Question about crew filling

Recommended Posts

(Not the creamy stuff inside, but the order the game fills craft with.)

I had to send Jeb, Bill and Bob on a Kerbin roving mission to keep them safe because, no matter what, my game always puts them in my <strike>suicide booths</strike> space ships first. I never noticed it before .22 because I have zero regard for Kerbalkind in sandbox, and I was just wondering if anybody else has had this issue. I hadn't seen it come up in this forum since the update, and I would like to let them hang out in the astronaut complex instead of keeping them in hiding in the mountains.

As a thanks for responding, my first working rover on another planet:

Never bothered with them before SCIENCE.

I agree. How are we ever going to train up the new blood if these 3 drama queens keep grabbing the limelight? I'd like to see a NASA style roster with flight crews being rotated fairly. I don't mind doing the assignments myself, but it's annoying to have to keep turfing Jeb out of the pilot's seat for every damn flight.

I believe that whenever you launch a new design, the game automatically fills the crew seats in the order your kerbonauts are listed in the roster. If you launch from the launchpad / runway instead of the VAB / SPH, however, I believe it takes you to a screen that allows you to fill the seats manually every time.

In the VAB or SPH you can go to the most right blue button at the left top of the screen to 'assign' the Kerbonauts you want. They should be on the available crew list of course, otherwise you can only select the three Kerbateers. ;-)

When you launch after doing this the selected Kerbals will be at the helm.

They keep returning. You remove them, then edit the vessel a bit more, then you check the crew, there they are. I've sent them to low orbit station because of that.

I'd love it if the VAB popped up a window confirming crew choices before launch. I've tried to launch unmanned return vehicles (they have a pod, but I want it empty) and every time I revert to the VAB to fix a minor thing it re-fills the craft. I tried saving the craft with no crew to no avail, but rather than save crew details in the vehicle file I would prefer a popup window as crew details may change depending on the flight objective for a multipurpose craft.

Having it default to an empty craft would be best, and have an "auto-fill" button that takes the first kerbals available and sticks them in the pod.
