WW2 BAD-T III - BDAc AI Dogfight Tournament
aleksey444 replied to SuicidalInsanity's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Keptir's Rolf-75 was my main sparring partner when I was designing my plane. He released early, and I took advantage It's a turn-fighter. In fact, it sacrifices some stability to turn faster. So it turns, stalls a bit, corrects, turns some more. But it works. On the other hand, it's heavier than it needs to be. So, my plane can keep up with Rolf's turning, but it can also outrun it, because it's a lot lighter. There are no guarantees, but I think probability is on my side in that fight. SI seems to have taken a similar design philosophy as I did -- small plane, so it presents as small a target as possible. Also, he's using b9 wings for parts of the fuselage, which is nice, because you can control the mass by adjusting the strength. But with a stock cockpit, which weighs a ton, I doubt it's as light. Your plane is also very similar, maybe a little bigger than SI's -- it's hard to judge from the group screenshot. But you also have a move powerful engine. I think these fights will come down to accuracy and turning ability. The one I'm really curious to see in action is the other open cockpit plane. I think it's Bob_Saget's Falcon. It's 2nd row on the right in the group screenshot. It's also pretty small, and an open cockpit saves A LOT of mass. And the one I'm really afraid of is the Wasp. Like I said, that thing is a sniper . It's jut as light as my plane (in fact, 100-200 kgs lighter), so I can't run away. It can out-turn me with those huge wings. And it's crazy accurate, so my small size doesn't save me. I ran a few 1v1's with it, and it doesn't look good -

Well, I'm pretty happy with how this played out -

Yeah, that thing is a sniper. It's made out of paper, so it can't survive a single hit, but it doesn't need to. It can turn on a dime, and is ridiculously accurate. -

It was happening even after I applied the patch. -

I had that happen, a lot, when testing my plane. If I switched view to another plane, the one running away would turn around and attack. I think it's a BDA glitch, instead of some kind of problem with plane design. So, the solution for the judge seems to be to just switch views and trigger the turn around. Probably best done when the feeling plane is some distance away, say 2km or thereabout, so that it's not disadvantaged. -

You're just saying that because our planes are fighting each other in the first round! -

Dang it. I guess I misread your reply about the weight of air in the intakes and the kerbal. I actually thought I was a little *over* the limit, but I didn't want to mess with it, because it seemed to make things worse. BTW, the kerbal weighs 94 kgs. With an open cockpit, the plane mass increases by that amount when lauched, but with a closed (stock) cockpit, the mass does not increase. So, maybe make an exception, in the interest of fairness between open and closed cockpits. However, if you're changing the mass of my plane, could you please change it by increasing the Mass-Strength percentage of the fuel tank? It's the small b9wing part right behind the seat. This shouldn't change the CoM. Thanks! -

Does the air in the air intake count towards dry weight? I'd like to clarify. Suppose I launch a craft, and on the runway, without the fuel and with empty ammo boxes, it weighs exactly 2,500 kgs. Does that mean that in the hangar, also without the fuel and ammo, it can weigh: (1) 2,500 - 94 (kerbal + eva fuel) = 2,406 kgs. or (2) 2,500 - 94 (kerbal + eva fuel) - 50 (air in the intake) = 2,356 kgs. or (3) something else. -

A few questions about craft weight. (1) I built my own cockpit. In SPH, the weight of the craft is reported as one amount. When I launch it, the weight increases by 144 kg. These are 50 kgs of air (which disappear if I launch with closed intake) and 94 kgs of the kerbal and his EVA fuel. The increase by 94 kgs does NOT happen with a closed cockpit, even though there is a kerbal inside. Can I exclude the weight of the kerbal from the craft dry weight? In other words, if my craft dry weight must be at least 2,500 kgs, can I make it 2,406 (2,500 - 94) ? (2) Ammunition does not count towards the dry weight of the craft. But does the weight of the ammo boxes (18 kgs each) count? In other words, if the weight of my craft with *empty* ammo boxes is 2,500 kgs, is that ok? (3) How much fuel, exactly? Fuel consumption varies with speed. According to Kerbal Engineer, my craft has 10 minutes of fuel at Mach 0, and 25 minutes of fuel at Mach 0.3. Is this ok? (4) Which timezone are we going by for the submission deadline? Thanks -

I'll try to enter. I'm building a plane now, but it's not going very well. If you push the deadline, I'll have more time to work on it. But don't do it just for me. I also have a few questions. 1) Where exactly do I place the AABulletDefs.cfg file? 2) Battles seem to stop on their own. Or, one plane fights, and the other one just tries to circle the KSC, or to gain altitude. I installed all the required mods by hand. Only a few (like Kerbal Engineer, MechJeb, Editor Extensions) I installed thru ckan. Does anyone else have this kind of problem? How do I fix it? Or, at least, how do I diagnose it? Thanks. -

@goduranus It looks like an airplane. Maybe not in that screenshot, but definitely in general. There are no real world analogues for ADFX-01 Morgan (it's a sci-fi plane), nor for the Dorito. It took me a few days to engineer it. Please run it. -

Hi, guys. I installed BDArmory manually, instead of from CKAN, and that fixed my problems. I think the issue was that (1) I had a slightly older BDA version, and (2) CKAN did not include something called Physics Extender. So, thanks for your suggestions. I now have a somewhat different problem. I made a plane, and tested it against ZType. After the two planes pass each other a few times, my plane tends to fly straight up, into the stratosphere. It goes so high that the engines shut down. When it eventually falls down, the two planes (mine and ZType) are usually so far away from each other that they don't try to engage. Anyone ever have a problem like that?

Hi. I wanna participate. I'm building a plane, and will try to submit it tomorrow. I have several questions: (1) Are we limited to Panthers only? There are some very powerful engines in the allowed mods, but all the submitted planes use panthers. (2) I'm having problems initiating fights when the planes are in the water. Vessel Switcher only sees one plane at a time. I don't have this problem with launching planes from land. Am I missing some extra mod? I installed all the allowed mods through CKAN, latest versions and all dependencies. (3) Is there some way to launch fights from Laythe? I know I could use HyperEdit and Vessel Mover, but it's kind of a pain in the ass to set it up. Any way to do it automatically? (4) I cannot open Kaiju P2 plane. KSP tells me the part called bahaMk22LightningCockpit is missing. I have BDynamics Mk22 Cockpits mod version 1.1 installed. Any idea what the problem could be? Thanks!

Is this still open? -
How many planes are there now?
-
Nah, it's ok. I think it would cheapen the experience. Let's wait for more planes, so we can have a proper tournament. BTW, how are these things advertised? I think I found out about this from the ASC thread. Are tournaments announced somewhere? Maybe there just aren't enough people who know about this awesomeness?
-
Oh no! I was so excited to be watching some battles today. This is my first tournament, too. Come on, guys. Shape up, and make airplanes. I need to get my tournament cherry popped asap. On the other hand, maybe I'll make another fighter in time for the new deadline.
-
Can you post a link to your plane? I've been trying to build something to kill that freaking 'raptor for weeks now, without luck.
-
Thank you very much for your craft! It looks great, and handles good too. I flew it a bit, and then pitched it against the dummy craft. It's going to be my new sparring partner The enemy craft in the 4th video looks phenomenal, btw. I did download the dummy craft a while ago (but thank you DoctorDavinci for the suggestion), but it's pretty easy to kill. BTW, for some reason, I cannot get the airplanes to fight in a competition. They lift off and then just circle the runway. I have to turn off the competition and manually turn on guard mode to get them to fight. Does anyone know why this happens, and how to fix it?
