Asteroid Capture Difficulty vs. Your Expectations
DonLorenzo replied to elxverde's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Wait. If you have the capacity to 'kill off most of its velocity' how did you not manage to avert its trajectory? -
Apollo style to Mun in RSS (almost stock)
DonLorenzo replied to von Ziegendorf's topic in KSP Fan Works
Awesome! Well done & I'm proud to be the inspiration That square launcher is a beast. I use a very similar approach except it's round and the top stage uses asparagus. I'm at work now so watched it without sound, but it seemed to be a solid mission! -
KSP Contracting! A fun series/game in which you build the craft!

Thanks! That makes three submissions for the next episode, I hope to be able to do it this evening! -
KSP Contracting! A fun series/game in which you build the craft!
DonLorenzo replied to DonLorenzo's topic in KSP Fan Works
A bit sooner than expected; here's episode 2! There's some flying, some doom and some science all included in this episode I have two submissions for the next episode already, if there's time I'll use them both or perhaps keep one in reserve. Keep the submissions coming in the meantime! Enjoy! -
Yep, it's pure gameplay. The RSS mod works just fine (the terrain is a bit bland because it's basically just stretched out, but that's it!) and if you think back to a time when there wasn't any timewarp implemented you'll understand why Kerbin is the size that it is. These days we have all sorts of tools however so it's not that big a deal. Give it a go, getting to orbit is a whole new achievement again!

Nuclear Pulse Propulsion: Absurd Unscientific Concept?
DonLorenzo replied to DJEN's topic in Science & Spaceflight
There's a good BBC documentary about it (and the life of its chief designer/proponent, Freeman Dyson) It's called 'To Mars by a-bomb' and hey! I found it on YouTube All your questions are addressed and many other interesting things. (In a nutshell, the answer to most are 'surprisingly, yes!') -
Rocket engine malfunction
DonLorenzo replied to m1017242's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Not having remotetech installed myself I'd hazard a guess that your rocket is unmanned and you're somehow losing signal? Again I have no idea what the mod specifically does, so it could be completely wrong, but perhaps have a look in that direction -

How do I capture this asteroid?
DonLorenzo replied to WhiteWeasel's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Rendez-vousing with an asteroid thats on an impact or low PE hyperbolic trajectory can be approximated by a 'catching a falling ball' analogy. You're not really matching two ellipses in space and time, but timing a certain point of one ellipse (your orbit) to coincide with a point on a more or less straight line. IMO this is easier than an orbital rendez-vous, in concept at any rate. What I do is make sure the planes are aligned properly and then adjust my AP to be as close as possible to the trajectory of the infalling asteroid. Then I tweak the height (and thus also the timing) of the AP so that an encounter or close approach happens. If you're in time you'll meet the asteroid rather high where maneuvers are still cheap enough for modest-sized-vessels. I hope that made some sense! -
What an Asteroid actually should do.
DonLorenzo replied to MalfunctionM1Ke's topic in KSP1 Discussion
The one takeaway from that video is that russians are made of friggin steel. Seriously. They remain so calm whilst observing what very well could be PLANETARY ANNIHILATION. I wouldn't be confident that wasn't going to happen seeing such a streak coming on anyway. Then again, maybe it's just too unexpected and strange to provoke any kind of reaction quickly -
KSP Contracting! A fun series/game in which you build the craft!

And here we go with the first episode live! Hope you enjoy it -
Hi space fans, Opposite my difficulty and realism focused series 'KSP to Mars' I'm now starting a slightly more whimsical series that's set in full stock KSP and will focus on getting science and playing with the new asteroids and building multi-asteroid space structures with them protecting kerbin from impactors. There's a few rules and twists: Rules: -Only 10 astronauts, ever. If they all die, that's it. Game over. If they're all lost, robotic rescue missions remain an option. -Only one launch every 30 (kerbal) days -One new (random) asteroid tracked per episode. Asteroids are never untracked. Twists: -You build the ships! Think of a mission or thing you'd like to see and build it. I'll use it in the next episode. -I make the persistent.sfs available after every episode. Feel free to play in it (it should become interesting), do stuff to it in your own videos or anything of the sort. I'm keeping it all stock, with a possible exception for mods that don't introduce or modify parts. Idea is to keep the save file accessible to everyone. I'm thinking that apart from some light hearted fun this can be a nice way for fellow youtubers to get some cross exposure going in a shared universe (ie. build a ship, make a video telling your viewers you're playing my game and I reference the builders channel when I fly the ship). That said, non-youtubers (I mean, lovely awesome viewers!) are more than welcome to play also. Share your craft on DropBox, pastebin or your service of choice, alternatively just email it to me at mail@donlorenzo.eu The persistence.sfs will be kept up to date under this link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/sewacnz5a3uwcc6/persistent.sfs I will update the file, not the link so if for some reason you want to keep older copies of the save, keep them yourself! The first episode is uploading as we speak, I hope some of you will play; I'm looking forward to your submissions! Cheers, DonLorenzo

Awesome! Glad you liked it. That link you posted goes to the main forum page btw, that's probably not the intention. Which is funny since in the quote window here it does show an imgur link. Oh well, must be black magic at work again

So, after taking pretty much all the advice given in this thread to heart(few pages back) I've bit the bullet, thrown down about $1500 and ordered my new machine. It'll have: i5 4670K Asus R9 290 4GB gpu 4x4GB RAM 500GB SSD 1TB HDD Asus Z87-A Mainboard Excited to get it now!

I made this video. It's about an hour and covers everything from launch, asteroid intercept and redirect. It's not strictly in the tutorial format, but I do explain what I do and why. And it's full stock.

What was your biggest payload you have launched into orbit?
DonLorenzo replied to TheScareCake!'s topic in KSP1 Discussion
About a 100-150 tons, but that's in RSS.. If I take that launch vehicle and put it on a lauchpad on Kerbin I reckon it'd do 1500-2500 tons to orbit. Would have to try that sometime This is still in .23 btw -
Unity 5 [Is now available]
DonLorenzo replied to NoMrBond's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
This is an engine that's up for pre-order. Even if squad makes the decision now to adopt, it will be a while before it materializes into a finished product I'd imagine -
Space is big; so, so big. The earth is just a tiny place in it. A nice, wonderful place, but probably not very special. With lots of effort and research and learning we might one day learn how to visit all these other places. When lots and lots of people worked together very very hard we even went to the moon one day, that was way cool, we really should do that again sometime. The universe and reality is a marvellous and weird place, and you're amongst the first (okay, second, maybe third) generation of people alive EVER that have the knowledge and resources available at your fingertips to understand it really rather well. Even though we're only small, that's not.

What kind of power does it produce? Thermal? Electric? and how much? That's quite important If it's about a MW I'd get a fancy electric car with a socket for it and drive that around forever, when at home i'd plug it into my house and refit all my appliance to be always on. Perpetually steaming jacuzzi, no more oven preheating, that kind of stuff. Oh and I'd have a tesla coil on the roof for lightning. One on my car as well come to think of it
