BUST: 1.1.X Crashes (Your Help Requested!)
Gaarst replied to Claw's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
Had a crash in the SPH after a bit of playing 1.1.2 on a near stock install (only KER, KAC and MM installed), 64-bit. Steps to reproduce: spent a little while building stuff, and the game crashed upon deleting a single part (a wing if that matters). No crash logs generated, output_log.txt and DxDiag zipped here. I can probably provide more information if needed. EDIT: one more crash in the SPH, same procedure, this time purely stock game, output_log here. -
0 out of whatever in all my past saves (3 if you count stranded Kerbals) in 3 years. 1 in 31 in the modded RSS install I put up about a year ago.

Add an atmosphere to Moho
Gaarst replied to Snowstorm's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
The Moon has an atmosphere, so does Pluto. The reason why extremely thin atmospheres are not added to the game is because KSP can't handle number as small as 10-14 bar. Also it would literally change nothing so there's no point in adding one. And KSP is not a replica of our solar system, if Mercury has an atmo doesn't mean Moho should have one. -
BUST: 1.1.X Crashes (Your Help Requested!)
Gaarst replied to Claw's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
Just had a crash in the VAB while rearranging staging. Modded install though, will try to replicate with a stock install and post logs. -
BUST: 1.1.X Crashes (Your Help Requested!)
Gaarst replied to Claw's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
Still no logs from me but some more food for thoughts: Mods have an impact on these crashes. A big one. On a "barebones" mod test install (15 mods installed but only Ven's Revamp adding/changing parts) I couldn't stay in the VAB longer than a couple minutes while building a simple rocket. -
Constant crashing
Gaarst replied to TampaPowers's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
Claw has opened a thread to gather all of these crashes in order to find a solution. Please report your issue there along with all the information needed for a standard bug report. This is valid for anyone else posting here, reporting all similar issues with all information available in a single thread will significantly increase chances to solve this bug. -
Symmertry? NOPE
Gaarst replied to 299792458 m/s's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
You need to post your logs, information about your KSP install (version, mods...) and system information. Detailed explanations in these two threads: Best of luck with your issue ! -
There is a stickied thread called the Mod Docket which has for objective to gather mod lists for people wanting to enhance their own lists. You can write your modlist there or ask @mcirish3 to link this modlist in his thread.. Nice modlist also

BUST: 1.1.X Crashes (Your Help Requested!)
Gaarst replied to Claw's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
No logs to submit right now, but I had an idea about these crashes: Could it be that these crashes are caused by a bug in the way Unity 5's PhysX version handles multithreading and more specifically unloading parts (or another CPU load) from a thread ? This would explain why the issue happens when deleting parts in the VAB or hovering with symmetry (rendering parts and deleting them quickly), on stock installs, since 1.1 only and on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. It would also explain why similar crashes (instant CTD and no error logs generated) happen when decoupling parts (transfering load from a thread to another one) in flight. I don't know much about how all of this works, so it might be utter nonsense but that is just an idea I had. Also, I will try to post logs when I encounter these crashes. Does it matter if some infomational mods are installed (KER and KAC) or strictly stock installs only ? -
Too many misc issues to be my "best" but definitely very close to the top. Welcome to the forums also !

Kinda, except worse (number war is still there). I guess it was because it was getting a bit everywhere in the forums whereas the other games are confined inside the Forum Games sections.

Built some stuff in KSP, then got annoyed after a fair amount of crashes so I started planning the future of my RSS save manned program now that I successfully completed my lunar program. Kicked off the vastly ambitious Emperor program (split in three parts: Sword, Sceptre and Crown) with the manned exploration of the Galilean moons as ultimate goal, visiting Venus and Mars in the process (aims of Sceptre and Crown programs respectively).

