Post your Micro-planes!

Recommended Posts

After having fooled around in the space plane hanger for a little while, I\'ve come up with this:

BdB6n.jpg

Inspired by the Lockheed U-2, it is a thin single-engine jet that requires a gentle touch to control.

After taking off, separate the wing-mounted landing gear to save weight, and enjoy the flight! The plane is very maneuverable and should only require minor trim adjustments to fly perfectly straight!

Disclaimers:

-Like the real U-2, landing may prove to be very difficult, but is most certainly possible!

-I\'ve reached ~8,000 with minimal consequences, but be careful going any higher!

Anyways, post any and all micro-planes you can come up with!

KSA1 Weedwhacker

Takes off on its own. Turn by banking and then adjusting pitch. Using yaw to turn will likely send you out of control. Pitches up and down with some resistance. SAS will keep it flying very straight.

Good few attempts there, I have one that I made using the C7 addons for .14.4 so I\'ll rebuild it in .15 and post it tommorow. Mine in .14 made it about 25km on one tank flying at 2000m, probably make it further a bit higher but when I make a .15 version i\'ll get better data for it.

It has two fuel tanks (so maybe not micro), but I present Lucky (tail)Strike. Its ceiling is 13,000m, and can make about 600m/s. Canards make it maneuverable, and it packs ASAS for easy autopilot.

Flying tips:

  • [li]Turn on ASAS before throttling up, the plane will take off on its own[/li]
[li]I recommend disabling the front fuel tank to force the rear tank to drain first. If the center of gravity gets too far aft the plane gets a bit twitchy.[/li]
[li]Landing speed is about 80 m/s. See if you can land without tailstrike! :)[/li]

3 sweet little flyers here, all nicely balanced to be stable & maneouverable.

A small jet, flies very nicely:

A small prop-powered drone, based on the above:

A small plane, the smallest plane! Actually flies pretty good considering it only has 6 parts, is able to be landed on the VAB roof, or even on the launch tower if you\'re good...

In addition to the stock parts, you\'ll need the following:

Probodobodyne: small crew capsule

Damned Aerospace: May as well get the lot, they\'re all awesome

This one I\'m working on as a shuttle, I\'ve tested it and it can glide and land within about 200 metres on the ground, thanks to two parachutes on the back that deploy on landing. It can take off on it\'s own, but not on a flat surface (it needs to fall off the end of the runway/hit a bump to take off). Can fly at approx 90m/s before stalling, landing speeds of max: 20m/s (vertically).

My minjet, which is a bit of a misnomer... it uses the LV-909 rocket.

HMyLJ.png

Flies quite well, but needs slight nose-up trim. good for short sightseeing hops around the KSC and for approach practice.

If you want enhanced performance, switch the LV-909 for the Damned Aerospace simple .5m pusher prop. Balance remains the same, top speed is slightly increased, and fuel burn drops dramatically. Only flaw is the slight left roll tendancy from the propellor torque, which is too small to trim out. Activating the SAS gets rid of it.

IBN is proud to announce the Gosling. It began life as a much smaller aircraft, but I figured people might actually like to fly rather than skid off the runway in flaming ball of crunchy death.

She'll pitch up at about 80m/s, and I've clocked her at 740m/s. Landing the Gosling is fraught with danger though. She's liable to spin out of control without the SAS on, and with it engaged, she turns like a pig. A pretty pig, mind you :D

You want Micro-Planes? I got some really micro Micro-Planes for ya...

First is a little jet with not a whole lot of gliding ability...

ksp2012090616560378.png

And then we have a .5m fuselage unmanned drone with plenty of lift & a nice low stall speed. Also it looks a little like a mouse.

Nice! What mod is the small external tank and the mini jet?

Small external tank is Mechanical Mouse Industries Satellite Pack - http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/forum/showthread.php/13692-Mechanical-Mouse-Industries-Kethane-Payload-Packs-Released!!!

& the mini jet is Taverius' half-scaled one - http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/forum/showthread.php/15348-0-16-Spaceplane-parts-rescales-edits-and-additions

I present to you the Dart!

I'd originally decided to make a veeeeeeery small plane. This top photo shows the original attempt. It flies very nicely.

<a href="/image_zoom.php?id=/user_images/9763/1347051762m"><img src="http://images.mocpages.com/user_images/9763/1347051762m_SPLASH.jpg" border="0" width="500" height="281" alt=""></a>

I tinkered with the design, right through to version 3-B, which can be seen below. (B meaning I switched from a basic jet engine to a turbofan engine). I have to say, this is one of my favourite designs. So agile yet sooooo stable.... and fast, don't forget fast :D

<a href="/image_zoom.php?id=/user_images/9763/1347051764m"><img src="http://images.mocpages.com/user_images/9763/1347051764m_SPLASH.jpg" border="0" width="500" height="281" alt=""></a>

Sherrey Kerman, one of my Mun-Minmus 'Super Veterans', is also the first choice for Spaceplanes and Aircraft. Undoubtedly the most experienced pilot/kerbonaut.

<a href="/image_zoom.php?id=/user_images/9763/1347051766m"><img src="http://images.mocpages.com/user_images/9763/1347051766m_SPLASH.jpg" border="0" width="500" height="281" alt=""></a>

<a href="/image_zoom.php?id=/user_images/9763/1347051768m"><img src="http://images.mocpages.com/user_images/9763/1347051768m_SPLASH.jpg" border="0" width="500" height="281" alt=""></a>

It takes off very quickly, which is good.

<a href="/image_zoom.php?id=/user_images/9763/1347051771m"><img src="http://images.mocpages.com/user_images/9763/1347051771m_SPLASH.jpg" border="0" width="500" height="281" alt=""></a>

The 2 standard canards on the back ensure a very smooth manoeuvring experience. However, the plane was struggling with pulling up in some cases, so the addition of the ailerons on the outermost parts of the wings were to rectify that, but they also reduced the smoothness from the turning. You win some, you lose some

I think the Kerbal Military have their eyes on this design. They usually want our designs for something...
