  1. So, i know what part clipping is and how to activate it, but i can't see the difference it makes during my rocket builds. From my experience, i can overlap most parts with part clipping deactivated. I just recently tried activating it, but i can't see the difference. What am i missing?

I can place as many rockets as i want stacked inside the other without part clipping acitaved, and i can place metal girders through fuel tanks and this, to me, feels like some serious clipping, so i wanted to know what passes for clipping in the forum challenges.

    Thank you.

  2. Playing Science mode on 0.90.0.705 32bit

running windows 8.1. 64 bit OS, if it matters.

Got my ship to Duna, was about to land on the northern on the edge of the snow. During my decent, I pull Bill Kerman out for some science. Since I had already crashed (the ship) a few times while doing this, I decided to quicksave while Bill is still outside the ship, to save time. Unfortunately, I couldn't save it this time around either. I press F9 to reload. Bill is outside the ship, everything is fine for about 2 seconds and then the ship just plain disappears. It doesn't crash, it just disappears. I reload the quicksave but the same thing happened every time. The ship is there at the beginning of the quicksave, but 2 seconds in it disappears. I can't even tab to it quick enough.

I ended up using Bills rock hard head to bounce him off the ground and keep him alive. Poor guy was stranded in the snowy region of a lifeless planet.

Following this anomaly, i went to hire more crew and it showed that Bob and Jeb were not missing or dead, but rather active on a mission. Anyway, I do another mission with new kerbals, and then finally Bob and Jeb magically reappear in my roster.

In the end, i took this bug as a story driving phenomenon. I ended up taking Bob and Jeb and using the same ship to land just a couple Km from Bill, and had Bob pick him up with my Duna Buggy. Starved and cold, Bill eventually did get home.

    Anyway, so there's that bug : )

  3. My brother started playing KSP recently and had, what i think, is a very nice idea. Cameras.

What HE meant was photographic cameras. I told him just to take screenshots, but what he meant was to have the ability to take a snapshot of a moon or planet to return to Kerbin for science, much like the photographs of the dark side of the moon in the Apollo missions. I guess you could argue that the "crew report" would sort of include photographic evidence from the Kerbal inside the ship, but i did like his idea, and it got me thinking.

What about if there were video cameras that can be added to the exterior of the ship? The idea here is that you can actually hit a hotkey and have a first person angle from the cameras, and the best part is you get to choose where they're placed. Think of it as switching to IVA, but instead to a live camera feed. This would allow you to get angles which are inaccessible to the current camera settings. Also, I'd think they would be pretty fun to use around an orbiting space station.

    Thoughts?

  4. i haven't tried career mode since the first time, which was when the career patch release came out. I was less experienced then and wasn't too thrilled about it. I played in favor of the more "Mercury/Gemini/Apollo missions" flavored science mode (back then, finance took a back seat to science). I'll give career mode another try, now that I'm more experienced. If science mode is 1960's NASA, then career mode is Space X. :D

  5. ok guys, i did it!

    Here's my ship:

    2weflo7.jpg

So this took me a few days to figure out.

Umbral, thanks for posting that video, that was very insightful.

I did some more research and found that actually many people landed on Duna and even further with Tier 0 parts. I never saw them because i never did a youtube search for "KSP Tier 0" before.

ANYWAY, i refrained myself from watching them at first, because I wanted to figure out how to build the rocket myself, but it was obvious that i needed to learn the various build techniques to keep this massive hunk of junk stable. I was managing to reach DUNA, but with not enough fuel for the return journey.

So this rocket is comprehensively 1/3

    , 1/3
    , 1/3
(their names are linked to the respective videos). So a big thanks to those guys for posting their videos which helped me reach the stars...or rather the planets...

I got back home with absolutely 0 fuel left, but I did waste a good 300+ Delta V when landing on Duna trying to find a flatter surface so, in a perfect voyage, you would be coming back with ample fuel to burn.

You'd think that 13 parachutes would safely slow down the ship, but Duna's atmosphere wouldn't let me get it under 8m/s without some rocket power. On Kerbin, however, it will slow down easily under 4m/s...problem is, i had to deploy them manually...oops.

I can't wait to race my friend and embarass his sorry butt!

I'd attach the ship-file, but i can't figure out how to add attachments on this forum.