At what point abort of space mission is impossible?
Gaarst replied to Pawelk198604's topic in Science & Spaceflight
No. In real life most upper stages or manoeuvring systems have really low thrusts and small correction burns last several minutes. (The shuttle's OMS had about 50kN thrust) -

Gaarst replied to Pawelk198604's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Still, that's a TWR above 1 so the thing is exploding. And I don't think that just letting the booster go is a good idea (apart from the exhaust being headed straight at you, remember that the shuttle literally sits on the boosters) Though I didn't read anything about that, should probably ask NASA to be sure -

Gaarst replied to Pawelk198604's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Sitting on a 2000t stack of highly explosive material sitting on two loose (remember that the bolts that secure the SRBs are detonated at the moment of ignition) firing solid rocket booster will get you somewhere... you are not coming back from that place though. Also, 0.881 TWR for the whole stack will not lift off. 1.762 TWR on one side and 0 on the other will make the whole thing move around uncontrollably eventually leading to its demise in the course of a few seconds. Also, citing NASA's Crew Operation Manual: -
Make the Sun Kerbol
Gaarst replied to almagnus1's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
The Sun is the star the Earth is orbiting. The sun is the star whatever planet you were talking about is orbiting. The Sun is derived from the common word sun capitalised to make it a proper noun. The star Kerbin is orbiting is a sun, and there is no reason it cannot be made a Sun. Kerbol is not official and if the star Kerbin is orbiting is to be renamed, I'd enjoy having other choices. -

Gaarst replied to Pawelk198604's topic in Science & Spaceflight
The SSMEs were ignited a few seconds before the SRBs (causing a RSLS if they did not throttle up as plannned). Once the SRBs ignited, the shuttle went up. If only one of them ignited or something, then too bad... -
At what point abort of space mission is impossible?
Gaarst replied to Pawelk198604's topic in Science & Spaceflight
They can always abort. But some modes include abort to orbit (Space Shuttle had an ATO) when the spacecraft is fast enough that a failure does not prevent it to get in orbit. Wikipedia has fairly complete articles on Space Shuttle, Soyuz, Apollo and Orion abort modes if you wish to learn more. That is for manned rockets. For unmanned ones I guess there are less possibilities and they just end up trying to make sure the rocket doesn't crash on someone's house. -
Seems like a bug with 1.1.2. I haven't tried it personally, but I remember watching a stream (DasValdez) where he noticed the issue. Edit: ninja'd

Flag on Pluto - need help with math
Gaarst replied to Whateverest's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Going to Pluto with a Hohmann transfer orbit will take you 60 years and insane amounts of dV. You best option is to use a gravity assist from Jupiter (it can help in matching the inclinations too): it will save dV and time. Gravity assists are fairly easy to plan using this tool. For handwritten planning, you might want to look at the Vis-Viva equation (gives you your speed at a give altitude) or learn the maths of orbital mechanics (only way to deal with inclinations accurately AFAIK). -
Kerbol is a non-official name. The star which Kerbin is orbiting is always refered to as The Sun in the game. Edit: ninja'd

What Spaceception said is pretty accurate AFAIK. Some time ago (a few years ago actually, around 2012 IIRC), you could give negative reputation just like positive rep*. Moderators wanted to try and see if it was possible for a user to have negative rep, thus the infamous Green Iron Crown was born. While just a test at first, forum users somehow went on a "war" (more like a game) over that, with people giving positive rep to GIC and other giving negative rep. As with every subject that gets out of hand, moderators put an end to this by deleting the GIC account and removing the possibility to give negative rep. (I wasn't there at the time so these are things I read but not lived.) * Remember that before the forums migration, giving rep was different: instead of just a like, giving rep gave up to 5 rep points (depending on your post count and stuff) and you could write a message along it; so it was much more personal and a bit less common than just giving a like when reading something you like (at least from my POV)

Constant crashing
Gaarst replied to TampaPowers's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
I must admit having to wait for Squad to come back from vacation, release 2 or 3 more patches and for the mods I use to update is somehow frustrating. Now, I agree that having 60 mods might play a role in the instant crashed I get when deleting a single part in the VAB. I would like to play stock in the meanwhile, but alas, I can't design a ship without launching the game a handful of times. (This was a useless rant, you may come back to whatever you were doing.) -
Why Does Anybody Use Engine Gimbal?
Gaarst replied to Geschosskopf's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I like when I press a button and when that makes my rocket turn. I don't like using too much SAS (OP) and I usually don't want to bother with RCS or Verniers for the sake of part count (except when docking). So I use gimballed engines. Try make a proper gravity turn with an Ares I design in KSP: no gimbal = rocket goes straight up. And there are not that much losses due to gimbal; eg: a 10° gimbal still spits 98% of its thrust in the right direction.
