  1. No one else interesed in taking on the challange ;(
  2. Alrighty, wasn't my best run but it wasn't my worst either I almost lost control when I realized my apoapsis was about 97.000 meters but I managed to correct before breaking 70.000 meters so the recording is still valid. I reached a speed of 2.056 m/s, that's roughly mach 6.042. So I was hypersonic! YAY! Max amount of gee's was 7.1 so very survivable. I didn't however spare my carrier craft, and I didn't land back at KSC so no bonus points for that. But still, a pretty decent flight. Here's the after action report:
  3. May he forever be the guiding spirit in the discovery to hour true calling as human beings. This one's for you Niel. (I don't have a crappy PC. I've distorted the photo's a little to create an authentic look. But I'm not quite sure it worked.)
  4. So, I'm guessing pretty much everyone on these forums is known with the North American X - 15. For those less familiar with this aircraft, it basically was an experimental rocketplane build in the 60's to reach new speeds on the edge between earth's atmosphere and space. I'll include a wiki link at the end. My challange is to (sort of) re-create the flights of this aircraft. Mostly because till this day the cold war, and all its experiments it brought forth, personally still fascinates me a lot. And the X - 15 flights were one of the first milestone's to be made public of that time. Secondly, because the (as of now) recently passed away spaceflight pioneer Niel Armstrong put his life on the line in this aircraft, reaching unknown zone's and establishing the foundation for space flight as we know it today. The Challange? Go as fast as you can! Here are the rules: - The aircraft must be carried by another craft that will take it to release altittude. Just like the B-52 carried the X-15 - The carrier craft must be jet powered, so no rocket engines. - The rocketplane that will be launched must be a rocket powered. You can decide for yourself wether it will be a solid rocket motor, or a liquid motor. - The rocketplane cannot go into full orbit, because that would make it a spacecraft. - The speed must be recorded untill a cieling of 70.000 meters. Beyond 70.000 meters is considered space, and therefore it is no longer a rocketplane, but a spacecraft. The following is allowed: - The rocketplane does not need active landing gear, but does have to survive the flight. - I used some parts from the NovaPunch remix pack, so those parts are allowed. - You can use any amount of kerbonauts flying your rocketplane. But it does have to be manned. - The rocketplane and carrier can be as big or as small as you like. This will earn you more respect and recognition from your fellow kerbonauts - Landing the craft back at KSC. - Reaching hypersonic speeds: the hypersonic range starts at mach 5, or 1701,45 meters per second. - Making sure that the carrier craft survives the fall back to the ground. MISSION FAILURE!: - When your kerbal(s) die(s). Note: I'm not such a math wizard nor a cold war expert so I don't know wether these rules are calibrated to the right size in relation to kerbin. Any comments on rule changes to more closely mimic the X-15 flight to the size of kerbin would be appreciated and implemented. I already build my craft and its looking pretty good if I do say so myself . I still have to do my run. When you do your's attach some pictures of your craft, I'm very curious as to see what kind of creative things will be thought up. And we can also learn from each other. Knowledge is hour greatest posession. Also attach a screenshot from the post flight results. Finally here's the X-15 wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_X-15 And some pictures of my craft:
  5. WOW!! Cool! How did you get those camera angles? Looks amazing 0.0
  6. Couple of questions: - How big are these craft gonna be in relation to the other parts. - How many will there be on release (like for instance space for 1 kerbal, or space for 3 kerbals being diffrent types)? - Are these supposed to be assembled by the player or are they one piece parts like the cockpits in KSP. - Are they supposed to be launched from the runway or the launchtower? - It's looking mighty fine , release date?
  7. Ooo ....I\'m liking the looks of this. I would be fantastic to see some shuttle\'s integrated into KSP. This could be especially interesting when you missions and currency are adde.
  8. Its ok, I\'ve got patience , I just wanted to know if you would continue updating and expanding the remix pack because I think its one of the best mods out there, and it would be a shame to drop a project with so much potential.
