Hah, no, nothing so nice. I cheated a bit. I cobbled together a 'plane' from stock parts and changed one of the engines to use no fuel. I stuck a mechjeb module on to act as an autopilot using the surface mode. 11 degrees of pitch gave me -1m/s vertical speed so just flipping between 11 and 12 degrees every few minutes gave nice level flight.

I spent about 30 minutes flying about around 10km up. I found this launch site hidden away in a mountain range.

I\'ll bite. This rocket was designed to see how much I could land on the Mun using only stock parts. I ended up being able to land a rocket with 12-14 tanks on the Mun, probably enough to reach escape velocity! Here was my attempt: http://imgur.com/a/GMsoz It went (mostly) well, I reached a final escape velocity of 16.3 km/s. The one hicup was my choice of landing location on the Mun. Apparently a large mountain range is not an ideal landing spot. I did a quick touch and go landing (breaking off a \'landing leg\' in the process) but the ship IS capable of touching down as seen here: I\'m sure I could have flown it more efficiently but I figured I had more than enough fuel to just point it in one direction and floor the throttle for most of it.
