I find a simple solution is to just add a bunch of Spark engines where you want sparklers.

Space Shuttle Engines had some, unfortunately it has last been updated for KSP 1.1.x; the author is still around but the mod seems abandoned.

"IRL" Kerbal stock engines wouldn't need the sparklers, as they run on liquid fuel (equivalent to kerosine) rather than Hydrogen.  The sparklies are there to burn off Hydrogen gas released before ignition (not actually to ignite the engines as I once thought).  But it's a really cool effect, so I don't see why "reality" should spoil the fun .

Using the spark engines is still a decent compromise

Just tried a few things and found that sepratrons, thrust-reduced to between 15 to 50% also produce a nice sparky effect.