  6. last night at 1AM was technically today, so, TODAY i landed on Duna and returned a kerbal home for the first time! I've gotten there before, i just never gotten anybody home from there. I learned that I always overthink my rockets. I got there with a rather simple design this time.

  7. hi guys.

    I recently watched

. I replicated his ship and managed to complete the same journey: land on minmus and return home on the first mission. So I was curious to know just how far can you get using the basic parts provided at the start of career/science mode? Has anybody tried to get to Duna and back on the first launch?

I've gotten to Duna using basic parts plus radial and stack decouplers (no fuel lines, no struts, no big rockets), which i unlocked doing a quick crew and eva report from the launchpad and runways, so technically it was not my first launch.

I don't have the know-how to do it without those decouplers. I'm sure it's possible though.

Any of you rocket scientists wanna give a whack at this?

My friend and I like to do Science mode Duna races (first to plant a flag and return wins), and I want to make him feel really bad about himself...because that's what friends are for! :)

  8. OOPS! MY BAD! I didn't realize this problem was already reported. I just saw the stickied thread. Reading it now.

From what i'm reading however, it doesn't relate to my situation, as this is not a career mode save with contracts, but a science mode save. I have "respawn crewmembers" check on, but "auto hire crewmembers" checked off. Nevertheless, i tried the solution listed in that thread, with no success.

Just experienced a nasty bug. This is actually the first time i experience a bug in the few years i've been playing KSP (unless you count flipping your manned rover over, hit your kerbals head on the ground, falling out of the vehicle, stand up but not able to move a bug...i figure he just got brain damage :P).

    1) I was constructing a vessel in science mode. I had to duplicate a rocket. I alt-click it to copy it. I have the duplicate rocket on my mouse tab, however the game will not let me attach it. It will not even let me release it. While clicking around, i accidentally click one of the stage tabs, and now that's stuck on my mouse cursor. It will not release that either. I try clicking the exit button, but it doesn't work. It gets highlighted and makes the clicking sound when pressed, but doesn't lead me to the main screen. The same thing with the launch button. I bring up the exit screen with ESC but it won't it's the same story. I can select settings, i can resume game, but i can't exit the screen i am currently in. I alt tab and shut down KSP.

    2) I restart it and reload my game. Everything works find now. I go to launch the vessel, but i forgot to arrange my stages and the rocket explodes on the launch pad. My crewman survives, so i click recover vessel. It doesn't work. I click ESC and try to exit that way, but that doesn't work either. I manage to get my Kerbal out with the EVA icon and try to recover him that way but, again, it doesn't work. Once again, i have to alt tab, task manager, and shut it down.

    3) I open the game again, tab out, start writing this report, tab back in, load my game and click on the rocket assembly facility. I see it being highlighted and it makes the clicking sound, but it won't enter it. I click the other buildings, same storry. I try double clicking. This time it works while clicking on the science facility. Now i'm in the science facility page. I can click on the tech tree icons and it will show me the unlockables, but when i click on the exit tab or the archives tab, same story as before. Once again, ESC key opens but i can't exit. However the settings and resume game keys work. Once more, task manager, shut down game. And here i am.

This has not happened to me before, not in this patch, not in prior patches. This happened just today. I've had this science game going for about 10 in game years (human calendar, not kerbal), and started it about a week or 2 ago. It had not given me any problems until now.

I love ksp, i do, but i really don't think the next update should be 1.0 even if following patches will in fact add updates like multiplayer and such.

It's not just about content, but feature quality. For example the trajectory planning node, though easy to use, is a bit annoying when you click away from it and it shrinks back to that little flower icon, sometimes making it hard to click on it when your ship is surrounded by other orbiting objects. Sure, you can temporarily untrack some of those other things, but it's one of the small things in a game that brings down its overall quality. In short, this just doesn't feel like a completed game you'd buy off a shelf.

    UPDATE:

It looks like my save is permanently broken. I can't do anything with it anymore. New careers and sandbox mode work just fine, but i can't even enter any of the facilities other than the science facility in my saved game. :( Bummer. It was the first time i found asteroids and captured one.

I also didn't realize until i read other reports on the forum, but i had the bug that didn't respawn my crewmembers. It just put them in the MIA tab. When creating the game, i selected to have crewmembers respawn. I noticed this before the game broke itself, but i thought it was something i was doing wrong.
