  1. I’m going to sound like a sore loser, but I’ll say it anyway. This result is nonsense. I ran this battle 10 times. My plane won 7 out of 10. The Honeybee is a decent plane, but it is not better than the White Collar Criminal. It is not even its equal. WCC outperforms it in just about every way. WCC is faster (much better TWR), has much better pitch rate, and is about as or even more accurate. About the only metric in which the Honeybee is better is roll rate. I uploaded the White Collar Criminal to kerbalx. The Honeybee is also still available. If you think I sound arrogant, or if you don’t believe the previous paragraph is true, or you’re just curious – download both craft files and see for yourself. There is some weirdness in the match itself, too. Is the first battle supposed to have the camera follow the WCC? Then why the switch to the Honeybee? I noticed in my own runs, every time the camera switches to another airplane, it causes the AI to stutter for a moment. It makes a chasing plane more likely to miss, a chased plane more likely to get shot, and a diving plane more likely to not recover in time. It’s probably why a WCC crashed into the ground at 1:04. Second, what happened to a WCC off-camera in the third battle? At 11:11, you can see it shooting down a Honeybee. The WCC is undamaged, it’s flying at high altitude, and it’s turning away from the debris field. It’s a perfectly healthy airplane. And then at 11:52 is just crashes? Why? How? This is not a 2nd tier plane – it doesn’t just crash. Also, by the time the final comes, the two remaining contenders are usually going to be somewhat closely matched – they are, by definition, the two best planes of the competition. The Honeybee is indeed a good plane. The game is not deterministic, there is some randomness in the process. Which is probably why earlier BAD-T iterations had 5-match final battles – to offset some of that randomness – to find the better plane instead of the luckier one. The battle is supposed to be a representation of the competing airplanes' capabilities. And this one just ain't. It is, in my sincerest opinion, garbage. When BAD-T VI rolls around, and people are looking for a sparring partner to test their new designs, the smart ones will use the WCC. And if I bother to participate again, I’ll probably just pull a sturmhauke and resubmit the same plane again. Why spend a few weeks building and testing, putting real-life stuff on hold, when I can just reuse some of my old crap. I might even do better the next time!
  2. PD-2 is equipped with two .50 caliber and one 30mm. It's the 30mm that did most of the damage. BTW, most guns in aviator arsenal shoot explosive ammunition. Or, at least, they are labelled as such. Some rounds carry TNT and are explosive, and others do not have TNT but are still explosive. It looks like pretty much everything including the MG 131 13mm and above shoots explosive rounds.
  3. Bonus matches? WCC doesn't run from the law, it kills the law! Unless it gets shot in the root part -- then it does look a bit like it's folding as it breaks apart... Match 11 between IA-42 Skaris and PD-2 Honeybee. At 6:54, a Honeybee hits a Skaris, and then a few seconds later we can see the Skaris' propeller blades freely moving in the wind. That same Skaris can be seen at 8:37. There was also a discussion about pilot sniping. I saw two unusual hits during the Battle Royale. At exactly 5:00, my WCC hits Aero Imperial. Then at 5:09, the Imperial can be seen in the background, with a triangle marker around it, instead of the usual circle. I don't know what the triangle means -- does it mean a pilot kill? Also in the Battle Royale, at 9:07, PD-2 Honeybee gets hit just once (I believe by WCC, although it is off-screen). Over the next seconds, you can see it tumbling to the ground and crashing. I don't think this is a fuel tank hit, because the Honeybee stores fuel in several parts. I suspect this is a pilot kill (or maybe destruction of the command seat part, which should have the same effect). However, the marker around the Honeybee is circular while it is tumbling in the air, and only turns into a triangle after ground impact. There may be other pilot kills and fuel tank hits -- I suppose I just watched my own plane more carefully then others'. PS: In the last battle, the turn at 2:14 to 2:18 -- OMG! It looks almost like a 180. That was amazing camera work.
  4. I've been waiting for this. Thank you. I think the battle's introductory sentence could have had some jokes about chemicals, criminals, and altitude... Two mid-air collisions are very unlucky, but not totally surprising. The outcomes were not surprising either -- my plane may be agile, but it is also fragile. Also not surprising was how long it took to kill TH-Cs. These things are flying tanks. But they are also fast, which seems to work in my favour -- my plane can stay on their tail. With slower opponents my plane tends to overtake them and sometimes expose its own back. What was very surprising was the ground crash. I never had any issues with that in testing. The altitude range is the default 500-1500. Maybe the AI measures altitude as of sea level, and the battle took place over unusually high terrain? Let's see how I do against a flying wing...
