Are there extra points for taking back off from the water?

This generally tends to be the best way of going about it in my opinion, the simplest designs I've utilized consisted of 2 MK1 Pods attached to each other, chuted & lifted by a small rocket to rendezvous within ~2km of the poor soul you're trying to rescue (closer if you can!). Then it's a simple matter of switching, enabling the RCS Pack and jumping on board by grabbing the ladder with "F" when close!

I had a huge amount of satellites in orbit of every body in Kerbin's sphere of influence (20-25) and never really experienced any game-changing issues, only the bad taste in my mouth for not being able to squeeze every little bit of use that I could for the funds, I think it's a matter of preference, if you prefer clean, delete them, if you want to remember the good times, keep them!
