  1. Rather unimaginative I know, but I normally name them after astronauts and cosmonauts, who are remembered for doing something related to the purpose of the spacecraft, e.g. Gagarin for early orbital missions, followed by Grissom, followed by Garriot, Followed by Leonov
  2. having done some reading, it would have taken some serious lightening of the shuttle and at least 10 launches to get enough fuel into orbit to get the shuttle to the moon, let alone to the surface.
  3. what irritates me is that the shell would have been about 40 km thick. Chunks of that raining down on earth would have wiped out all life. They took an enormous gamble that should not have paid off, and yet it did.
