I forgot to deploy the solar panels on a probe... It wasn't fun
-
I am landing, as a matter of fact, the portion with the ISRU is the lander, and the portion with the lab is the orbiter; I'm doing it Apollo-Style, so the Mun? For me, the Mun is still mysterious, since my only trip to it was just a touch-down-on-the-Mun-and-go-home mission, and all I got back from it was an EVA Report and a surface sample. So what's the verdict?
-
It sounds too risky, besides, it wasn't even designed for that kind of mission, so which moon do you suggest?
-
It's 74.76 Tons, uses skippers and has 1,614 Units of fuel excluding the lander module, that's all I got for stats
-
Is it Duna-Capable though? Yes, it has an ISRU, but the second skipper stage is half empty/full
-
^This is my new station thingy that was originally designed to go to the Mun or Minmus, but I'm not sure which moon to go to with this thing. Any suggestions?

Do you think this is Duna-capable? -

I'm sorry, what do these numbers mean? -
Manned, career Duna round trip

I just heard about this thing called "asparagus staging", and it seems to work like a charm! I'll attempt this mission again, except I'll use staging that makes your pee smell weird, since I'm pretty sure I could have gotten away with that big stage you see to the far left being completely full in LKO if only I used asparagus stagingn -
Manned, career Duna round trip

FYI, The big stage with the skipper is nearly empty, so I hardly skimmed Duna's atmosphere before running out of fuel -
Manned, career Duna round trip

Well, I can get to Duna just fine, but what I meant to say was that it would be a one-way trip, pretty much kissing Jeb, Bill, Danuki (my go-to guys for any mission; Bob and Valentina both died in a space station catastrophe) and all of their science goodbye, for good. I'm also pretty bad with interplanetary encounters when it comes to efficiency, so I prefer to bring along a lot of spare fuel just in case, so I really don't get very concerned about efficiency, that is, if a round trip wasn't what I was planning, thanks for the advice anyway!, though -
Manned, career Duna round trip

I did it exactly how I thought it would work: I would send up two ships to be docked Apollo-Style in LKO, and simply head of to Duna I can't begin to tell you how proud I was of this tiny station, but I grossly underestimated the amount of fuel required to get to Duna, and note how the big stage is nearly empty, so the ship turned out to be hardly Minmus-capable. Long story short, I just completely gave up on it and reloaded another quicksave. Can anyone post a screenshot of a minimal, Manned, and Duna-round-trip-capable rocket just so I can get an idea of how much fuel I need? Because ^this thing obviously didn't make the cut. I almost always overestimate the amount of fuel required to get somewhere — even if it's by a little bit — but never have I underestimated fuel the requirements of a specific mission EDIT: I see what you mean, but I don't have the patience nor time to experiment for hours on end, sorry if that came off as rude -
The title says it all, but I do have a few questions about manned Duna return missions: 1.) Should I do it Apollo style, leaving one guy in orbit with a crap ton of fuel and loading the other side onto a lander? 2.) I'm not good with docking, nor can I get mods, so can I do this in one launch? 3.) Should I bring an ISRU converter along with me? If so, where should I have it (in the lander or in the orbiter)? Thanks in advance!
-
I have been asking the same question, but I guess the most practical option is to assemble the vehicle in LKO (e.g. The tug, the lander, the crew and the lab all added to the vehicle in separate launches and dockings). I want to be able to do this in a single launch, however, and I'm assuming that's also what you're here for

So lately I've been sending rovers to all sorts of places around the solar system. All the way from the densely packed system of Jool, and to the red planet along with it's (somewhat pesky) moon (that is always giving me unwanted assists and collision courses). Every time is the same problem though: the landing is always either on a steep slope or my descent vehicle design is so bad, pulling off a landing with the rover being upright and (somewhat) intact is nothing short of a crazy party trick. With all this being said, along what lines should I build my descent vechicle, without it becoming another one of those sandbox monstrosities?

Duna vs Ike Rover?

I'll go for Duna then, thanks! -
Duna vs Ike Rover?
Squidiness replied to Squidiness's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Thanks! Fuel consumption likely won't be a problem, since I'm not going to be taking off again, though I did bring chutes along for a Duna descent. But faster speed to other biomes doesn't nessarily mean more science, does it? I guess the question now is which has more biomes. Edit: Which one would you visit if you were found in the scenario? -
I sent a rover to the Duna system for the first time, and it may be on a collision course with Ike... But it's cool
-
Okay, so I sent an unmanned rover to the Duna system, and at one point I tried to aerobrake high in Duna's atmosphere (I really didn't know what to expect with Duna's atmosphere, so I went the safe route and went high) over and over again, but eventually I got onto a collision course with Ike, sure, I could correct my trajectory and carry out the mission as planned, but I realized I could land on Ike instead, yet I'm not sure if I can get more science from Ike or Duna. With all this being said, Which one should I land on?

Can't you just time warp? Unless I have some contracts to do, I have no problem carrying out an 85 year mission with the help of time warp -

Btw should the ISRU be on the lander or can it be on the station? I have no idea how ISRU's work -

Thanks a million! Btw, if Minmus is the practical choice, why the Mun?
