Rapiers auto switching to closed on takeoff

Recommended Posts

Well, not a lot more. But definitely some more -- at least a couple.

Also, note that if you place a part directly behind an engine, it will cancel all the thrust from that engine. There are at least two engines there that I'd be concerned about.

Additionally to the tips from fourfa and bewing, I want to add that you can prevent auto switching by right clicking the rapiers and set them to 'manual switching'. So if your engines run out of air, they will flame out instead of switching to closed cycle mode. To switch them manually, use an actiongroup (if you don't play in sandbox mode and haven't unlocked level 3 of the SPH/VAB, you can already edit standart actiongroups like 'Abort' on level 2)

On the same subject and for clarification's sake, I have two further questions:

  1. Is that to mean that when jet engine exhaust impinges on parts, it does not overheat them the way that rocket exhaust does?
  2. In order for the drag-reducing shock cone node-covering trick to work, there clearly must be a limit to what 'directly behind' means.  Do you happen to know what it is?

It acts just like a rocket engine. It overheats the impinged parts, and cancels the thrust. However, jet engines produce much less heat than a rocket engine, because they are so much more efficient.

Nope, I don't know. I do know that you can clip a rocket engine and a jet engine together -- so that they have the same visible "end". And both of them work.
