For Phase 2, would it be possible to get a custom part that could mount the shuttle to a Mk3 fuselage like the SCA? If possible, it could attach like a docking port, so you could use KAS winches to lift the shuttle onto the plane, wherever it lands and fly it back to KSC from Island Runway or any KerbTown runways. It could also be used for people to practice their landings. I've been thinking about requesting this for awhile, i just now got around to typing it out. And if you do end up doing that, please include this:

If you want a small cargo bay, just use the flexibility of radial decouplers and structural panels, and use small rockets so open/close them, and use jr docking ports to keep them closed. Or if you want a huge one you can just make actual hinges.

Space shuttles look awesome and you feel like a boss when flying one,especially when it is stock ans has functional doors. They are a real design challenge. I just use SatelliteAR. Its an android app made by AGI, they make space simulation software for all kinds of different aerospace companies. It also lets you see other satellites aswell, one night I went out at like 3am just to see Cygnus and ISS at the same time.
