Mad Rocket Scientist replied to Skylon's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I agree that SpaceX's mars program currently looks like the best bet, but I do want to defend SLS's potential, if not likely, use for Mars missions. That is, that there is nothing inherently wrong with the design from an technical standpoint. While it currently seems unlikely that SLS will be able to fly enough, if it flies at all before it gets cancelled, I believe it has the technological potential to fly a Mars mission. With enough political will, and thus money, I think a manned Mars landing could be accomplished with SLS or a similar conservative Saturn V like design. It would likely cost the same as or more than the entire development cost of reusable heavy launch vehicles to just fly the mission and make all the legacy designs work together, but I would defend that cost as more than worthwhile. It would require a redesign of the SLS program, but not the design of an entirely new rocket. You would have to start planning around much more frequent flights, and start building components on a much larger scale, but the components themselves would require little to no changes. The SLS has no technological reasons to prevent it from flying Mars missions, only political ones. -

I have a bit of an odd question: What is recommended for a smartphone? I don't care about camera quality, weight, thinness, screen size, audio quality, or any of the "luxury" features in a lot of phones. *cough*apple*cough* I do care about durability, repairibility, privacy, having decent support from custom ROMs or kernels, and to a lesser degree, battery life. Processing power isn't super important, only enough to ensure that it doesn't bog down on google maps or the like in the next 5 or so years. For budget, I probably would like to spend around $400 USD or less, although my budget is fairly flexible. I'm happy with Lenovo laptops, but it seems that they only make one phone, that hasn't gotten amazing reviews: https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/smart-devices/-lenovo-smartphones/phab-series/c/phab-series I also ran into the fairphone, which is designed to be extremely easy to repair (every part can be removed and replaced with a screwdriver) and is recommended by ubuntu touch. However, it costs nearly $600 USD and while appreciate the thought of reducing the impact of making a smartphone, it doesn't seem like there are a lot of concrete differences in the actual sources of the hardware. It also uses a version of android that is two versions out of date. EDIT: Fairphone has an open bootloader, and custom OS's don't void the warranty. I forgot to mention, I'd also like to be able to replace the battery fairly easily. -

It's hard to believe, but it seems like the tunnel might actually open on time. -

A bit after 12:00 PST, if there's no issues with the cubesats. Picture is here! -

There's a lot of gravity losses though, since the burn is about 25 seconds long, which is an entire 92.5 m/s extra from gravity. -

I feel like you would want to see what happened in VI after watching V. I think the prequels are optional for the story of the original trilogy. Honestly, if you watch just one movie make it IV. It is a near-perfect telling of the hero's journey story, and none of the other movies can improve that with backstory or greater context. I also think the sequels are pretty good movies as well, and I think you could watch them without watching the prequels.

Maybe the entire vehicle will be a COPV. EDIT: Or maybe they're moving away from sideways reentry. -
For Questions That Don't Merit Their Own Thread
Mad Rocket Scientist replied to Skyler4856's topic in Science & Spaceflight
It kind of depends on the style of the drawing. You can definitely reduce size by reducing the color depth, but that might be a problem if there are lots of colors being used. In that case, you could use fill tools to replace the paper with a singe color, as well as completely black lines. I'm not 100% sure, but I think this would decrease the size. If by the "drawing zones" you mean the size of the entire page, then you will have to reduce the resolution to 163x243 anyway, and that should significantly reduce the size of the file. -

Looks like no go on the clustered F9's. -
Does the plane side of Boeing affect NASA's opinion of their space side? And does the investigation cover all of Boeing or just the commercial crew stuff? For that matter, does the investigation cover all of SpaceX? If this is a safety culture investigation, it seems like you would have to investigate the entire company, but NASA doesn't really have any stake in what these companies are doing other than commercial crew stuff.

I think that the most interesting thing is that Boeing is being investigated as well as SpaceX. EDIT: just saw this: Personally, I think that this may actually be better in the long run for SpaceX. It is probably a nuisance, and the negative press isn't great, but I think that if there is one area where SpaceX is not great, it's safety. Safety vs. speed and innovation is probably a trade-off, and so I suspect that their safety culture is not as good, in some ways, as NASA's. And it is definitely better for SpaceX to discover problems on the ground.

Thread to complain bout stuff

It is not true that no one cares, and a doctor will tell you to worry about things if they are dangerous. I can't judge how bad it really is, since I'm not a doctor and don't know important details about your health, but any doctor or nurse will not just tell you to ignore what you described feeling. A teacher or other authority at a school will not ignore a student that says that they feel the way you described. If it is at all possible, I would go directly to a doctor or nurse and describe what happened to you, and whether it has happened before. I would also try to talk to a teacher or other authority at the school. If that is not an option, then I would continue to try to explain to your parents how you feel. I'm sorry that that's the best advice I can give.
