By 2020 we will have a moon base and it will be american
Enture replied to notoriousbkp's topic in The Lounge
Oh, how I'd love to be able to believe you! But I cant' see what makes you think so high of the EU's economical drive and vision for space exploration... seriously, economically we're screwed at the moment, and it's only getting worse, and if there's one thing ESA has always lacked, it's a clear political will when it comes to manned spaceflight. I mean, don't get me wrong, we build among the world's best rockets, but their main use is commercial, not scientific/governmental, and even less human spaceflight, their's never been a strong will for this at a european level, and I can't see one coming in the near future... so please tell us, what makes you so optimistic about european manned spaceflight? -
Now, that's not exactly a super "crazy" mishap, but undoubtedly a very funny one.. Here we go: Third attempt at a munar landing; Jeb is the pilot of the Thorondor lander, Munar deorbit burn is completed successfully, and the crew of three is preparing for a nice targeted landing... when 1500m above the ground, upon deploying the landing struts, Jeb realizes the engineers back at KSC only assembled one of the three required struts! Emergency mission abort follows -despite Jeb's protests-, and some days later a couple of engineers "spontaneously" volunteered to test some of the KSC's newest spaceplanes designs.

Mh....

So, remember I said I was willing to use this idea on my upcoming missions?... Here we go! After a successful landing on the Far Side of the Mun, the crew of the Kerner von Braun mission stepped on the surface for their first EVA. For the first time, lander-mounted cameras recorded the whole event: Commander Harford Kerman became a Mun Veteran on this mission (2 landings): Erdbin Kerman joined him soon after: «about 8 feet to go, chap!» Bonus: the EVA really became awesome when the Amandil-1 crewed Reconnaissance Orbiter flew almost directly over the landing site, 4km above (closest approach: 7km). «Jumping won't be enough to join them, Ed, calm down.»
-
Third and final part of my 1st rescue mission: The landing! The crew of four made it back safely to Kerbin, landing in the middle of a valley, in one of the planet's highests mountain ranges... at dawn The munar ascent part made me think, though: what's the most fuel-efficient way to make the trip Munar surface -> Kerbin? I'm sure the subject's been discussed somewhere already, but I can't seem to find it... EDIT: those two command modules definitely look like ASTP!

How To Do A Mun Rescue?

Haha, that last part... sums up most of our KSP adventures quite nicely, doesn't it? -

Thanks for the upload, that's really looking promising! I'll have to wait until tomorrow to have a look though, I need some sleep right now... -
Thanks, I'm starting to make my little collection of mods, I heard of this one before, but never thought of using it this way, on a planetary probe... it's awesome, therefore I'm going to shamelessly "steal" the idea Anyway, back on topic: «Bob! They worried about you, Bill & Jeb, back at KSC, so they decided I'd come and pick you up... Come on in!»

How To Do A Mun Rescue?
Enture replied to littlebeagle's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I know you asked how to do a stock-only rescue mission, but I couldn't stress enough the awesomeness of the Crew Tank mod: basically, it's a 400L fuel tank with enough room for 5 Kerbals to take place in! Give it a shot, installing it literally takes 2 clicks. -
Wow! May I ask you what mods you used for this?

Wow. This idea, right there: Kerbol System rendered in Celestia... GENIUS! Great job, it really gives a first feeling of what we can expect! Do you plan to upload it to the Celestia Motherlode or anything? -
Funny you should mention that, cause I just managed to land my first rescue mission ever, just under 5km from the stranded Kerbstantin Tsiolkovsky lander and crew (none other than Jeb, Bill and Bob)
-
I checked, and so far we have 38 Munar landing entries (6 of which trying to recreate more accurately the Apollo-11 mission) and 4 other contributions. That is, a total of 48 entries! That's awesome
-
So today I was fine-tuning my new Munar rocket, cause my last two munar missions were both very tight on fuel... and then this happened: That's right, I ended up landing on Minmus, completely unforeseen. But wait, there's more! ...they have a full tank to return. But wait, there's even MOAR!That also was my first precision landing, only 400m away from that cliff I was aiming for, looking over a frozen lake... Samgard Kerman went there by RCS during the first EVA. So yeah. I may have slightly overdone this fine-tuning thing...
-
Yep, neither of Kerbin's moons has any atmosphere of any kind. 100% guaranteed void of space I myself have a reconnaissance mission in a 4km orbit around the Mun since two weeks or so, didn't lost an inch of altitude (although the Space Kraken tried to meddle in the mission a couple of times at the start)

Wow, all those great pictures that came in overnight (it's 9am here in Germany), I'm impressed! I personally would give extra kudos to: -Howitzer, for the great Minmus-Kerbin-Mun picture -UtterN, for his LM-like lander -Togfox, for landing at the precise Tranquillity Base coordinates (I bet you we should come back in 0.17 to find some kind of easter egg here) -Ddavis, for the Kerbin pic -Bluejayek for his mission profile -Jupo and OdinYggd for their 1st Mun landing on that occasion (I was in the same situation) But to each his way to make his tribute, I love all of the pics I saw this far... Keep it up!
-
It's great to see all those pictures coming in, keep it up ans spread the word! Here goes my entry: It's one small step for a man... Harford Kerman, commander of the Neil Kerbstrong mission. Lift-off the Helcar rocket. TMI burn. What a view! The complete crew on EVA. Farewell Neil, now you can fly back again to the Moon...
-
So it was just announced: Neil Armstrong passed away. This is a sad day for all of us. Obviously, what I propose isn't a challenge proper, but I think it has its place here: I propose that all of us that have the possibility launch a Mun mission today, as soon as possible, to commemorate Neil Armstrong's deeds 43 years ago. This worldwide "simultaneous" Mun mission will be our small tribute to honor his memory. I'm getting started right away. Who's in, fellow rocketeers? Don't forget to post a screenshot of your memorial landing! And godspeed Neil. EDIT: As of today (August 27th, 2pm UTC), already 48 persons to part to this challenge!

Oh yeah, that's a smart idea! I'll try it and let you know how it went. -
A 'to scale' image of Kerbin and it's Natural Satellites
Enture replied to Boex's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Nice idea, and nicely done! Plus it sums up most of the stuff one need to plan missions and design ships... Ever considered creating one of those very, very long pictures with planetary sizes AND distances to scale? (like this one for our SolSys) That'd be amazing! -
Mun Landing Final Descent Tutorial
Enture replied to AncientAstronaut's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Thanks for that little vid! After having seen it, I dumped my 2-stage lander concept, and opted for a more slick design: I dumped the RCS propulsion systems, and added a 4th landing leg. And here we go,the Kerbert Einstein mission was the first to successfully land on the Mun! However, I fear I'm too tight on my remaining ∆v to make the trip back home: used up too much fuel during capture and descent, which leaves me with a mere 856m/s ∆v. Should I go for it? What is the most ∆v-efficient way to come back: direct ascent, or turning around the Mun? -
First entirely successful munar landing! (i.e. without having the lander tipping over upon touchdown). Here's an illustrated report: The new Thorondor II lander touched down 50km south of the stranded Kerbstantin Tsiolkovsky mission. A possible meetup of both crews is being studied Dunsel Kerman got out the capsule first, followed by his crewmates for this mission, Dudlin and Wilsy Kerman.
