As part of preparations for interplanetary crewed spaceflight, the decision was made to send a re-useable space station on a test flight into solar orbit. A team of scientists prepared to perform vital medical research on the effects of deep space travel on the crew. Flight engineers accompanied them to ensure that the station's vital systems were kept in working order.
