  1. First, Welcome to the forums SkeeterKermin! Hmmm, this is interesting... A fresh install and it just does not run. My first suggestion would be to re-install KSP, but that should not be necessary given that you just installed it, but its worth a shot none-the-less. My best guess is that KSP is missing some important file or there are extra files in the KSP install directory. That happens a lot when there is a major update to the game such as 1.0. So have steam wipe all files in the install directory, then re-install the game and see if it works. If not, see what other details you can glean and post them here
  2. You ran out of addressable memory in the Windows Operating System. It is the same error you would get from over-modding a game and running out of memory (Going over the 4GB limit), but in this case it was the system that ran out of memory. There are 2 ways to resolve this: 1. Switch to Windows 64bit, rather than 32bit. 32bit windows is outdated anyway. OR 2. Lower your graphics settings to reduce the amount of RAM being used overall Also, make sure that you have as few applications open at the same time as possible. For example, having many tabs in your browser, all with youtube movies, will make the crash happen a lot more often than if the game was the only application running. Hope this helps
  3. You could do that, but honestly that will cost more in legal fees than any settlement that can be negotiated. While keeping Squad's and the mod makers' names clean is in everyone's best interests, there is no effective way to stop the copyright violations without losing massive amounts of money. Our best weapon is to keep the KSP community directed to sites that are responsible and encourage the protection of intellectual property while also promoting new development off of this wonderful game.
  4. Kaos is completely correct. A real asteroid entering towards earth does not ever slow down before hitting the surface. Either 1. It burns up before ever reaching the ground OR 2. It hits the ground at several km/s, causing an incredible crater and the sonic boom created is far past enough to shatter windows from 10-20 miles away. An asteroid in the game would behave no differently, other than the fact that they don't ablate on reentry. Hence even the shallowest reentry is likely to have the asteroid hit the ground at a minimum of 500 m/s, especially the larger ones.
  5. Just build the craft, save it. Then in windows explorer go to the KSP directory within steam, to the saves folder, to the name of the game you saved the craft, to Ships/VAB, and the .craft file should be right there. Just post that and we can all use it.
  6. Yes it has, but not from sea level. This one was done from 2200m. The issue is not the atmosphere anymore. A rocket with adequate thrust (i.e >1.6 TWR on Eve) can do it in about 6-7km/s rather than the 11km/s needed previously. The issue is that thrust now scales with Isp, which is insanely low at 5atm of pressure. Hence that TWR I talked about cannot be achieved at sea level with any stock engine. The result is the rocket needs insanely more dV, not because of drag, but because of gravity losses.
  7. With experience, I generally find that when placing a tank, the tank "hiccups" when you mouse over the decoupler, because the decoupler is slightly closer to the camera than the tank, and so the placement jumps slightly. What match said is correct, it can be easy to miss the decoupler with large tanks, especially with the see-through on placement bug in the editor.
  8. The devs did not name the Sun anything. It is called "The Sun", Kerbol is a fan-made invention to follow the names for the rest of planets.
  9. The short answer with approaching a black hole is that the concepts of apoapsis and periapsis and orbit do not exist. Because of relativity (and as someone pointed out earlier), one cannot come closer to the black hole than the photon sphere, or for those of you who have seen Interstellar, the "critical orbit". While certain mechanics still apply (like conservation of momentum), they are extremely skewed due to the gamma factor caused by speeds near those of the speed of light. An aside note and interesting fact: The photon sphere is where the black hole starts from the "black" void perspective. It is NOT the event horizon. What the photon sphere means is that any photons on an INWARD trajectory to the black hole will never escape, but those on an OUTWARD trajectory can (and will). So while radiation can indeed escape from inside the photon sphere, there is not very much of it. The general concepts applying to the event horizon still apply. Also, inside the event horizon there is no such thing as conservation of momentum or energy, so anything goes!
  10. Try adding some fins to the bottom of the rocket. If the center of lift (or center of pressure) is above the center of mass, then the rocket will be unstable. Also remember that the old method of ascending to orbit no longer works. If you try to pitch over to 45 degrees at 10km, you will lose control of the rocket no matter where the Center of pressure is. My method of ascending to orbit is as follows: 1. Vertical until rocket hits 65m/s 2. SLOWLY start pitching over the rocket, gradually adjusting towards horizontal. 3. During this process, manage the speed to be slowly increasing the entire time. 4. By an altitude of 17-20km, you should be 45 degrees off the vertical and going about 500m/s 5. Keep adjusting towards horizontal. Use your horizontal velocity to push your apoapsis up, rather than vertical velocity. Hopefully this helps!
  11. I know it is a pain for such a small download and simple fix, but you need to include a license . I gotta admit though that the file is its own source code XD so you're covered there. Just a friendly reminder so that we can all keep benefitting from this simple but important fix.
  12. You can obtain a copy of the gamedata folder by unzipping the download if you download from the KSP store, or by verifying your steam installation if you are on steam. Worst come to worst back up your save and re-install the game.
  13. The settings.cfg.bak file is the file I was talking about. For some reason KSP sometimes reverts to that file even with the settings.cfg defined. The bug has been reported (somewhere on the public tracker probably since this issue has been around for awhile now), but if it is not on the public tracker don't fret, it has been reported elsewhere.
  14. You're running out of physical RAM, since your hard limit is 4GB (NOT the 32-bit limit, but the actual limitation of the computer hardware) and the system is using >1200Mb for itself, there is not enough RAM to run the game. Try lowering the texture detail to half-res, otherwise the only other solution is to buy more RAM and put it in your computer.
  15. Hmmm. I hope you did not delete the SPH directory, but if you did you can recreate it inside the ships folder. Did the editor work after that Exception or did the editor just break?
  16. This is a confirmed bug, so no need for additional reporting. The reason it does this is that the game replaces the current settings file with the default one it keeps stored *somewhere* but I don't remember where. My usual hotfix is to edit the settings.cfg file manually but I am unsure if this consistently solves the problem
  17. Exactly as Beduino said, the Squad and NASA directories were merged with the release.
  18. Can you provide more information on what you were doing? Usually the load menu does not load if there is a corrupted craft file in the SPH directory in that particular save. If the problem seems to stem from nowhere, try removing all the craft under <savename>/ships/SPH in your KSP/saves directory and try loading then.
  19. This is because the map view only uses your orbital velocity, however the planet is rotating underneath you. While your trajetory originally takes you into the water, the planet rotates the land (and KSC) back underneath you. You may have noticed that when you lift off vertically and don't turn, you often land to the west of KSC, because you lose angular velocity as your radial distance from the center of rotation increases. All the map data is correct, just based on a different set of data that is more useful when it comes to actual space travel.
  20. I just keep all previous versions of KSP stored on my hard drive still in their zip files. It does take up all the HD space though.
  21. I shelled out the full $27 when the game was 0.23 but now even after paying the full price I fell they deserve more money. I guess since they really don't have a donation option just buying extra copies off the site is the best way, although I'm sure someone at squad would be happy to set up some type of donation scheme if one asked.
