  1. I would be very surprised at that. We haven't spoken to anyone from the media, at least that I'm aware of...
  2. We live in Portland, as does a surprisingly large portion of Oregon's residents actually.
  3. It really has floored me how quickly the community has stepped up and offered to help us out. I've always felt an affinity with this community, doing what I can to help and sharing what I've done with KSP that seemed interesting as well. Knowing that the community cares right back and is willing to lend a hand when the whole world seems to have gone pear-shaped is really an amazing feeling. Thank you to everyone.
  4. Most of the photos I took during the aftermath did not come out well. One in particular, however blurred it may be at the edges, perfectly captures just what it was like though. Yes, that is the very lamp that started the blaze. The warpath of destruction from the flames ignited above it is only hinted at.
  5. I was woken at 5AM this morning to the desperate yelling of my mother, whom I live with for her sake. "Wake up, the roof is on fire!" For but a split second, I thought it merely a dream, but my mind is far too agile to be so deceived. Within seconds I was up, and swiftly struggled to get myself clothed. I exited my room to the smell of smoke, the cat running down the hall desperately in terror, and a fireman gesturing me out of the house. Again, were my mind not so agile, I would be wont to believe it was merely a nightmare. I inquired after the cat, but there was no chance to do anything; we had to trust that her inherent fear would drive her into hiding under my parents' bed (which she fortunately did). For a tense 90 minutes after, sheltered under the meager roof of our car-park, we waited in anticipation and fear, rain pouring down in occasional spurts overhead. I pieced together the story from what I was told by my parents and the firefighters: dad had lit an old Aladdin lamp on the fireplace mantle, but not adjusted the wick first. The flames shot upward, catching the ceiling alight. His mind of late has been clouded, and he did not even think to waken myself or my mother, instead trying to battle the flames himself. For the sake of all of my family, I am eternally grateful that one of our neighbors saw the fire and called the fire department, and that the firefighters were able to rouse us and get us out. The damage to our home is significant, but it would have been far worse had the fire department not been contacted. The ceiling is destroyed along two-thirds of the structure in patches, the roof similarly damaged. Though technically no fire reached below the ceiling, the fact remains that the damage caused from piercing the ceiling and roof to put out the flames has done significant damage to the floor and some of the furniture. Certainly we have a problem with an excess of water on the floor, along with the debris of the torn-away ceiling. We have spent much of the last 90 minutes gathering together what meager supplies we can, contacting the insurance company, and arranging for housing for our cat. I sit on my porch as I type this from my laptop, spared as it fortunately was from any harm, wondering what awaits us now. We will go to live with my aunt and grandmother for a time, and I can only hope that this mess will be resolved in a timely fashion. One of the inevitable side-effects of all of this, of course, is that I cannot access my main PC for the time being. I don't even know for sure if it's alright, as my room was one of the areas that they had to break through the ceiling. Water seeped into my room, right over my entertainment area, and I am hoping that whatever damage is done will be minimal at worst; possibly I'm being over-optimistic. Whatever the case, for the time being, my life is now turned upside-down, and I find myself adrift in a way I never expected. There is no telling just how much I have actually lost yet, and I may not find out for days. If you read through all of this, thank you. Right now, I'm thankful to be alive, and to know that I have anywhere I can turn to for support. Even if it is only a friendly word, or condolences, it really does mean a lot.
  6. The salt content of this thread should have a dietary warning. Good grief... Myself, I wouldn't mind if the game were reworked to run in some fashion on New 3DS. That would be quite nifty, though obviously there would be some rather significant changes to be made for that to work.
  7. Honestly, the Wii U is the only platform I can see handling KSP well from a control perspective outside of the PC. Convoluted interfaces would be necessary to carry over most of the functionality of the PC version to typical consoles (building in particular would be a nightmare with analog sticks), but the presence of an actual touchscreen ups the options considerably. The hardware limitations are not even half the big deal they're being made out to be; I've heard tell of people getting KSP to run just fine on less powerful hardware before. Really, controls are what make or break a game more than anything else (loading times being the next big one on the list). And in that regard, the Wii U version will potentially be the best version after the PC one.
