Low framerate in SPH and VAB

Recommended Posts

KSP Version:

0.90 Windows x32 from Steam running on Windows 8.1 x64

Hardware:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955

RAM: 8 GB

GPU: Asus EAH6970 DCII/2DI4S/2GD5 DirectCU II (AMD Radeon HD 6970 with 2 GB VRAM)

What Happens:

When building a plane or rocket in the SPH and VAB, the framerate will drop a lot when looking at the open doors.

The same happens when looking down to the ground.

With low framerate I mean way less than 10 fps, sometimes it feels like 1 fps!

It doesn't matter if the game is started with "-force-gfx-st".

Updating the GPU drivers didn't help. I am using Catalyst 14.12 Omega at the moment.

I also had the problem with older versions of KSP. I'm not sure when it started (0.20 maybe). I didn't say anything because it was alpha software and not optimized. But now it's in beta and I'd like the developers to have a look at the performance.

Steps to Replicate:

1. Start the game, create or load a savegame and enter VAB or SPH.

2. The framerate is now very low as the default camera view points to the open doors.

3. Place a part to allow camera rotation.

4. Rotate the camera so it's facing the back walls.

5. The framerate goes up by a lot. The game feels fluid again.

6. Rotate the came so it's facing down.

7. The framerate goes down again.

I'm not sure why this happens. Everything else is running just fine. Could it be the outside of the building causing this? Or the amount of kerbals on the ground? Is there a way to disable the display of the kerbals to determine if they are the cause?

I have noticed lower frame rates when I see areas where the ground crew roams around. I try to keep the view up higher because of that. However, I wouldn't say that the slowdown equates to 1fps.

Try to open the debug log (ALT+F2) and see if messages are getting spammed to the log.

As a random thought, a lot of people are experiencing problems with the edge highlighting. Try turning of AA in the Settings menu and see if that changes anything.

Cheers,

The PPFX edge highlighting seems to be causing a few issues too, so it might be worth toggling that option, if you can. One other thing you can try is disabling display of space center crew entirely. It'll remove the kerbals and their shenanigans from the VAB and SPH scenes, which can sometimes help with framerates.
