  1. The insulation of nuclear fuel it's not perfect so the exhaust has parts of it.
  2. ¿Why an 10 ton nerva? ¿Do it need a good TWR? IIRC the motor itself it's shielded, at least the rd-410, and the fuel provides extra shielding. And you can drop tanks as they got empty, you don't need one big tank. I will do the numbers with the rd-410 data later. I'm curious.
  3. The sun also revolves around the barycentre of the solar system people always forget that
  4. In EEUU yes, but in the USSR they continued funding in the 80's, and they even got an operative model the rd-410 (with I was doing as mod and I will retake when I have again 3d tools) with had better TWR and isp than the nerva, but it never flow to the space. This engine could be remade in only a few years if there was political support. Source in Spanish: http://danielmarin.naukas.com/2010/11/23/cohetes-nucleares-a-la-conquista-del-sistema-solar/
  5. Yes, it lower entropy loses, progressive heating it's always a good thing, and in the nozzle you want a gas with velocity not heat so stealing heat in the nozzle should improve the overall efficiency.
  6. That's pretty impressive, more if you look that it's using an old engine that doesn't look very efficient. Can we make a recompilation of extremely efficient personal aircraft like this? I'm very curious, wikipedia and other sources usually don't have consumption figures.
  7. There are parameters for defining clearing the orbit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clearing_the_neighbourhood Please, stop saying that even Jupiter will be an dwarf planet, there is a huge difference in all the parameters between the planets and the dwarfs planets. Funny fact, Pluto is less planet than Ceres in the three parameters Here they talk about planet nine being a planet based in the Margot's parameter, http://www.findplanetnine.com/2016/01/is-planet-nine-planet.html even in their worst predicted case it will be in the planet zone.
  8. I think an in-game short explanation will be good. At least something like: lowering this could improve your fps, but not the general speed of the game
  9. You can always link only the upper stage of both, but I think the burn times aren't compatible and the block 1 upper stages clearly aren't linked Well if one normal launch launch can launch cubesats as extra cargo, maybe they are for launching extra geostationary satellites
  10. I feel that the biggest problem will come from the insurance companies, they won't charge the same for a reused booster than a new brand one.
  11. It's that difficult to understand that there's a lot of people that don't trust every thing Space X or Elon Musk says?
  12. Wait, do you really use Imperial units in technical aspects in high school? Uhh, I thank (or maybe hoped) that currently you would use only metric system in science education. If you are using a CNC lathe I don't see the point of not programming a bell nozzle, it won't be difficult, and you can use a CAD/CAM software if you don't know programming. And an old lathe operator knows how to deal with strange trajectories in manual lathes. In Spain too, a solid rocket will be categorize as an explosive (because it is...). There it's a little company developing a little rocket and they only use liquid motors because the regulations.
  13. There are a lot of topics about that but some examples: at 50 km of altitude it has earth like conditions, maybe there is life (there is a little chemical disequilibrium in the atmosphere unexplained), the understanding of the atmosphere can improve our climate models and well it's the only planet with a gravity similar to earth's maybe it's the only really habitable in the long term.
  14. I like the "overly pessimistic doom and gloom" way more than the "optimistic Space x hype", I don't like none of them really but the first often has goods points and can be debated. The second sometimes look like the next thing they will says is "do you know our lord and savior Elon Musk?" I think that the hype it's more for the lounge. Regarding the topic, I'm bad doing predictions, but I will like to see an increased interest for venus, some floating probes, and the discover of the planet X, it will make astronomy more interesting for the public and maybe the space agencies have more funds and make a new international cooperation like the ISS
  15. Sometimes i think this section should be called Science & Spaceflight & Space X hype I was expecting something realistic somewhat debatable but that's pure fantasy I'm tired off all that hype from space X
  16. Uhhh I like it! Good project! I'm curious, can you give some kind of dimensions, expected trust? The engineer in me wants some data!
  17. I can't see any of your images today, it's my internet or somebody else has the same problem? Everything else seems fine
  18. True but only for shorts periods. IIRC was amphetamine cocktail? I remember the books says something about it but I'm not sure. In any case if they trie to use it to much they start playing with the death, taking higher and higher possibilities of a heart-stroke or another lethal injuries.
  19. They use brachistochrone trajectories, they acelerate at 0,3 g or something like that half the way, and the other haf way they decelerate at 0,3 g so they have 0,3 g all the way except in the middle when they change from prograde to retrograde. (0,3g was taken as an example because it's an acceleration a belter can tolerate). In the asteroids they just spins them to have centrifugal force... But it they weren't reinforced, in reality they will just break away I think
  20. I forgotten about this thread. The thing about people does thinks this scenario can't have stealth it's than they think that with that tech level i'ts doable to make devices with enough resolution and field of view, so you can see everything at once. Field, of course. Resolution? Not even kidding today. But I think the expanse doesn't feature so magical or so futuristics sensors, so you need to actively focusing on something to keep track of it..
  21. Talking about the two possible designs the first one has the advantage that the full rocket can be inside, and I'm thinking: the afterburner nozzle, could be used as a vacuum nozzle extension? with a mechanism closing the intake part of course. Will be the geometry adequate? It's too late here to run numbers...
  22. It will be good idea to have a pinned thread with an index of information and sources about spacecraft, so somebody who wants to know more has an easy way to look for it in the forum
  23. Ei, I don't put the rules, but for coherency with the others planets, I like the idea of a Roman deity.
  24. If it's a planet, the name need to be from Roman mythology
