There's two basic camps. Having a setting you can turn on or off satisfies both sides. That's all I meant.

i need some silly stuff to do
shadragon replied to EnderBOSS555009's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Get to, land on, and return from, the Mun with a manned mission. The catch? You can only use the parts from the first three R&D levels: - Start Basic Fin Mk1 Command Pod RT-5 "Flea" Solid Fuel Booster Mystery Goo™ Containment Unit Modular Girder Segment Mk16 Parachute - Basic Rocketry LV-T45 "Swivel" Liquid Fuel Engine RT-10 "Hammer" Solid Fuel Booster FL-T100 Fuel Tank - Engineering 101 SC-9001 Science Jr. Communotron 16 TR-18A Stack Decoupler PS. I plan on challenging myself with this once I get the entire R&D tree. -
Just make it an option in settings, turned off by default. Beginners can leave stranded Kerbals in orbit until they can figure out a rescue plan, while the ones who want the extra pressure (pun intended) can flip the switch and have limited life support. I also don't want to have to explain to my young daughter why Valentina isn't moving anymore. We've already been through that with a sick pet.

One thing I'd like to see is a stand alone version of the VAB and SPH so we can fiddle with ship designs outside of the main game. When I'm at work, I'm often patching servers late into the evening or away at remote sites doing maintenance. The patch installs can take literally hours and having the ability to work on ship designs as updates are grinding away in the background would be great. I can't install the full game on my work laptop for obvious reasons, but a stand alone (and maybe freeware) version of the SPH and VAB would let me work on my designs when I'm otherwise unoccupied watching a progress bar. You'd need the main game to fly them, of course, but just being able to manipulate a new rover design or sort out staging on a heavy lift vehicle would be great. I could sync the designs to my home account through Dropbox as well.

Mastering the Korolev Cross
shadragon replied to shadragon's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I don't have the sepatrons yet, but am advancing fairly quickly. Still mastering getting into orbit. Well, when I say mastering, I haven't accomplished it yet. (Curse you Scott Manley for making it look so damned easy in your videos!!!) @String Witch Tried pairs of offset fins just below the nose cones of the SRB's, tilted away from the main body. No effect. Still collided underneath my vehicle. @Snark Also tried decouplers as you suggested, but on stage separation, the SRB's stayed put attached to the central SRB. I think I may have screwed up the placement, but when I remounted them a second time in VAB, the snap-to looks to have placed the SRB's directly against the inner SRB and not the decoupler. Not sure if that is a bug, or lack of finesse on my part. Will work on it. -

Looks way better than anything I have in orbit, which is nothing. Inspirational work @Corona688 -
Problem with liquid Engines

@700NitroXpress Felt really dumb when I realized this is exactly what I had done. Using aviation fuel on a rocket. DOH! Cheers for that. -
Mastering the Korolev Cross
shadragon replied to shadragon's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
@FullMetalMachinist I did try a single higher up, but not the offset. Will give that a go tonight. @String Witch I thought of that too, but felt it would cause unnecessary drag. I'm going to play around with various combos this evening. Thanks. -
Mastering the Korolev Cross

Looks like the answer, but takes 1100 to unlock. That'll be a while. http://wiki.kerbalspaceprogram.com/wiki/Sepratron_I -
My heavy lift orbital rocket has four SRB's at the base of a larger SRB in the center. When the four SRB's burn out, I jettison them and they usually collide below my vehicle. 2 chances in 5 they'll damage something on the rest of the ship. I've tried TT-38K Radial Decouplers singly and in pairs. but nothing I do lets them peel away smoothly. I know there's a mod to do this, but can it be done stock? I'm early career so there may be a part coming up soon, but right now I can't see a way to jettison the SRB's so they fall clear safely. Any tips?

SAS Turns Off With Each Stage Seperation?
shadragon replied to shadragon's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
OK, so... Wiki - "The root part is the first part placed in the VAB or SPH so it's on the top of the dependency tree." SAS Wiki Page - "The PID control is applied to the vessel's rotational velocity at the command point. This means that large rockets that tend to wobble out of control during flight do so because the SAS sees the tip (where the command module usually is) rotating and assumes the entire vessel is spinning this fast. For this reason, "wobble" can be largely eliminated by controlling the vessel as close to the CG as possible. This can be accomplished by placing a command module or docking port in the middle of the rocket. Right click the unit and select "Control From Here" to change the control point. If you end up controlling the "dead" end of the rocket after stage separation, simply press the "[" or "]" keys to select the appropriate section." From the above, I take it that the control point is the command pod and the root part is stage #1. Your solution is to reroot to the control point you want, but I only have one. Does reselecting my command pod fix this? Cheers. -
Thanks for this. The auto-fix program solved my Shadowplay issues and I can record now. Most appreciated.

