What game resources are included in Duna's atmoshpere?

Recommended Posts

Since the only stock atmospheric 'resource' is oxygen, and it's only usable in air-breathing jet engines, I'd have to say "none". This may (probably will?) change with the introduction of some kind of ISRU in 1.0.

I believe that the Karbonite mod introduces an air-mining style of resource gathering, but I've not used it so I can't comment on the details.

In the current stock game, none.

In the next release, we know there's just going to be a single resource. I don't think there'll be any atmospheric collection of that, it will just be on the surface.

As far as mods go, well various mods are able to use the atmosphere as air or some synonym thereof. I think most if not all of these don't use the stock air intakes, but rather custom ones. For example the Kethane mod has the Kethane jet, while some other mods might have nuclear thermal jets, and Firespitter uses it as "coolant" for electric propellers. (Which is a kludge really, needed so the props don't work in space.)

interesting thoughts, heres an experiment I just did

I was able to use Biomass CO2/Oxygen/Hydrogen compressprs to grab hydrogen out of Dunas atmosphere. The oxygen and CO2 compressors were not able to get any oxygen or CO2. Hmmm so at least half my question is answered. Maybe other bodies have different components in the air?

RoverDude changed Regolith not that long ago so Duna is showing Karbonite in the atmosphere now and there is quite a lot on the surface. I'm not seeing anywhere equatorial with zero (unlike the Mun and Minmus). I've yet to make a karbonite powered jet to fly on Duna so I don't know if it is a usable concentration. However there is "intakeATM" so you can use the electric turbo fans from his mods. Flying around Duna with those is super fun, especially if the craft you make is tiny.

Who knows what RoverDude has planned for stock. It seems to me like it's going to be integration of his Karbonite mod with some changes. We can collect Karbonite out of the atmosphere and in very low orbit, so we MAY be able to with the stock resource.

i wonder if I have karbonite in my game :/ isnt that just a sort of fuel?

Karbonite (mod) release thread: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/89401 - if you don't have it, you can get it easy enough :)

Summary; it's a generic resource that you can either use directly as a high powered/low efficiency fuel, or refine into fuel in-situ. Karbonite can be mined, or scooped from atmospheres, or filtered from oceans (Laythe, Eve, Kerbin).

Typical scenario would be to drop a miner on Mun/Minmus, have a refinery in orbit, and allow your interplanetary missions to refuel there, giving them an easy escape from Kerbin's SOI with full tanks. Other options are send a refinery ahead of a manned mission, allowing them to refuel and do more while they're there (particularly good for the Jool system with all its moons and biomes).

sounds like a party!

Combine Karbonite with MKS and TAC-LS for best results - gives you more in-situ resources and reasons to put bases in places. Although Karbonite on its own is a perfectly viable option for making fuel offworld. Also adds contracts to go and collect some and bring back to Kerbin :)
