though it was faulty and would turn itself of all the time it was a good safety measure while I found out how much OCing I could do. I got mine from 2.7Ghz to 3.0Ghz. A 1Mhz shouldn\'t cause any harm as CPU manufactures have a rather large safety measure.

Are you sure it was 1Mhz as 1 megahertz = 0.001 gigahertz.

Open it up and look for something physical. It could be a very easy fix.

My friend\'s laptop randomly started making a horrendous buzzing noise very randomly after about 1 year of use.

Turned out a sticker of some sort came loose (heat perhaps) and was actually sucked inside the CPU fan. Knocking it around occasionally bumped it out of the way, but it would eventually get sucked back in and start rattling.

Used tweezers to pull it out and everything was normal.

So the point being, it could be a very easy fix, but sounds like something is horribly, horribly wrong. I wouldn\'t rule out anything physical until you actually take a look inside, spin the fans manually (and carefully).

does the sound persist even after you restore the settings to defaults?

If it persists even after default settings are restored, then something has probably happened to the system, probably hardware related at this point.

While your system is running, pop open the side panel, and see if you can\'t figure out which part is making the noise. That can help narrow it down. and like Ydoow said, might simply be a bit of lint that shifted and ruined the balance of a fan causing it to wobble and make the noise.

If its not simple, or apparent, and still happens on default settings I have a few little utilities to have you run that will provide numbers useful in getting more specific in the troubleshooting.

Hm. What kind of buzzing does it sound like? Can you find a youtube video with a good sample?

Does it sound like the fan is wiggling or something is caught in it?

I know you checked, but being able to tell what type of 'buzz' your hearing can help narrow it down.

I\'m really betting it\'s something to do with the fan though.

If you do have compressed air, you might as well give it a good blow. Can only help clear your computer of lint and dust :P
