It was time for a new Forum Avatar, and thus I present to you: the first real life Holographic Kerbal Ideal for those long-term missions, where room for snacks is limited.
-
For the sake of straying from the topic of green Kerbals: there are a few protozoans which have endosymbiotic bacteria, or even complete algae within their cell (they're still just an animal, not plants as well). Also think of coral reefs: sponges and corals also have symbiotic algae (not sure about bacteria), although these do not have them within their actual cells. In general: if you can think of it, nature's already gone ahead and done it (and probably done it better than you ever could).

True, It's unlikely they could live on photosynthesis alone. They would need so much more energy than can be provided by photosynthesis alone (which, and this is just my guess, equals about two apples per day, if they'd sunbathe naked all day). Even so, there is a sea-slug which steals the chloroplasts from the algae it eats, and apparently with those it can survive on light and CO2 (and water) for about 9 months (after which they die of old age). Edit: I can imagine Jeb, Bill and Bob having their last meal on Kerbin before blasting off, consisting of lot's of algae. "Let's eat untill we're green!" Edit 2: Maybe they just eat when they are working, and on the 1-year trip to Duna (I'm no good at transfer windows) they enter a sort of vegetative state.

Holy Thread Revival! Anyway, while studying, I bumped into this one: Towards Synthetic Chloroplasts. The gist of it is, they made a photosynthetic bacteria capable of living inside eukaryotic (animals are eukaryotic) cells. Theoretically, Kerbal Science could have succeeded into inserting chloroplast-like bacteria into their Kerbalnaughts (probably while they were still embryos), eliminating the need (and cost) of bringing food on long space-trips. They could live on Light, CO2 and Water. And some supplement-pills for essential minerals. They would need a lot (and I mean a lot) of water though: to produce a single sugar-molecule they'd need six water molecules.

Naming scheme for your ships! (0.24 edition)
Speijker replied to mangekyou-sama's topic in KSP1 Discussion
My projects are in alphabetical order, and in a Latin dictionary I just take the first animal name that pops up, and then just number them. So there's the Aquila I, II, III, IV, the Ballaena series, Cammarus, Dammula, Ebulum (like that name), Favilla (Flaming SSTO, no animal name), Grus. Never got further than those after starting a new save, but the system does generate some cool names. -
My first SSTO Spaceplane (stock, excepting Kerbpaint) to succesfully establish Kerbin orbit (with enough fuel to get back). Even after missions to Duna and Jool, I never could get the SSTO thing done right.

I'd love to have custom Kerbals too! Currently I'm using this not only because colours make everything look better (if you're going to be the first to crash land on another planet one might as well do it in style), but also to differentiate between players' ships in my play-by-dropbox game. That said: love the colours of my space-station.

Kerbin and Mün rising above Minmus: Taken from the Cammarus Space Station (stock, except the Kerbpaint mod):

Gentlemen: a link to the forum topic containing (almost) all old versions which was mentioned two posts above. Landing on the Mün with neither landing gear (using winglets on decouplers) nor maneuver nodes is especially challenging

I for one think this is a great idea. I find Apomune easier to say than Apoapsis of Munar Orbit. As long as the names are clear (so you don't need a dictionary to know which celestial body is being orbited), it conveys more information than just "Apoapsis". Also, it sounds more sciency (and as a scientist, I do love awesome names). "Jeb! You're Peridune pass is becoming dangerously similar to a lithobreaking maneuver!" is something I'd love to hear. Also, as a reference: the real names. Edit: also, maybe Apopol and Peripol sounds better? Both in pronounciation and clarity...

Jebediah forget to put parachutes on his craft (again). So, after Jeb was rescued, Bob had to clean up his mess (he does like clean skies). The craft didn't have a docking port, but that didn't stop Bob, who deorbited the debris in a beautifull James Bond Villain style (and completely stock parts as well). And here's a mission overview. I was surprised it worked, but work it did; I half expected it to blow up in my face (and consequently, in Bob's as well). The SAS did seem to have some trouble compensating for the extra mass. I'm wondering if it has influence on the fuel necessary to de-orbit. Now, if we could find some asteroids, we're ready to bring them in Kerbin orbit!

