id just like to see rtgs get more love. having a small one for standby power is cool and all, but some of the rtgs they use are pretty damn powerful (some go as high as 3kw* 300w). i dont like to see them get overshadowed (both literally and figuratively) by solar panels. *that was the russian fission reactor from RORSAT, not technically an rtg
-
ive been known to use both solar panels and rtgs together. rtg gives me standby power, and solar handles all the high power stuff. realistically though the rtg is underpowered and too light and too small, and the solar panels are so op its insane. i almost always use rtgs on rovers, often several of them. i kinda wish there were some larger ones (dont go posting links to mods, i already use those).

any type of chip will be mass produced, thats just the way semiconductor fabs work. arm and x86 are pretty much polar opposites. x86 tries to be the mother of all processors that has insane performance but also huge power demands and cost. and the other end you have the arm, not a performance architecture but very low power and cost. there is a lot of wiggle room in the middle for a new architecture like mill to move in and fill the gap. supposidly it will be very easy to scale up the number of cores. so you might see it used initially in server or supercomputer designs (these are currently dominated by chips that are very power hungry, and so using mill lets you trim your power bill to run these things). i can also see it breaking into the laptop, tablet, and low end pc markets. i dont see it taking over phones though since arm will still have the very low power design. it wont be replacing our gaming rigs either where we are willing to throw large sums of money at raw performance. the designers are actually aiming for a niche market so as not to step on anyone's toes. even if its not something were ever gonna use its still interesting to see something new.

http://www.eetimes.com/author.asp?section_id=36&doc_id=1320128 ive been looking at this for awhile. its going to be a new from scratch 64-bit architecture thats going to land somewhere between arm and x86 in terms of power consumption/performance/cost. so what do you think?

analog control systems are just as good as digital control systems. the major difference is maintenance. you have to routinely re-calibrate an analog system. actually every voltage regulator in your computer contains an analog control system. and a digital control system can be resistant to emp, you just have to use vacuum tubes.

i love this cockpit

all scifi movies seem to grossly underestimate the current state of military technology. a ww2 artillery piece would have shredded kaiju meat from a safe distance. what about a battleship gun. you could have killed them before they even set foot on land. but no, you have modern jet fighters flying within a few feet of the beast firing their guns. wtf. at least use a-10s or ac130s. also we have nukes. i think we would perfer them be fired at kaiju in the ocean and dealing with the radiological effects than have the kaiju wipe out an entire city.

its pretty much virtual serial over usb. arduino handles all that for you. on the pc side this interface is exposed as a virtual com port, and on the arduino side with the serial library. this plugin looks like its designed to handle the pc side for you. from the looks of it you just need to receive the data packet, and use the data to draw your displays, these could be 7 segment displays, character lcds, graphic lcds, physical gauges, servos etc. this looks pretty versatile.

(Relatively) Good Gaming computer for under 1000$
Nuke replied to Skyler4856's topic in Science & Spaceflight
ram is cheap, dont spend over $75. a good cpu will be around $300 (no you dont have to buy the best one, just keep it current gen), a good video card in the $150-$200 range. mobo will be around $100 (get one of those minimalist micro-atx boards, less is more). spend the rest on a cheap case, psu (dont skimp, but dont overbuy either), accessories (fans), storage, any of which can be recycled from your old comp. reuse your monitor and peripherals. keep in mind that if you want a sexy looking case the size of a bus or a mobo with more stuff than you need, a power supply with a rating more than you need, custom coolers, or an ssd, you are not getting it cheap. -
probibly use one of those usb<->ttl bridge chips like was used on older arduinos (you can get breakout boards for this chip from sparkfun, see link). newer arduinos just have a usb cdc serial port integrated into the bootloader (may be able to do the same on a pic). never used pic myself, mostly an avr guy. if i change to something its gonna be arm. https://www.sparkfun.com/products/718 i got a 240x320 color tft screen with a spi interface (currently connected to a leonardo running a modded version of hackvision asteroids). might play around with having an orbiter-esque orbit gauge one of these days. *googles ellipse drawing algorithm*

cats are indeed writhing death machines who love to torture-murder small animals. thats why i love them. -
Quicksave vs Autosave
Nuke replied to MarvinKitFox's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
old autosaves should be backlogged every time a new autosave is created rather than just overwritten. if you load an ancient quicksave, and loose weeks of progress, you could just load one of the old autosaves. you might limit the number of saves to around 10 or so to keep things tidy. this is just some basic file handling code. -
i have a track ir so this is useful to me.

i would install 50 nuclear warheads. but thats just me.
