  1. That is what those DANGER markers are for; they indicate egress panels, ejector seats, explosive canopies, etc. that are attached with explosive bolts and are capable of a powered jettison. Those portals look fairly modular from the inside, so it's very possible that they're an emergency manway:
  2. Yes, it rotates 360 degrees, tilts 90 degrees up and down and the winch is positionable from about 1m off the center axis to two full gantry rail lengths (~20 meters); the photo shows it at full extension. The original (50m+) version was fully stable in translation, however the linkages between girder segments were very susceptible to torsional forces around the vertical axis. It would oscillate through a good 90 degrees for minutes after rotating it. This version (the 25m variant) has integrated plates and struts to damp the negative torsional effects of boom rotation, however they are still apparent, especially on the Mun. Notice the supplemental RCS thrusters along the boom and the ~600 units of monopropellant strapped to the cupola module... Does a fine job of helping me manually counteract the oscillations. With regards to its transport to the Mun, I used ExtraplanetaryLaunchpads to build it on the Mun rather than flying it up. HOWEVER... I originally did consider adding some 90 degree hinges and docking ports to the outriggers to 'fold' it up (with the boom at full vertical and the gantry fully retracted). Notice that the base is a 2.5m LFO tank; a 2.5m docking collar and the above modifications and it's just about launch ready...
  3. It persisted for a good ten seconds or so, enough time for me to "[" over to it from my rover and snap the screenshot. And it really did look like a geyser; good description. The concentric circles around it were moving outward/upward as well.
  4. In my experience, KAS pipes with LFO are not what you'd think they would be. They will allow you to do a resource transfer (right-click, alt right-click) when connected, but won't automatically pull fuel from tank to tank for a running engine. So, what I've done is burn up all the fuel in the primary tank, shutdown the engines, resource transfer LFO from secondaries into primaries, restart engines. Monopropellant, Xenon and Kethane all pull automagically once they're piped together however. My example would be at my Kethane fuel farm on the Mun: Kethane flows freely through all three modules, and the driller module's converter unit will fill the appropriate silo tanks with both monopropellant and xenon without issue. However, they won't refine LFO into the Jumbo-64s at the top, pipe or not. So, there's a second converter at the top of the silos that just processes Kethane into LFO. BUT...It won't fill any LFO tanks except the central one. So, from there, it's manual resource transfer one tank at a time, until all five are full. Same thing when I send a ship in for refueling: hook up and resource transfer one tank at a time.
  5. Hello, PUNiSH3R here. Long time lurker and I decided to finally make an account and start posting, mostly because I thought others might get a kick out of this: Kinda reminds me of the concept animations of a cesium fountain clock. Would this be a sighting of one of the Kraken? Whatever that was, it quickly ate half of Mun Base Ichi and thoroughly annihilated my carefully constructed platform crane: If you can't tell, I'm in the throes of Mun base fever, with a Kethane addiction and ExtraplanetaryLaunchpads to boot. So introductions-wise, I'm a staunch opponent of MechJeb, I like things that move (e.g., KAS, IR), I'm mentally planning the launch profiles and mission parameters for manned resource extraction bases on Duna and Eve and I've got a two YEAR orbital probe mission to the Jool system currently in progress (so much for launch windows...). And I've done orbital calcs for KSP on paper. More than once. Voluntarily. Oh, and I've already burned through the entire techtree in career mode - legitimately. Finished that before 0.23: only took a [few dozen] series' of moon missions, three Minmus missions, a Duna landing and an Eve landing oh, the sleepless nights... It got so bad I started launching research landers in waves: Great opportunity to get really good at manual landings... Landed this one darkside, on a slope: So here's my ribbons thus far. As you can tell, I've been developing heavily within the Kerbin sphere and not much anywhere else. My intent is to use the Mun as a primary launch platform for manned, interplanetary missions: IRL, I'm (old. Who uses IRL anymore?) a mechanical engineer that just started back at university. So, I'm a student when the engineer gig, KSP or sleeping aren't getting in the way... Good to meet you!
  6. Built my THIRD gantry crane design in the last 24 hours... (The first was over 50 meters tall) Integrated the 25 meter version with my Mun base... Considering rebuilding my resource cache on the Mun to lower the polygon count... Generated my Ribbons: That's about it. How everyone else is enjoying KSP as much as I am!