  8. That was not at all what I was referring to. I was referring to the large quantities of hateful ignorant statements concerning the Wii U's userbase, as well as the high volume of posts that more or less can be summed up as "I think SQUAD is selling out". The former are just flame-baiting at best, and the latter serve basically the same purpose. My advice to any who wish to complain: learn to do so tactfully. Insulting 10 million people who bought a Wii U by declaring that they're all "kids, soccer moms and grannies" is not tactful. Not even a little.
  9. I am genuinely amazed at the sheer hostility and outright hatred on display here from so many users. What on earth happened to the formerly fun-loving, considerate, and helpful KSP community I used to know? It doesn't matter if the game comes to other systems than PC if you already have it on PC. KSP will not spontaneously stop working for you once those versions are out, and updates aren't going to be put on indefinite hold to support the console versions exclusively.
  10. The former, almost certainly. If it were a fake video, it would have been removed entirely. SQUAD is probably going to make an announcement within the next few days about it. My own $0.02 on the matter: the Unity 5 improvements to the KSP engine will certainly ensure the game runs better than it would using Unity 4 on the Wii U. Seeing as much of the advantage of the other two consoles mostly comes down to multi-core processing, and that's not really going to help them much with KSP, it will probably run well enough.
  11. Landing on Eve is actually very easy. You practically don't even have to try. Getting back off of Eve, on the other hand...
  12. The wheat was never an issue. The rye, on the other hand, always got in the way.
  13. Help yourself! I can even provide the .craft if you'd like. Also, if you're curious, the tool I use to check dV and TWR is called Kerbal Engineer Redux. It's a very low-impact plugin overall that simply provides extra data (both when building and optionally when flying as well). It's pretty much the spacecraft engineer's best friend.
  14. I always wondered why rocket launches are done at sea level. Wouldn't it make more sense to find the highest point possible (or even better, engineer one)? I realize there's falling debris concerns if the launch fails, but an artificial near-coastal mountain could solve that well enough. Even if you only saved a few hundred dV on the launch, that adds up to an awful lot of fuel thanks to the Rocket Equation.
  15. SQUAD knows, but for Reasons (and very good ones, I might add!), they don't disclose them. The only solid number anyone has was when Steam leaked that they'd sold a million copies before SQUAD informed Steam that they didn't want that information to be public.

    KSP Puns

I was looking for outer planets, but they proved to be rather Eeloosive.
  17. If I have any sort of narration to my missions, it's in my own voice. It's my own adventure, why shouldn't it be?
  18. It's actually theoretically possible in real life to be captured solely by gravity. It's very unlikely, of course, but due to the fact that gravity is not uniform across a body, it's entirely possible. That said, the encounter would have to be very close to already being captured in the sphere of influence of the body that it was trying to capture around, and the gravitational variation would have to be both significant and properly distributed relative to the incoming object's trajectory. It's very possible to have this happen in KSP because the SOI transition maths are less than perfect. A simple rounding error is all it takes.
  19. I'm amazed that nobody has noticed that this thread is the victim of severe necromancy...
  20. Ah man, I can't believe I missed making a Princess Bride reference by saying "One more, as always"...
  21. Poor Maxmaps. He could really use Kerbal Engineer Redux! And a few lessons on orbital physics, too... Not a lot of "new" news this time around, but interesting nonetheless.
  22. What did you expect? There is no practical answer outside of "however many it takes to make the game unstable". Everyone has a different hardware configuration, and everyone has different standards for how many mods they "need".
  23. Too many is however many you need to make the experience most satisfying for you +1. An easy rule of thumb.
  24. Skipper and Mainsail? Way overkill for your project. Consider something more like this: It's compact and fully featured, and comes in at under 50T. Comes with: full-science main probe, full-science "dumb probe", enough dV to get to Eve and circularize without aerobraking, enough fuel to return to Kerbin and safely aerobrake with the payload fully intact upon landing. Warning: Light probes are not for everyone. Not for consumption by minors, please consult your doctor before using.
