Custom Textures in 1.0
thatBeatsguy replied to thatBeatsguy's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Oh. Well, at least this time it's much much easier now (no need to deal with hex editors and such). Thanks a lot! -
Hey guys, So I've been lately creating some super-rovers, but found the measly 22 m/s top speeds hardly super-rover material. So I thought I'd make a distinction between the regular wheels and the new ones by making a new wheel, but I have no idea how to edit the textures as the new 1.0 system uses .dds files to store the textures. So far the tutorials for changing these only apply to much older versions of KSP, which used different filetypes to store the textures. Any help on how to edit textures with the new system? ~ thatBeatsguy

Alright, I'm looking forward to your creation! RULES UPDATE I've changed the size classes to accommodate tiny karts (as requested by Slam_Jones). That class will be called the Tiny Class, and will have its own leaderboard as well. Still thinking of an easy way to make a proper small course (with starting point for easy timekeeping). But yeah, Tiny class is now open!

Oh wow, so many replies! Okay, let me reply to the questions first. Hmm, yeah, lately I've been experiemnting with light-class rovers lately, and I've been thinking of using a smaller racetrack for that very purpose. I'm not really sure about mandating Tweakscale on that one (for that I could probably tweakscale my Endeavour 3 for use on the smaller track...). But yeah, give me some time, and I'll get back to you on that one. Too busy prepping a D&D campaign with my friends. Thanks for the entry! Boostless and Style award for you! You've got one swanky go-kart there, Slam_Jones! Hey Josh, thanks for the entry! Blowout, Boostless, and Purist award for you! (Oh yeah, you might need to fix the gallery link; it doesn't seem to work on my end.) Hey Kaboom, thanks for the entry! Purist and Boostless awards for you! (Note: All times will be posted to the scoreboards in a couple minutes.) Thanks, everyone! Lots of great runs out there!

Hmm, as the stock part revamp doesn't seem to change any fuel attributes too much, I think it's okay. The "safemods" thing is pretty loose and I'm open to a lot of mods, so as they don't affect the boost systems and the wheels' impact tolerance attributes. I think I might try this mod myself. As for the image, I'll try to get that working. Here's an Imgur link which I uploaded a few minutes ago. I'll update the OP with the new link: http://i.imgur.com/n8xaoYU.png

I just found this Introduction thread, so I thought I'd introduce myself since i'm new here. So hi, my name is thatBeatsguy. I've been playing Kerbal Space Program since around 0.23.5, so I came in pretty late to the party. It's been a wild ride, though, and I haven't stopped playing the game since I got it. So yeah, that's about it. God, I'm so bad at this.

So, I’ve seen stuff like the Dukes of Duna 4K Speedrun Challenge, but I haven’t really seen any challenge which factors in actual rover driving skill (turning, braking, etc.). So, I decided to make my own. Hoping my laziness didn’t overlook an already-existing KSC rover building/driving challenge (I managed to look back about 5 pages before giving up), I present to you KerbPro Track Day! I'm looking for some of the best Kerbal rover designers to build and race their rovers around the KSC in the shortest time possible. Objective Build a rover and drive one lap around the KSC in the shortest time possible. The Track The track is marked in the above picture. We’ll be driving around most of the perimeter of the KSC, only excluding the Administration Centre. You have no save to download which features checkpoints of any sort – just follow the road. The Rovers The rovers are split into four classes: Tiny, Light, Medium, and Heavy. The Tiny class must be no bigger than 1.5/1.5/1.5m (L/W/H) and be no heavier than 3t. The Light class must be no bigger than 3.0/3.0/3.0m and be no heavier than 5t. The Medium class must be no bigger than 5.0/5.0/3.0m and be no heavier than 10t. The Heavy class must be no bigger than 10/10/6.0m and be no heavier than 20t (I want you guys to get creative ). Any larger and I might have to make a HUGE rover class. I can only imagine how one can drive it around the KSC with a good lap time… Since there are three classes, of course, there will be three separate leaderboards so as to keep things fair. The leaderboards are listed at the bottom of the page. Building Requirements 1) Despite what the title says, KerbPro (rather, the Hullcam VDS mod) isn’t necessary to enter the challenge. I just thought it’d be cool to throw in the name as a sponsor brand or something. 2) Manned/unmanned rovers don’t really make a difference as far as KSP physics is concerned. Just get them within the size limits. 3) The rover must still work after the run. It has to still be driveable, even if what’s left of it is half of its body and 2 wheels. 4) The rover must have wheels. 5) Boost is allowed, of course, but the rover must still be able to run without boost power. > Addendum: Whatever propulsion method you use (F/O, MonoProp, Ion) doesn't matter. 6) Mod parts can be used for your rover (list of confirmed “safe†mods below). I’d really like to see variety in the competition, like rovers using Kerbal Foundries wheels, etc. 7) FAR/NEAR is allowed; just don’t forget to mention it when you submit your time. > TweakScale (can’t think of any way to cheat the fuel or the wheels with this mod, so it’s safe) > Hullcam VDS (I use this personally for recording purposes. Also not a cheat mod from my set rules.) > Snacks! And Whyren’s Snack Parts (these mods don’t affect anything, but I just thought I’d get that out of the way) > B9 Aerospace, Kerbal Foundries, and other parts pack mods > Stock Parts Revamp > Pretty much anything that doesn't mess with fuel or crash tolerance configs Building Limitations 1) Mods like MechJeb, HyperEdit, and Debug Toolbar are not allowed. 2) Modifying part configs are also not allowed. 3) Part altering mods are also not allowed. Keeping Score Keeping score of the rovers will use the basic mission timer at the top-left of your game screen. Keep track of the time you start driving, and when you come back to/pass the same spot. Subtract the time between the two, and you have your lap time. It is recommended to plant a flag beforehand as a start/finish line. You do not have to stop at the finish line; as long as you can keep the time you passed there, you’re good to go. An easier way to keep score is to attach a launch clamp to your rover. The mission clock won’t move until you decouple from the clamp and start moving. The clamp pillar will also serve as a start/finish line for convenience. Submitting Your Score Include at least three pictures: > 1 at the starting line > 1 somewhere in between > 1 as you pass the finish line Also include a short description of your rover, its features, et cetera. Do share extra pictures of your rover, or maybe even a craft file of the rover, although it’s obviously not required. I’d also love to see a YouTube video of your run, if you recorded one! Miscellaneous Awards > Style Award: There’s no winning better than winning and looking good while you’re at it. > Wacky Award: Kerbal designs have always been known to be crazy. So go crazy! Go Kerbal! > Purist Award: You completed your run with an all-stock rover. > Boostless Award: You completed your run with no boost system. > Survivor Award: You finished the race by the skin of your teeth…and a driveable fraction of your rover. > Blowout Award: Blowout your wheels at some point during the race. If you actually make it past the finish line, that’s a bonus Survivor award for you as well! (I’ll probably add some more awards here, but can’t think of any beyond this right now. Let me know if you have a cool award idea!) If you have any questions, please let me know via PM or on this thread. Now, may the best man win! My Run UPDATED: So, a video of my run is up: My time on that run is about 5:01 -- about the average I did over 3 runs. The rover I used is the Hexxagon Endeavour 3.0 (I posted a description on the Rover MegaThread here) UPDATE 2: Apparently I just recently realized my rover is supposed to be a medium class. Silly me.
