  1. I cast my wand of necromancy on this challenge with:
  2. It should be noted that a standard Hohmann transfer from Kerbin to Jool will sometimes take more than three years, sometimes less, depending on which transfer window you use. Make sure to check flight time if you are aiming for under 3 years =)
  3. I thought this was impossible, but have proven myself wrong:
  4. The only thing they impact are the Mammoth engines, which are very robust. And yes, I do realize this isn't an exact match, but figured folks working on their own missions might find it interesting =)
  5. Somewhat relevant: some time ago, as a part of a collaboration series, I delivered 240 tons (24,000 units) of ore from Eve to a station in Munar orbit.
  6. It used the rather old trick of the reverse nose cone. The asteroid grabber is mounted inside the utility bay. Fairing aerodynamics more or less obsolete the need for the nosecone trick nowadays.
  7. The longest mission (in terms of in-game time and my own time investment) I have ever worked on is completed! The video of the mission is about an hour long, spread out over 5 separate episodes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylB8Nu1iNxs&index=1&list=PL16Xvb9D9n828Jme4BMj2srqP1gpSiufx
  8. Sending Bill around space on a chair has become somewhat of a calling card for me =) Even when I have massive crafts with thousands of passengers I ensure that my fearless pilot is in a command chair. There are other ways that I prefer to add difficulty. By the way, reading my post above, I apologize for the potential appearance of unintended snark. No disrespect intended, I appreciate your effort in stimulating the community.
  9. I am planning on another Jool 5 at some point, although not necessarily soon. Please send me your unrefueled grand tour vid/album/post, would love to check it out.
  10. This is Bradley =) The craft in that video works in both 1.1.3 and 1.2, but it works a shade better in 1.2 IIRC, I took some fuel out in the 1.2 variant.
  11. I have a design i'm working on at the moment that gets a lot more payload to Eve orbit in one stage than anything I had achieved in 1.1.3. It is somewhat easier than before. Vertical takeoff style is certainly harder than before. I think this means I need a video on this =)
  12. It got easier in 1.2! I originally built the craft before 1.2, but the changes in that patch improved performance.
  13. Months behind on this response, but this video WAS in the new atmosphere. And yes, leaving an asteroid in orbit is roughly the same concept of leaving a fuel tank there, but I would like to think it was a fun loophole. As to making it to Gilly from Eve on one stage, without refueling, it isn't possible unless a glitch is used. Or some kind of extreme lateral thinking solution. Using the conventional approach, I haven't been able to manage more than a few hundred m/s dV from LEO.
  14. This doesn't really constitute an argument =) Why not make a new category for rogueish chaps that want to do a J5 mission, inspired by this challenge, but don't want to be limited in creativity by arbitrary rules that don't add to the difficulty?
  15. Just to make a note here, I would personally be much more interested in doing this challenge again in this game version if there weren't some unnecessary and arbitrary rules attached. Case in point, not being able to separate before Jool S.O.I. I see no purpose in this; all it does is limit possible designs and creativity. Also personally, If I can't send Bill around space in a command chair, I won't be doing the challenge. Neither of these rules add significant difficulty to the challenge, but they do prevent me from flying the way I like =) Perhaps add another category if you are really invested in this particular ruleset?
  16. I have a fully reusable shuttle that can take @10 kerbals to Eve orbit and back, and can land back on the aircraft carrier that Stratzenblitz and I built and delivered to Eve. It uses a multi-stage design, that lands each part independently on the carrier before redocking itself for reuse. The video of this is coming...eventually. Shameless plug for the aircraft carrier:
  17. Unless some sort of out of the box trick or physics glitch is used, this is not possible. I tried =( Someone already linked my mission that used mining on Tylo (https://youtu.be/_OnGs7L6Wx8), and I think that suitably demonstrates how this is not possible without mining.
  18. My math shown in Matt's video is conclusive proof that the performance shown in Hazard's video is not even close to possible with stock parts and gameplay. If you prefer less math based evidence, many individuals have responded with other evidence that Matt did not include in the video. 1) These are screengrabs from his build video, showing non-stock part statistics https://i.gyazo.com/c60328274503fb372594f993567f43cf.jpg https://i.gyazo.com/39602996f945f3770dfed6bdb6bc380d.png 2) During his landing in another video, he clearly has fuel consumption off during a landing burn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlMbG4fUmRA&feature=youtu.be&t=479
  19. I took my 6 ton electric prop assisted Eve lander with the command chair, and made a version with the lander can. Reached orbit from sea level with a launch mass of 10.220 tons. If I find time this week i'll see how much improvement I can make on it.
  20. Since the ion glider to orbit challenge was closed, I wanted to point out that this isn't completely unimaginable. I managed to reach 19,193 meters from the top of a Kerbin mountain in v1.1.3. I don't see how it is possible to reach orbital speed, but I would hesitate to declare it impossible. Can we figure out how to get ion gliders to orbit? If not, how high is it possible to go?
  21. The return craft from my Eve deep sea mission was in the 5-6 ton range. I used a command seat because that's how I roll, but one could redesign using the same concept and still have a very light design. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Tk73lZTwR6c# Ascent is around 8 minutes, I'm too noob to link from time on my phone.
  22. I am an Eagle Scout and work part time as a membership executive for my local council. I also direct the STEM program during summer camp.
  23. I do not, I also don't know to read apparently. Thank you.
  24. Having an issue getting this to work in 1.2.1 Simply put, the mod shows no signs of being present despite being with all the other mods in the Gaemdata folder. I am probably doing something incredibly dense, would appreciate any assistance.