I'm uncertain as to wether this has been on the forums yet, but I felt I needed to share a cool video. The real thing fared far better then my own Duna experience (we'll always remember those Kerbals who give their lives for Science!). And a link to the original Article.

Made a new flag design (which I'm very pleased about; also made a centralized version, just in case we ever get to paint our flags on the side of our rockets), and perfected my Simple Münar Lander (which has become quite efficient).

I'd really like to have the mask (thanks for taking the effort to post the mask). However, the link you posted wants to download more than 50MB to my computer?
-
Best Pirate-flag so far, in my opinion! And a good flag overall as well
-
Didn't post the image directly, because of the Easteregg *SPOILER* in the *SPOILER*. But I didn't want to deprive you of a cool flag-planting picture. So click here (or don't, if you don't want your easteregghunt experience ruined) to see my first succesfull rover-plane with sufficient range. Now it's ready to be sent to Duna, and Laythe.

In imitation of the above, and after seeing the name mentioned somewhere on the forum, I quickly threw this together: This should be on a mining colony at Eve, because that's where we gather the secret ingredient that makes the taste so Kerbalicious

Mine's the Pathfinder Company, or 探路公å¸. (I hope that's written right, somebody please correct me if it's wrong.) Originally a fuel exploration Company, it has expanded into fuel mining and production and new technologies research, and is currently developing it's private space program in order to exploit extra-kerbinal resources. Think early Weyland-Yutani Corporation.

Switzerland, where are you going with Swedens' flag? Edit: nevermind, they gave it back . Nice work, by the way.

Gimp, Inkscape, Illustrator, Photoshop, Xara, Paint Shop Pro, MS Paint - any of these will do. Best free vector based program for creating logos like flag designs etc is Inkscape, with Gimp for altering raster (blended pixel) based screenshots/photos for use in backgrounds or whatever. Incidently, I posted a few links to Gimp and Inkscape earlier (my personal favourites in free drawing programs). What nats said: draw logo's in Inkscape, and mix them together with Gimp for some awesome effects. And google (or any other search engine) is your best friend if you don't know how to use these programs (or any drawing program, for that matter).

A spacerace between the Kerbals and these guys would probably still be a neck and neck race. Who else thinks the Minions are almost as awesome as the Kerbals? Also, Gru Laboratories KSP-flag:

I saw some people asking about GIMP, and how to find things. There's a lot of good tutorials (and a lot more less good ones) on the internet. I don't know if this is helpfull, but this is where I started looking when drawing flags: Click. GIMPs' own site also has a lot of information, but might be hard to find (but a good way to find out what a certain tool exactly does). Also, I usually hand-draw my idea on paper, and in Inkscape trace the individual elements (just add a photograph of your drawing on the bottom layer, and trace in a new layer using paths/vectors). Here is a good concise tutorial, This one is also good, but just googling what you want to achieve works very well. After exporting the Inkscape drawings, I import them in Gimp and put them together as a whole, and edit it with filters. Together, those programs are quite powerfull. Most important to learn are working with creating and editing path, especially how to curve them (for simple pictures, try using "Trace Bitmap" in Inkscape). I'm just an amateur hobbyist, so my apologies if this takes up precious flag-showing space.

First draft of the flag for my Pathfinder Company (探路公å¸). Can't wait to plant this all over the universe. The Chinese Seal Script looks both cool, and (at least, for me as a non-chinese european) has a nice alien look to it! I just hope I wrote the chinese characters right, and it doesn't say something embarassing... Edit: a flag only starts looking good when flying in the wind.

Part generator Version 2.X release / open beta
Speijker replied to Lando's topic in KSP1 Tools and Applications
This looks shiny! Finally I can write my name on my ships and stations, so all kerbals may know who build this most awesome contraption. Maybe it should be a default stock feature? A textbox on parts, so you can write something on the side, like NASA or ESA does
