Niemand303, Beautiful pictures! Beale, Does this mean that you're redesigning the Salyut as well? Why the sudden desire to redesign everything? I'm not complaining, it means more content for us.

Catthedragon, Stayputniks do not have any SAS. That means that your rocket will spin around wildly out of control unless it is very simple and perfectly symmetrical. The only thing that you can once your Stayputnik-driven rocket spins out of control is throttle your engine. Does that sound like what you're experiencing?

I designed only spaceplanes for an entire month. I find designing custom rockets tedious now, but spaceplanes are always a fun challenge. Actually, the only reason that I use rockets these days is because of historical parts packs like Tantares.

Neat, there's a whole thread devoted to SSTO's. Time to learn how the masters do it. Here's a little MIG-alike that I built using the Tantares add on, procedural wings, and stock parts.
-
Beale, You're really on a roll. How do you design models so quickly? Do you work in Unity as part of your day job? I had some extra time and designed a "modern" Tanta-MIG styled after the 35. Lighter, twin engines, one large TAC canister and three small ones. The TantaMIG flies like a dream. Sadly, my first flight almost ended in disaster when I ran out of fuel. I was cocky. I thought that I could get into orbit with only 1/4th a tank of fuel. Pride goeth before the parachute.

Thanks! It is very easy to fly: it is perfectly balanced, and the wheel position means that it will lift off on its own. Just press the space bar and it will naturally assume a 10-15% incline. Unfortunately, the TWR is low and the lift is also low; fighter jets were not meant to go to orbit! Also, FAR limits the thrust of jets by 50% by default, and further limits the Rapier to the point where it's almost unusable for SSTO spaceplanes. Here is the craft file if anyone wants to play around with it. Flying in NEAR or with the B9 engines makes it shoot up like a "space bullet".

Cool! I hope that other TAC users find it useful. Sorry for spamming the thread. This is my day off and I've wisely decided to blow the morning by playing KSP. Here is a stock +Procedural Wings + Tantares "MIG-like" SSTO spaceplane. I think that the spaceplane is actually more efficient than any shuttle design that I can create with stock + Tantares parts.

Flamerboy, To embed IMGUR albums use the And a bonus, a shuttle launch with a Proton. The first stage lifted the light shuttle out of the atmosphere easily. Then something strange happened: it spun out of control as soon as it passed the 75,000m mark. I don't know why, but I could not get it to stabilize. The launch was a failure, but all of the parts were recovered. At least it produced some attractive screen shots! On an unrelated note, I hate the MKII inline clamp. It is a real pain to use when docking, and it is non-functional in the SPH or VAB.

Awesome. This does sort of make the full MIR a tiny bit overpowered compared to other station plugins, but I don't think that there's any reason to complain - the same resources and capabilities can be achieved by sticking 4 TAC containers onto any part. If anyone has any ideas for TAC re-balancing other Tantares parts I'd be happy to write up more configs. Also, if anyone has any ideas for other resource systems let me know. For example, I could add a "TST Desperation System" that turns "waste" into food. TAC's very flexible, so it's easy to create an option like that. Edit: A better example would be a "TST Greenhouse" that turns Kerbal waste into food. Maybe in the V-C1, Polaris, Mianbo, and/or TKS KS-01 block?

Beale, That new Soyuz capsule is really nice. It is your best design yet. Beale & Horus, Here are two simple ATM config files and a Readme to show where to place them. If you want to preserve the beautiful textures, just change the enabled = true to enabled = false. ATM will then compress all of your plugins BUT the Tantares files. Tantares + TantaresLV will then use around 180MB of memory. Beale, Here is a modified TAC file with values based on the real Soyuz/Salyut/etc. Changes: The TST Orbital contains life support for 30 days for 1 Kerbal. The extra supplies should be transferred to the station after docking. The TST Orbital module contains a toilet (water purifier). The ALN KS-01 Orbital Block contains supplies for 7 days for 1 Kerbal. The Hamal Orbital contains enough supplies for 107 days for 6 Kerbals. 107 days of food, 7 days of water, 14 days oxygen (this assumes that the station has at least one water purifier and carbon extractor). It also contains room for waste so that you can clean out your station. The V-C1 has a water purifier (toilet) and an emergency oxygen system (produces oxygen from water). The V-C2 has the main oxygen system (extracts carbon dioxide produces oxygen). The V-C3 has supplies adjusted for 1 Kerbal, 7 days. The oxygen filter, water purifier, etc. are all branded with Tantares "TST" names. You can turn on the "TST Water Purifier" and "TST Oxygen System" by right clicking the V-C1 and V-C2. They use up a small amount of electricity while on. The "TST Bckup Oxygen" generator can be turned on in the same way. Note: the V-C1 and V-C2 can hold more water/oxgen/etc. than they come with by default. This is so that they can hold up to 14 days worth for a full 6 Kerbal crew while the purifier and oxygen system are running. This configuration works very well with both TAC and the TAC Fuel Balancer plugin. If you use TAC Fuel Balancer to automatically route carbon dioxide into the TST Oxygen generator, and wastewater into the TST Water purifier, then a MIR station can support 6 Kerbals for 107 days. A Progress can fully restock the station. Once the station has been restocked, transfer waste products to the Progress and send it home! Edit: I did not modify the Soyuz/TST Crew module. I'm not sure where the configuration for that is located. Beale, is there a config for that? If not, would you like me to make one?

