Trying to orbit the Mun
JackBush replied to JackBush's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Happy to report that I finally am orbiting the Mun. Am very excited, but the best my wife could come up with was the typical "That's nice for you, dear." So I had to tell someone who would appreciate it. Now on to gather science. Thanks to everyone who gave advice and help. This forum has a terrific group of people willing to help newbies. We appreciate it. -
Why do my decouplers blow up?

Where is the readout you speak of? -

This sounds interesting and valuable. How do I do that? - - - Updated - - - This is all great stuff, folks. Thanks so much. I'll be back to let you know how I make out. -
Trying to orbit the Mun
JackBush replied to JackBush's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I think I've done what you suggested. At least there's a Mun periapsis in it. What do you think? http://imgur.com/oufEnkO And now what? Burn? -
Trying to orbit the Mun

I appreciate the answers but am still not there. Here's a screenshot of what I have so far. What's good or what's bad and what should I be doing with it? http://imgur.com/rd9JZzi Sorry, still not seeing the editor button that lets me automatically put around it. -
Trying to orbit the Mun
JackBush replied to JackBush's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Thanks Monsterlunch. But I don't know what makes the one picture Good and the other one Bad. I can create the Bad one easily but don't know where to take it from there or how. -
I have a beautiful circular orbit around Kerbin. My ship should have enough fuel left to get me to the Mun. But my problem is I have no idea what any of the explanations of how-to-get-into-Mun's-orbit are telling me. I've seen Scott Manley's but he loses me at some point. So I've come back to the in-game tut. But I'm not understanding this explanation: Pick any spot on your orbit and set a maneuver. (Fine.) With handles showing, pull the Prograde handle until your theoretical orbit intersects that of the Mun. (Fine.) It has to be an interjectory trajectory to the Mun however, (not fine.) so move the node itself as necessary (how do I do that?) to get one. I've moved every handle every which way and created all kinds of messes, but none of them is right. I can tell this because I'm not able to click "Continue" to move to the next stage in the tutorial. The professor is not happy, but I don't know why.

Why do my decouplers blow up?
JackBush replied to JackBush's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Well, I've fiddled and fiddled with them, moving the decouplers up and down; I don't know how to tell when the boosters are positioned properly beyond when they shine green. I must be missing something. Here's a screen of the ship on the pad. http://imgur.com/BHHqC6h There's another question: why don't my Imgur images show up? -
I was able to move up a level in the tech tree so I've been trying to add 3 BACC "Thumper" solid fuel boosters to my already successful ship. But my "old" TT-38K radial decouplers now just blow up on blast-off. The Boosters don't get blown off but keep powering the ship upwards. But then I'm stuck with them the whole trip. Are my decouplers simply inadequate? Question 2: where do you place the Inline Reaction wheel? Above or below the engine? Thanks in advance.

Why do I see "Est burn: N/A" when I quickload?
JackBush replied to JackBush's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Thanks for the answers, guys. The quick-burn idea seems useful. Or I could pause the first time and write down the est. burn time. Didn't think of that until after I'd posted. The quick-burn seems better, though. Thanks again. I couldn't play this game without the vast experience and knowledge of so many on this forum. -
To save myself launching over and over again, I would like to quicksave just before setting a maneuver. But after I've blown it and use quickload, the rather important "estimated burn" message reads "N/A"? Does this happen to you, and what can I do about it? I'm still learning to get into orbit and don't want the tedious launch business if I can avoid it.

Changing the camera in Map view
JackBush replied to JackBush's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Thanks. That's good to hear that it's requested so heavily. Where do I sign up to request it? -
In map view looking at Kerbin (to set a maneuver or whatever) I find moving around very awkward. Is there a way to unlock the camera so that it can move freely. When you're going to set a maneuver, time is precious and fumbling around trying to get a proper view of the Apoapsis, etc, is difficult. Anything?

Where do I go from here?
JackBush replied to JackBush's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Thanks, guys. Clipperide, when you say EVA do you mean having the Kerbal do more than just hanging on, as in moving away from the ship? Sounds like you do when you say to do a quicksave. -
I'm playing on Science and would like to keep on that path. I've just picked up some nice science points and now have 90+ to spend. Here's where I am on the tech tree: http://imgur.com/uSYmPes But do I then have enough to get to Mun and back? Or should I repeat the science experiments? I look forward to your thoughts.

Best way to get out of orbit and back to Kerbin
JackBush replied to JackBush's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Yes, I have a parachute on the capsule. No, it doesn't burn up during re-entry. But I'm trying to wait until the capsule gets below the 5000 level to deploy the chute safely. But I have no idea how high the ground level is. I was simply too late the last time and it crashed at about 1200. In previous attempts, the chute has been burned up by the "aero speed" (Is that right? I'm trying to remember the message I get.) while still in flight. -
I have poor old Bob Kerman orbiting and can't get him back safely. (It's mostly the valuable science points he's collected that I want.) Every time we come down, we do so over land which kills him and the ship. How do I "point" the ship to end up in the ocean (which presumably will be safe)? (For those following my tribulations on another thread, I'm getting pretty good at the orbiting business. Somewhere along the line, however, I discovered that Jebediah had been KIA, which I take to mean "killed in action". If it doesn't, I have no idea where he is!)

Still struggling to get into orbit ...
JackBush replied to JackBush's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Made it! http://imgur.com/YF7lzJ6 As you can see it's not completely circular. I got the impression from one video that you can adjust the orbit to make it circular--or anything you want, I guess. If so, how? And finally, thanks for all your help and advice. Now I have to go practice doing it some more. -
Still struggling to get into orbit ...
JackBush replied to JackBush's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I've spent most of the day launching and actually getting up there. No problems with fuel any more. It's the tricky bit of getting into orbit. There's something about my burn timing and I feel I'm so close but the thing just won't connect. Apoasis is good and I'm making pretty good circles around Kerbin. It's just something in that countdown and burn. Just for fun, here's what I did to poor old Bill Kernan in the last one. (I have no idea how!) Link is http://imgur.com/fsV6ddF By the way, I am uploading screens to Imgur and inserting the URL but that's what happens. -
Still struggling to get into orbit ...

Thanks Friend Bear. No i don't have sepatrons (haven't even heard of them yet). I'll try fixing the solid boosters more carefully this time. -

This looks good, Hugs. How do you attach the solid boosters so you can get rid of them (without wrecking the rest of the stage)?
