[New] Space Launch System / Orion Discussion Thread
RCgothic replied to ZooNamedGames's topic in Science & Spaceflight
To be fair, a raptor didn't spend just 48h in the factory. I'd guess it's more like 3-4 months and they have multiple on the go at once. Still, 3-4 years is "nuclear power plant" or "hydroelectric dam" timescales. No way a single engine should take that long to make. -
An environmental impact statement for using Boca Chica as a launch site for vehicles up to Falcon Heavy exists. https://www.faa.gov/space/environmental/nepa_docs/spacex_texas_eis/ Suborbital launches of Starship from BC are covered under this assessment. Orbital launches of Superheavy probably require a new statement. The determination of the new statement is widely known to be in process.

First good news for blue in a while: If this is equivalent to starhopper they're two years behind the curve. Which is a better situation to be in than most. Edit: lol, tater. Knew I should have just posted the links and edited in the commentary later!

Embedded Nozzles into hull VS Outward Nozzles
RCgothic replied to Spacescifi's topic in Science & Spaceflight
On some rockets embedding the nozzles would mean putting at least some thrusters inside a propellant tank. That's non-ideal. -

That's what I was worried about. Now up to 9 months delay on a 4 year program because BO is a poor loser.
-
True, but that'll be "weeks" according to Elon. Regulatory approval is definitely months.
-
Nope. Subject to regulatory approval, which could be months.

Starship won't have LES because the Mars version can't have LES. Crew-rated Earth version with a LES? Removed the LES for Mars? That's a change and now it's not crew-rated anymore.
-
Starship will go beyond LEO.

The dragon test failure wasn't intended to be a test to destruction, but it had nothing to do with being wet. A leaky check valve admitted a slug of oxidiser into a high pressure helium line. This then got fired like a bullet into a titanium valve, causing an ignition. This was a completely unforeseeable failure and the check valves were subsequently designed out. Criticisms of Dragon should at least be accurate.

totm dec 2019 Russian Launch and Mission Thread
RCgothic replied to tater's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Seriously, these comments were beyond inflammatory. Grossly misogynistic and baseless. NASA has pinpointed the exact time the leak started and can account for the locations of their astronauts before and after that time, nowhere near the Russian modules. This information has been shared with Roscosmos. And the idea that *anyone* could run a drill on the station without anyone noticing and without getting metal shavings everywhere is patently ridiculous. -
Now this seems more complicated.

what, they actually are still at it. https://www.blueorigin.com/blue-moon/national-team The 16 flights is already debunked. This is embarrassing, stop it.

totm dec 2019 Russian Launch and Mission Thread
RCgothic replied to tater's topic in Science & Spaceflight
In which Rogozin baselessly defames a US astronaut and releases previously undisclosed medical information about them to cover for Roscosmos's ground side screw up and also deflect from the issues with Nauka: Seriously. I hope the astronaut in question sues him. -
Wow, expected it to be longer than that tbh.

They knew and they minimised. IMO this is a crime and there should be substantial jail terms.

Elon actually touched on this in part 2 of the interview with Tim. Dragon can never have a failure. The development of Dragon was the polar opposite of Starship and it's worked perfectly on every flight. Starship doesn't need to work perfectly on every flight. It just needs to work enough.