Okay, I will make a new TAC config file for Tantares in the next 20 minutes or so. Looking at the resources as they are, they don't make much sense. TAC has changed a lot since it first came out. Tantares works fine with Active Texture Management's aggressive version. The version you want on that page is x86-Aggressive-Release.zip. With it, Tantares barely adds any memory. Edit: "barely any" = 50MB for Tantares and 7.3MB for LV. Edit #2: I have created an Active Texture Management config file for Tantares and Tantares LV. I will upload them along with the TAC file.

Beale, I've played around with the Salyut/MIR parts for a while with TAC. How would you feel about adding the TAC carbon extractor and water purifier to the Salyut operation block? They exist in those blocks on the real station. If it would be helpful, I could experiment with adding them to the Tantares_Extra_TAC.cfg file to make sure that they work. Of course, food will still need to be brought up by a TKS or Progress at regular intervals. On that note, I do not think that the Progress carries enough food. Oxygen and water can be taken care of in part by the carbon extractor and water purifier in the Salyut parts, but food is a problem. The Progress is supposed to carry enough food for 6 cosmonauts to survive on for months. The real Progress holds 2350kg of supplies that includes 358kg of food, 420kg of water, and a small supply of oxygen to replace what's lost to the inefficiency of the carbon extractor. In comparison, the Tantares Progress holds 6.5kg of food, and 4.35kg of water. This means that the station requires a Progress run every few days. Edit: to be specific, a Progress is supposed to hold 107 days worth of all resources.

Beale, I found a weird bug. I'm not sure how to explain it, so please see the following pictures. The new Proton fuel tanks cannot be attached radially. They clip through radial decouplers. This happens with every radial decoupler. The R7 parts attach without a problem to every radial decoupler.

One argument for the OM being thinner is that it can fit within a 1.25 fairing. Of course, modern Soyuz rockets use fairings that are wider than the rocket. Aka there is some bulge on the real rockets.

I think that you are right. The CGI model in the ESA video shows the port in the wrong place! That is funny but a little annoying. The NASA diagram, Wikipedia, ESA, Russian space, etc. all show it on the bottom. I think that you are over-thinking this. The current Tantares Soyuz model looks great. PS: if it would help, I could try to make some simple color variations once you've created the textures. i.e. black Soyuz, silver Soyuz with white stripe, etc. Edit: .

Beale, you may find this on the Soyuz helpful. The hatch on the orbital module appears to be on the top half, not the bottom as in your design.

I like the lego aspect of Tantares. I like that the parts can be used with standard sized parts from stock, and from other packs. Please don't change that by adding in custom sizes. Seconded! I am looking forward to the day when Beale designs an N-1. I've tried the existing ones and they all have either usability or visual flaws.

Can you copy Bobcat's design, or would you find that unethical? Is it possible that Tantares equipment failures are caused by the covert actions of a rogue foreign nation? Time to get Kerbal Tantares Group (KTG) on the case.

Wow. Thank you for the quick fix. Coincidentally, the ammonia sensor in the ISS went off this afternoon and the crew evacuated to the Russian part. The American/International part is sealed up. They may have to vent the American portion of the ISS, patch the leak, and send an emergency ammonia shipment up for the cooling system.

Tragedy strikes my MIRalike station! Beale, the TST docking ports (probes) still explode violently when undocking. 1. I undock my Soyuz. Time to send two guys home. Kaboom. The orbital module vaporizes. 2. The crew module is luckily thrown into a sub-75km orbit. It orbits Kerbin a few times before landing safely. 3. The remaining crew member escapes on a TKS. 4. The damaged MIR plummets towards Kerbin. 5. Another TST port explodes, incinerating the Hamal orbital module and some of the TAC Life support modules. 6. Most of the station crashes into Kerbin and explodes. The Hamal control block and its engine are all that survive. I'm going to use stock docking parts from now on. Sigh. Time to design a MK2 version of the MIR...
