Delta V needed for planet hopping

Recommended Posts

I am planning on going on a trip around the solar system and I was wondering:

What is highest amount of DV it will take to go from one planet to the next (including moons)?

In other words, how much DV does it take to travel between each planet/moon?

Thanks in advance!

What you are trying to do is called a "grand tour", and the answer depends strongly on the order in which you visit the various planets and how much time you're willing to invest.

So no, you will not find an answer on these forums. What you will find, however, are tools that help you determine the answer for your specific case :P

Go here. Enter the current date of your savegame under "earliest departure". Choose your first destination. Make sure you set initial and final orbits (or the fly-by toggle) to match what you're planning to do, but there's no need to be overly precise. Select transfer type "optimal". Let it compute a result. Either accept the result, or choose a different profile from the porkchop plot. In either case, when you're happy, write down departure and arrival dates, as well as the total dV.

Next, choose the planet you just went to as the origin, and select the next destination. Set your arrival time from the previous step as the "earliest departure". Get yourself the next result.

Repeat until you have all legs of your journey mapped out. Now, add up all of the dV numbers you calculated. When you build your spaceship, take no less than that plus 10%. Or if you want to be extra safe, and not follow the plan to the letter, make it plus 25%. That, then, is your final answer.

Good luck!