  5. Yes, some thought so two years ago: https://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/165670-ww2-bad-t-iii-bdac-ai-dogfight-tournament/page/17/ Scroll down and you'll see some bi- and triplane pictures, and a video of a fight. I would love to see a WWI-themed tournament, and to build some biplanes. But I can also see the difficulties in setting this up. Judging from that discussion two years ago, there are some issues in balancing the weapons, because Aviator Arsenal weapons are too powerful for the period. I would guess balancing the engines' thrust and weight is similarly challenging, as it took several BAD-T tournaments before the current settings became the norm. The max part count will likely need to be increased, because wings would now need twice or thrice the number of parts, plus struts, plus at least few extra parts to construct an open cockpit. This would mean the host of the tournament might need a more power computer to maintain the same frame-rate and quality of the videos. And of course, someone actually has to be the host and record the battles, and @SuicidalInsanity may or may not have time for that. But if it happens, and I have time, I will definitely build a plane.
  6. Spitfire was an inspiration, as was @SuicidalInsanity's IA-23 Caelus II from BAD-T IV (which looks a lot like a Spitfire itself). My GF also said it looked like a dragonfly. I thought about naming it something dragonfly-related, but I felt like I would then have to give it an appropriate paint job. That would have taken extra time, and I decided to focus on building instead. I thought it looked like one of "those white bicycles they put near the road when someone is hit by a car on a bike, but for planes." I'm having doubts too, now. I think there are several things going on: 1) It seems the Hornet prioritized HP. I don't have the craft file, but just visually, the wing area is not very large. This is a two-engine, 5.25 ton craft, so the extra mass had to go somewhere, and I would guess it went towards increasing the wings' mass-to-strength ratio, and with it hit points. The 20mm is indeed deadly, but it's no 30mm, and it still takes many hits to destroy a large-HP parts. 2) On my computer, on my install of KSP, my plane honestly seems to be a lot more accurate. In fact, From 500m, it's almost laser-accurate. Maybe in this particular battle, because the Hornet seems to have "undifferentiated controls", as you say, maybe it's tumbling through the air in ways that are hard to the AI to predict. Or, maybe it has to do with other mods installed, or the frame rate, or whatever. I really don't know. I tested against Caelus (BAD-T IV champion) and against The Wasp (BAD-T III champion), and it wins more often than not. 3) My plane does not want to spend a lot of time behind its target. It catches up, shoots a few rounds, then overtakes the enemy and flies to the side to start the process again. Perhaps I should have added air brakes, but they come with their own problems -- extra weight, and FAR does not like it when two wings are positioned very close to each other, one on top of the other. My BAD-T IV entry had air brakes, but it used them very, very rarely, so I did not think they were worth it.
  7. Hi, guys. I have a pretty bad stuttering problem. It’s barely tolerable when I run 1v1 test matches, but it makes 2v2 testing practically impossible. I’ve been testing against a craft that has it’s max altitude set very low, and I found a symptom which makes me suspect the issue is tied to the landing gear. I do have the MM patch to fix ALG stutter (in the BADTV_Tweaks.cfg). What I observed is when a plane I am focused on descends below a certain altitude, the game becomes smooth as butter. And when the plane rises again, the game starts stuttering. I think this happens at 350 meters – smooth below, stuttering above. Can anyone help me with this? I’ll gladly provide logs or do whatever tests you’d like to do. Thanks.
  8. Question for @DoctorDavinci: I installed DCK . It seems to conflict with textures supplied by procedural parts, even when the "Current:" texture is set to "Stock". It looks ok in the editor, but comes out all white after launch. Any way to fix this? Thanks.
  9. @DoctorDavinci has a new version of DCK at https://github.com/DoctorDavinci/DCK-Future-Tech, but unfortunately it seems to be all about armour and stealth -- not anything we want for this competition. However, I have not tried it, so I do not know if it can do just colors by themselves. I still have my old KSP 1.3.0 install for BAD-T III. I zipped up the old DCK version we used then. It's at https://gofile.io/?c=1dJsYR.
  10. Hi, everybody. I've been working on a plane as well. Hopefully it'll be done in the next 12 hours or so. Question to @SuicidalInsanity: I'm also trying to come up with a nice paint job, but it's hard. I'm using the B44-S Falcon, and I really do not want yet another orange airplane. Back in BAD-T III, we could use a mod called DCK to change color of the engine (and other) parts. DCK also had armor plates, but those would obviously be illegal. Could I use DCK to change the engine color?