  9. Yeah, a lot of kids pretended to be superman, or batman, or GI Joe, or other tipical American superheroes when I was young. Not that there\'s anything wrong with that, those were awsome comics to. But what I find so attractive to Tin Tin to this day is its simplicity and its maturity. Tin Tin didn\'t have superpowers, or fancy gadgets, he was just a regular reporter who experienced the most amazing adventures. And everyone can relate and enjoy his stories.
  10. I have no idea what you are talking about, but I believe you
  11. So with all the new content coming and with all the new features that will be implemented in the next version of KSP (as of now v0.16). I was just speculating to myself, wondering, dreaming so to say, about what other possibility\'s of KSP could hold. One thing I\'d really like to see is the expansion of scientific stuff ;D, finding out more about the solar system. Being able to study planets with sattelites and sending rovers. Anyway, in this daydream I decided to travel.......to the Sun !!! As far as I know no-one ever tried this before, and I can honestly say, its not really that awsome. Secretly I was hoping for some kind of easter egg like the center of the galaxy in Spore as reward for travelling so far: So I was curious as to what would happen would one fly directly into the sun ;P Turns out the sun is a big hot thing that burns your spacecraft if you get to close, it just so happens that it has a big gravitational pull and emits a lot of light. Nevertheless it was a fun little adventure. And the coolest thing is, I think I may have broken some records in the process for overall distance travelled and highest speed achieved. And that is where my challange comes in in the hybrid suggestion for the dev\'s/challanged topic (dev\'s if you read this what I mean by that ofcourse is that I would like to see functional sattelites etc). Anyways, I would like to see what you guys would do to get to the sun. What kind of vessel did you use, what speeds did you achieve, let me know! Here are some screenshots that discribe my journey and the records that (I think) I broke: For my rocket I used only parts found in the Novapunch remix pack. It consisted of: #1 stage: 2x FL-T300 fuel tanks, 4x TiberDyne JF-1750 Solid Boosters, 1x 3M7X1 adapter plate with 7x M-50 Liquid fuel rocket engines, 1x RCST-300 RCS tank with 4x RV-105 RCS thruster blocks. #2 stage: 2x HH-78a large fuel tanks, 1x NERVA Mk. 1 Nuclear Thermal Rocket Engine, 1x RCS-175 RCS tank with again 4X RV-105 RCS thruster blocks. Then a M-38 unoccupied guidance system (we wouldn\'t want to burn our kerbals now would we ) as guidance. A vanilla Advanced S.A.S module, and a Platinum Communications Model BXs-9 for 'gathering scientific results'. Some statistics Total mission time: 34 days, 17 hours, 11 minutes, 19 seconds Highest speed achieved: 182.535 m/s, or mach 536.41 at sea level, or 0,060845% the speed of light. Total distacne travelled: 31.417.724.130 m, or 1/301129,3867th of a lightyear. Mind you, I deliberetly crashed into the sun because I wanted to see if it looked any diffrent up close, and what would happen if I would get really close. You can probably get higher speeds if you get in around an orbit. One more thing!! If you plan on trying this yourself, I suggest taking off at noon, when the sun is directly above your space craft. That way you only have to go straight up making maximal use of your fuel, and you don\'t need to preform any complex allignments.
  12. You know Tin Tin was a big part of my childhood and 'Destination Moon' was my favorite comic. If you want to do this right I\'d suggest reading it, or watching the animated version. For instance, in the comic the rocket used two engines. One was a liquid fuel engine like we see in most rockets. But that was just to get it off the pad and into space. Once a sufficient distance was reached, they would switch over to a nuclear powered engine. Adventures Of Tintin - Destination Moon
  13. Hello fellow space exploreres! I am fairly new to the KSP, I discovered it a couple of days ago during a lan party at a friends house. Anyway, I might have a littlebit of a stupid question if you don\'t mind. In the KSP teaser that is currently viewable on the KSP main page and on youtube ( <= that one) there is this clip very cool moon lander and kart. Yet I can\'t find it anywhere in my game. I am currently running version 0.13.3, and whenever I start the game it says there\'s a new version availible, 0.14.4, so I thought that version might have those parts. But I can never find version 0.14.4! Now I also see people with very cool mods n\'stuff with all new parts. So i was wondering if anyone could tell where I can get the latest version, or where I can download these mods and addons.
