  1. Yay, a new chapter! And some nice designs (and pictures of them) in this one.
  2. I suggest that you have a look at (and post to) this excellent thread.
  3. Bon voyage, @sal_vager, and thanks for everything - including leaving us with one last verse.
  4. "Imagine you were dying and a long way from home and in terrible pain. And just when you think it couldn't get any worse, you look up and see the face of the devil himself. Hello, Dalek."
  5. "Just get us on the ground." "That part'll happen pretty definitely."
  6. I'll see your .12 and raise you .10 (I think... hard to be sure, this far back), with some of my very first shots - before there was a Mun. (that's an old modded Mk I capsule, made to look like our current single-kerb Mercury knockoffs)
  7. You all need to STOP. Right now. This is Just Jim's story, not yours. Some of you have already been told this. You should not have to be told again.
  8. "when suddenly, the animator suffered a fatal heart attack--" "urk!" *thud* "--and the cartoon peril was no more."
  9. ... again, I regret that I have but one 'like' to give to one of your posts. But no regrets for giving you the perfect intro line.
  10. Whenever I see a surface-navy vessel in the weight class of a battleship - or a carrier - taking to the skies, there's one musical theme I always think of.
  11. Anyone else old enough to remember what happened when the similarly, ah, intrepid crew of the Znutar picked up "a strange rock" on an alien world? (For those who aren't,here's a primer.)
  12. What they said. Priorities are important, and real life should always come first.
  13. As I've said before (elsewhere, I think?), good ol' H2O is actually pretty amazing/terrifying, as solvents go. We just don't think about that much because we ourselves are mostly made of it and stuff dissolved in it.
  14. Now I have a very clear mental image of the pointy spires lighting up in sequence, smallest to largest, as each note plays - in different colors, per the CE3K board - and the last, as the beam bursts from it, sounds more like a VERY LOUD tuba (again, per the movie) or electric guitar note than a mere synth tone. re mi do do BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
  15. (Not an actual translation ) (And put me down as someone else who saw this back in the day, and recognized those five tones without even being able to read music (much).)
  16. On my first Duna mission, one of my ships arrived with only a few liters left in the transfer stage. I hadn't been watching the outbound burn that closely, so that was a bit of a surprise. Fortunately, this was a ship that was being broken up for parts that would land on the surface; it didn't have to turn around and go home.
  17. Yup, I've used similar expressions for my trips to and from Duna - forex, the aerocapture/braking burns (at both ends) were also the first time in most of a K-year that they'd been under a full g.