  11. I scanned the previous BAD-T IV, III, and II threads, and compiled a list of everybody who posted in them, excepting those I already noticed posting in the current thread. I assumed that if you posted in the BAD-T threads, you have an interest in such competitions, and therefore might wish to participate in this one. Some people haven’t logged in in months or years, but many are active. My hope is that if your name is mentioned in this thread, you will receive a notification and decide to join in. The more the merrier! So, I would like to invite the following people to join in this fight: @53miner53, @Adam Kerman, @adamgerd, @Aerolfos, @Alioth81, @alp3r, @Arvolder, @Astrofox, @Azimech, @BahamutoD, @Bananders, @blackheart612, @Bob_Saget54, @Bottle Rocketeer 500, @Brice04, @Combatsmithen, @crashsolo36, @DIMASARM, @DoctorDavinci, @Doke, @Draconiator, @dundun92, @dundun93, @Dwerto, @Eidahlil, @ferram4, @g00bd0g, @Gnoyze, @gridghost, @Ironsights, @JagerVonSmith, @Jeb, The Lonely Kerbonaut, @Joseph Kerman, @KamikazeF0X, @keptin, @Kronos1174, @KSP Bros KS, @luftein, @MarvinCZ, @Matuchkin, @MightyDarkStar, @Murican_Jeb, @NKL, @Noir, @OmegaForce, @OrbitalBuzzsaw, @Orenstix, @pyrosheep, @RedPandaz, @SasquatchM, @Sidestrafe2462, @SpannerMonkey(smce), @sturmhauke, @TangerineSedge, @Temeter, @tetryds, @The Fedora Astronaut, @The Optimist, @theonegalen, @TheSealBrigade, @TheSpaceManiac, @Van Disaster, @Vanamonde, @Vexnium, @Vigelius, @Wjolcz, @Wolf123. If I’ve not mentioned you, I apologize. Going through three threads was a tedious task, as was typing everybody’s name here. If you see this, please join in. I want to hear your lamentations over losing, instead of lamentations over missing the competition. Let’s swamp @SuicidalInsanity with so may submissions that he will be running battles for the next few months! Come and fight with us!
  12. Sweet! Thank you! I have a suggestion. What about inviting every person from previous tournaments to participate in this one, by writing their name (like @this). Some people might miss the tournament thread, but if mentioned by name, they will receive a notification. Everybody from BAD-T 4 and 3 (and even 2 and 1, although I can't find those threads anymore), the somewhat recent Juno Ace Ultimate Free For All, and any other competition you might think of. In fact, if you'd like, I can do it -- I will find the time for that. Basically, I've noticed that BAD-T's participation has been declining throughout the years. So I'd like to do something to advertise it (and DJA) to bring in more people. Maybe I could even make a thread of reddit's /r/KerbalSpaceProgram to interest some new folks. Let me know what you think.
  13. LOL, no. The heaviest part, the engine, is in the front for BAD-T-style propeller-driven planes, and in the rear for jets. It's a whole different ball game. I get my fun from building. But if I'm going to participate, I intend to put in the effort to try to win.
  14. I really want to participate, but I don't have time to build now. The earliest I can start building will be the first week of June. My BAD-T IV craft took me about a month of building and testing (and was time well-spend, I think -- I took second place ). Any chance you can postpone the submission date by a couple of weeks?
  15. @Alioth81, could you share a link to your Reefshark? Also, if there's a fixed version of @SuicidalInsanity's Fishtank, I'd like to have it, too. Thanks.
  16. I proposed something? I don't remember, but you made something cool, so that's great. That Speed Adjusted Steer Limiter looks useful - maybe it'll make my plane not tear itself apart at 300m/s. If I may propose something, please document your changes. In fact, you seem to know a lot about BDA, maybe document the old tweaks as well . I still don't really understand what pitch Ki does, for example.
  17. Same. I can't get the Fishtank to get off the ground. Check FAR stability derivatives. Make sure everything is green.
  18. @SuicidalInsanity, BTW, when you have a Kerbal in focus, you can press 'p', and it'll deploy the parachute. No need to right click (and show the cursor). More movie-like
  19. Could you expand on that a little? The part about it having the highest accuracy, and the part about shooting 20m to the left. I ask because from my observations, 23mm is not accurate. 20mm shoots in a line. 23mm sprays in different directions.
  20. 30mm is deadly, but it has low muzzle velocity and somewhat low rate of fire. It's a close range weapon. 23mm looks good on paper, but I don't think it works out in practice. It seems to be less accurate than other guns (as in, bullets like to fly in different directions). It seems to overheat quickly. And, while you'd think it would do a lot of damage, it's rather average. I think for Tallyhawk, three 20mm's (Hispano) would be the best option. Hispanos are accurate, have better rate of fire and muzzle velocity than most guns, and do very decent damage. Instead of taking 5-6 passes to kill my Lurker with the 15mm's, you would do it in 2-3 passes with the 20mm's.
  21. Very good battle. I did better than I expected. Tallyhawks accelerate faster than me (because two engines) and they turn (pitch) quite a bit faster, too. Their guns are not very powerful, and they're not very accurate (and I'm not either), but speed and turning are already enough to make them deadly. I ran some test fights to see how this fight would turn out. 1v1 because my laptop isn't fast enough for 2v2. Usually, Tallyhawk would out-turn me and land a few shots. Once did not do any damage, because these are only 15mm guns. But 4-5 times would kill my plane. I guess my plane's propensity to collide worked in my favor. BTW, this is the first tie of the tournament. Although I suppose technically @dundun92 won 2/3 fights.
  22. Did anyone notice, none of the Delta's were actually shot down? More like chased into the ground.