Here's a ship. Second and third stages trip SAS off. http://kerbalx.com/shadragon/Science-Mk-I.craft -
SAS Turns Off With Each Stage Seperation?
shadragon replied to shadragon's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
SAS is set to T. I don't think I've changed any hotkeys from default. No action groups set by me. This happened on multiple builds, but I'm sure to make some from scratch. Will include any build save games I have issues with. -

SAS Turns Off With Each Stage Seperation?
shadragon replied to shadragon's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I'm still doing early career mode. Simple two stage sub-orbital rockets with a MK I pod, thermometer, science jr., mystery goo and that's about it. PS. Just looked up probe cores. No, I'm not doing those yet. -
SAS Turns Off With Each Stage Seperation?
shadragon replied to shadragon's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Yes, SAS, sorry. I amended the original question. No mods and brand new install. -
Had a few maneuvering issues until I figured out SAS stabilization. (I'm in early stages of career mode and have no RCS yet) However, SAS when on, seems to turn off every time I decouple a stage, which has resulted in some rather deep craters near the launch center. I'm getting around this by re-engaging SAS with each separation, but I still forget on occasion and either lose control or have the craft go off course enough to have to reset back to the pad. Am I missing something obvious in settings to keep this on? Suggestions welcome.

Sorry Sal, but there is a pilot available (two actually, Jebidiah and Valentina in accommodation listed as "Available") who appear in the cockpit when I restart the game. The program hangs before the crew loading process on the launch screen. As stated, previously I began a brand new game and the first launch hung. The text is from NVIDIA Shadowplay. I have turned it off and had the same thing occur. I've got thirty years of IT management experience. I tried all the basics before composing this. Would you like me to do a video showing the issue?

KSP Version: PC - Steam 64 bit, build id = 01289 2016.06.21 at 20:49:32 CEST Branch: master What Happens: I construct a ship in VAB (I've made a half dozen different craft from new - Career mode) then hit launch. About 70% of the time the launch screen appears, but with issues. There is no Kerbal crew image in the lower right corner, no controls are active (if I press T for SAS or throttle up / down buttons nothing happens, for example) and the STAGE light, instead of blinking green is a solid light purple color. I can rotate the camera and select components on screen as well as change staging order, but little else. Screenshot enclosed. Added later: I did notice that when the screen loads properly, there is a brief pause where the screen looks like my screenshot before loading in the missing elements. I also started a new game last night and this bug happened on the first launch. Mods / Add-Ons: None. New purchase & virgin install (via Steam) five days ago. No mods. Hardware: AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz / 32 GB Ram / OCX PCIe SSD 256GB + RAID 1 3TB SATA HD / MSI GTX 980Ti 6G Gaming / ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z ROG / HTC Vive / Steam VR Rating: 12510 (I do not use VR for KSP, but it's a pretty solid gaming computer.) Running KSP at 1920 x 1080 most graphics settings maxed @ 60FPS. DXDiag attached. Steps to Replicate: I just hit launch. Roughly 70% of the time, it hangs up the launch screen as shown in screenshot. Result: Cannot launch. Must back out and reload game from main menu. If I do that, it usually works. Fixes/Workarounds: Quit to main menu and reload game. Works after that, for a time. Other Notes/Pictures/Log Files: Enclosed in Zip file here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/pjr1nq4urvk4tu2/KSP_Bug.zip - buildID64.txt - DXDiag.txt - Screenshot - Output_log.txt

Escape Velocites and Orbital Heights
shadragon replied to shadragon's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Hey Guys, It's a Work in progress. If I need to add altitude parameters, point me in the way of the formulas and I'll include it. I was surprised to get such a close correlation between my initial calcs and the Wiki. The end goal is to have a reference sheet for quick info look-ups. As stated, I'm approaching this with wide eyed optimism so if I screw up or don't take something into account, do tell me. My experience in orbital mechanics is about five days old at the moment. Cheers. -
Morning, thanks for the answers. Can't give a specific example. My home Internet has been down for a few days since a clapper of a thunderstorm and the cable guys are backed up. I'm using my work connection for this with no KSP loaded for reference. I haven't taken any of those tourist missions as I'm unsure of where the destination is. I've already taken a couple of missions which look simple, but are very hard to do with the basic loadouts and didn't want to get stuck again. As long as a way point shows on the map upon acceptance, then life if good. Cheers.
-
I see mission control assignments like "Take two passengers to X" but I don't see any locations, lat or long for the destination. Is there a reference map somewhere showing where I need to go? Cheers.

Escape Velocites and Orbital Heights
shadragon replied to shadragon's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Mhoram & OhioBob, I took your responses (THANKS!) and turned them into a spreadsheet for orbital and escape velocities of each major body in the game. Should be self-explanatory. "(My calc)" columns are ones I calculated from the data provided and the "(Wiki)" column is copied from the Wiki to validate the calculations accuracy. If you don't want to download my copy of the spreadsheet, for whatever reason, you should be able to recreate this pretty quickly. I hope this is of use to someone. Next project is to add a delta v table from each body to all others. Tips on how to proceed welcome. Screenshot of spreadsheet here: Excel 2010 file download here (xlsx): https://www.mediafire.com/?g2246rxpjm8epj2 Note: While I have scanned this Excel file with decent anti-virus and anti-malware software to ensure it is clean, downloading third party files from the Internet is always problematic. Please keep this in mind and vet any downloads with your own scanning software before opening them.
