Veteran players reminisce: What was your first Munar landing like?
opticalshadow replied to Tex's topic in KSP1 Discussion
my first muner landing? i think we had like, one fuel tank and one engine , hard to remember, wonder if i still have pics somewhere (if i do ill post them later) there was no landing gear, we had to use the stbalizing fins placed on the lowes possible pixle of the fuel tank so that it was all of two hairs farther down then the engine, and we had to land perfectly stright, on flat ground, with like ~3-4 mps i think, or it broke the fins and you wouldnt be able to get back to kerbin. it was hella fun, you had to quick save and quick load more then fallout 2, and it took a while to figure out. i think you could do the whole trip in like one engine and three fuel tanks or something (cant remember if that was because of a bug where fuel didnt drain correctly if engine power was low) -
I remember when i first played, we didnt have landing gear, and had to place our fins perfectly so they were just a hair taller then the engines, and we had to land just right so that it wouldt tip.

ive only stumped it twice, nematoads from doug, and Io, the overgod of forgotten realms lore. its figured out everything else. and now that i tought it those two, im stumped.

Parashutes for non-atmospher bodies? (Solar Chutes?)
opticalshadow replied to ky0breck's topic in KSP1 Discussion
i think what your looking for is rockets attached to long peices of strut -
im not actually sure how IP would work in this case, your not selling or distrubuting it, its a work of fan art.

there are peaceful uses for weapons too you know. from rifles for hunting, to missles lasers and cannosn for things like shooting dangerous debries that your space craft is unavoidably getting close to, removing large planetary bound ateroids from hitting you, rockets with payloads can be used for making pools (this is kerbal) a weapon isnt natively bad, offencive, or even militeristic, i can simply just be a tool used to do things. there are plenty of non violent reasons kerbals would build atleast missles and rocket payloads, without the intent on harm. their entire nature is built on riding a very thin line between stupid and lucky with a rocket program, are often credited with excitment of near misses, and relish sucess even in the face of major disater. kerbals are the race that would use a missle to make a swiming pool, they are the race the would use bottle rockets to try and shoot down flies, use and icbm to fish, or atom bomb on jool, just to see how pretty it would be. the idea that they need to be used offencivly is ignoreing their entire credited exsitence.

unless your leaving eve, there is no point to the aerospike, it got nerfed beyond use.

Why aren't we using nuclear thermal rockets?
opticalshadow replied to Temstar's topic in Science & Spaceflight
above all else id say political reasons. the fact a contrey will be using nuclear power of any kind makes people un easy, especially civilians who dont understand it. even with nuclear power plants, some contries are hard up to try and get nuclear power because of world sanction. the reason we dont use them are more because of people, and less because of the item themselves. -
Well i agree fully, it is a plane, and its by duna.
-
they also add 20% more cool.

Is there a car mod/spacecraft?
opticalshadow replied to hellothere231's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
well tosh's cart mod adds a few vehicles as well as decent framework for others. there are also sevral wheel kits out, its all in the mods released section -
VTOL planes can be made pretty easily with Damned Robotics.
-
looks clean and sleek, downloading now, havent been to duna yet so well see how well it is for a first timer.

Is there an advantage to a parking orbit?
opticalshadow replied to rflrob's topic in KSP1 Discussion
not to mention, for other things, such as meeting up with ships and stations for docking, having a parking orbit will make life tremendously easier. -
you can use lander legs to make a claw, or use the claw mod to add one. damned robotics adds enough parts to make custom claw types. the dockign mods are usful for this, though they need to have been built with the docking parts. vanillia your best bet is to make a claw with lander legs, abnd try to get it back into orbit. theres a video on youtube somewhere where a guy broke his engine off on the Mun, so he built a claw ship out of legs, flew to the mun, "docked" the other ship, then took off and landed safely at KSC.

mechjeb is useful beyond just auto piolting around the galaxy. mechjeb provides alot of numbers that are usful (such as angles, the vessle info is useful for fine tuning) basic calculations can be doen thanks to it. and as ive posted earlier, as someone who loves to keep tuning something till its as good as it gets, the auto pilot is great for that. i can put a rocket into near perfect circuler orbit on my own (within 1 km reliably) but everytime i fly, i cant garrente that ill hit the stages at teh saem time, ill turn the angles at the same time, ill be on the exact same degree everytime. using mechjeb takes out the humen variation in tuning, it allows me to fly the rocket on a set method everytime withiout variation. IRL cars do this with a DYNA machine. i prefer to fly by hand, i dont even us SAS when i can help it, and since .17 ive been trying to fly solely inside IVA, but mechjeb is still importent for testing and tuning. if i can improve my design so that it (which flys incredibly inefficent) even a hundred units of fuel, that means when i fly outside of kerbins SOI, it will compound, these are the calculations that let you get to whereever you want.

Show off your awesome KSP Pictures
opticalshadow replied to Capt'n Skunky's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Someone told him that he had his priorities out of order, he proceeded to announce that this was merely the beginning of a massive Mun-base, and then promptly called up Bob and demanded he build a habitat module and fly it to the Mun. Meanwhile, Jeb wallows on Eve, wondering whether he'll ever return to Kerbin. that triple launch is amazing, and makes me super jelly i have not yet even put one of them bad boys in space yet...still just got my terrible rover. -
no, it was specifically spelled le-a and she made a hgue point in makign sure people knew it was pronounced luh dash uh, i know its stupid.
-
better then the women who named her child le-a (luh dash uh)
