It's funny that the guy who designed it is called hazard.
Those tube "suits" avoid the fact that humans already have very capable arms, no robotics needed.
Also, those things would have sparked a whole lot of controversy; "Man didn't walk on the Moon, they were still in their tube".
Those tube suits are designed that way because, when wearing a bulky spacesuit, human arms are severely reduced in capability, with the gloves especially having little freedom of motion and often causing bruising after extended use.

The reason I support the idea of launching a Europa probe on SLS in the early 2020s, is due to the fact that otherwise, there will be a 6 YEAR GAP between EM-1 and the ARM crewed mission!
-
Gives SLS a payload. Good stuff.
We really need a payload for SLS between 2018 and 2024, so I desperately hope that a Europa mission of some kind gets picked up for the real EM-2.
-
Manned?... No, absolutely not.
Unmanned?.... Maybe.
Will we actually get that probe to another star within this century? Not a chance.
-
Hate to be pushy Gregrox, but I really think a Duna landing should be in the "normal" AAP challenge since von Braun did plan to continue AAP all the way to a Mars landing.
Actually, Von Braun's plans for a Mars landing were part of the original STS program.
-
By all means, take your time!

I use 6.4x RSS, FAR, and a bunch of other realism mods, as well as a ton of stockalike parts mods, in order to make a sort of compromise between stock and reality.
-
That's actually really interesting, but I'd never heard of it before. Do you have a source? I'd like to read about it in detail.
I made it up, based off wanting to combine the real life Voyager missions and the Voyager program that eventually became Viking.
-
If I'm not mistaken, the focus for the Apollo Application Program interplanetary missions was manned spaceflight. Hence the use and reuse of Apollo hardware.
Well, if you read the plan that I posted, you'll see that it involves "Voyager" becoming a catch-all term for any space probe that launches on a Saturn V.
-
I'm planning for a 278+possibly more run.
Could you include some points for unmanned missions to the planets?
-
Well, I'll be out of town for the weekend, but as soon as I get back, I'll start trying to make some Tantares Procedural Parts.
-
plus there is very little need for station keeping at *some* of the L-points which is nice because you can stay there almost indefinitely. Plus if you put a fuel depot/ station there it is a good place for spacecraft to stop on missions
That's another reason that I forgot, in lunar orbit, masscons force you to perform frequent reboosts.
-
Have you ever considered making plane parts? Like old soviet aircraft? Even though I know you have a lot to deal with right now. :0
Is asked how he felt about making fighter plane parts an April 2nd, he wasn't enthusiastic.
-
Well, for my 1.0 Saturn Valike I ended up stripping the engines on the first and second stage down to 4. Guess I'll be putting that fifth one back.
Remember, the Saturn V actually shut down it's central engine during the first stage burn.
-
Well, I never finished my submission for the previous version of this challenge (seen in my current sig), so I'll probably be going at it again.
EDIT: I'l probably go with the plan I've established here, using .90, 6.4x, FAR, and a crapload of parts mods.
-
If it was in lunar orbit, you would have to acieve lunar escape velocity and earth escape velocity, whereas with the lagrange point, you only have to use a little more time and Dv to go to the moon, and far less Dv for Earth Escape.
-
Really? it used to be covered in golden foil, not the silvery chrome one. Looks cool though! Seems like i need to get some of those parts from FASA again, i haven't really played with it for a while.
That's because the picture is in black and white.

A few tonnes is not light.
And yes, I mean propellant.
The lightest CSM was 14 tonnes...
Yeah, if you include the fuel, the SPS is definitely really massive. I was refering to the engine alone, which was light enough that thay didn't switch to a smaller one when Direct Ascent was nixed.
-
To add on to this idea, it might be cool if you could select a mission patch for the whole program, then the mod would automatically add the number.
-
For astronomical observations, it's good because you never lose the signal. For use as an exploration gateway, it's good because it takes very little Dv to get from L1 or L2 to the Moon or an escape trajectory.
-
That's one reason I like Boeing's mars mission proposal, it gives us an SEP tug that practically begs to be used more than once. My ultimate scenario would be a mars mission similar to the one proposed for STS, but i recognise that that will not happen.
-
The Apollo CSM had a heavy SPS, though... Which added quite a bit of mass.
Actually, unless you mean the engine and the fuel, the SPS was quite light.
-
That is a little dumb, I'll be honest. Thanks for the info!
Could split the heatshield into a separate part, could...
Yeah, they need to give the pods some resources. I wouldn't take the ablators out, it make the post landing Soyuz look a lot more realistic.

Looks like it was fixed 15 days ago:

That's just the dlls, so you'll have to download the mod from the OP then replace the dlls with those. Not sure if it works, but worth a try.
Oh! Thanks for telling me!

No, this is an alternate history.
EDIT: By the way, when are we going to see more RftS?
