1. I hope it does go big. I feel that it could inspire the future generations as to space travel, and maybe, a few decades down the road, we will finally put as much effort into space travel as we once did. Plus it would help Squad out so much, and I would love to see what projects they decide to work on in the future. Watch out Bethesda and Activision, there's a new game dev company in town, and this one is the most passionate as of yet!
2. With the release of Kerbal on Steam a few months ago, to the recent sale this weekend, I have been monitoring the number of Steam players online at one time. I usually would see appr. 2500-3000 players at one time on the community hub, but was taken aback at 6277! I know it's no Skyrim yet, but I'm glad to see that it's moving along in the right direction. Hopefully it will be a few orders of magnitude larger a year from now! Just thought y'all would be interested in this awesome number. Cheers!
3. I know it couldn't happen anytime soon, but KSP Lego's! VAB and SPH parts that you can link together and built ships and whatnot with like in the game!
4. Check the home page, they just released limited edition Bill, Bob and Jeb 3D prints from Shapeways for $47
5. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe that the gravity is .05 g. That would make it the same as Gilly, and I know that I can walk around on Minmus much more easily than Gilly.
6. Docking isn't going to be implemented for a while. The devs want to polish what they have so far first. They want to hold off on docking so that when they do put it in, it is full on docking that isn't just connected ships, but can also pass fuel and Kerbonaughts through (which I'm assuming means that moving around whilst performing IVA's will need to come first)
7. After a few failed attempts I was able to EVA onto Gilly. The trick is to land on one of the lower points. Its ridiculous just how low the gravity is though, just taking a step sends you flying for 10 meters and you jump over 300 meters high!!!
8. I went looking around online and I couldn't find any KSP paraphernalia!!! I know its an indie game, and the player base isn't at absolutely gargantuan values, yet but I hope that in the future Squad partners up and starts to roll out the brand name. (They have an incredibly aesthetic logo) I would love to see T-shirts, Lunch boxes, heck even children's toys! How cool would it have been if when you were a kid, with your tub of lego's and lincon logs, you had a tub of rocket and space plane parts that you could put together like in the game and let your imagination go wild! I know some of these aspirations are somewhat far-fetched, but diversification is key to brand recognition. I want others to reply to this thread with their thoughts on this, and even ideas for things that could be branded, or just how to get the brand name out there.
9. Just do some snooping around youtube, and the welcome aboard section. There is some differentiation in terms, such as "pro-burn", which is also pro-grade, or even forward. There are also various other items listed below. decoupler- staging unit used to separate used part of a rocket to reduce weight winglet- fins used on the rocket while in the atmosphere to maintain the rocket on a straight trajectory and to give a higher level of control RCS- (reaction control surface) multi direction rockets placed about the vehicle to allow better control in space SAS- (Stability Augmentation System, Spin Auto-Stabilizer, Sickness Avoidance Solution. Whatever you choose to call it, it makes the ship stop spinning around.(courtesy of the ksp wiki) Also helps to maintain a heading while you do other things. SOI- Sphere of influence, celestial body that has predominate gravitational influence over you Apogee or Apoapsis (Your largest displacement in your trajectory from your SOI) Perigee or Periapsis (Your smallest displacement in your trajectory from your SOI) Normal- Facing Northward Antinormal- Facing Southward Delta-V- Change in velocity Drag- Level of air resistance a part has Thrust to Weight Ratio- ratio of thrust to weight which must be over 1 in order to achieve liftoff Gravity Turn- The process of transferring from liftoff, to orbit by means of turning into the direction that you wish to begin to orbit Gravity Assist- Using a pass by a celestial body to augment your trajectory Gravity Well- The gravitational field surrounding a celestial object Oberth Effect- Principal based on gravitational fields that states that since gravity grows stronger the closer you get to an object, that it requires more delta-V to alter your trajectory inward the closer you are to a planet and vice-versa. Also shows that when orbiting slowly far from an object, you can cause great changes in your trajectory with much less delta-V EVA- Extra Vehicular Activities, anything performed outside of the spacecraft by the Kerbinaught IVA-Inner Vehicular Activities, anything performed inside of the spacecraft by the Kerbinaught Monolith- Easter eggs planted throughout the game Impulse- change in momentum of an object There are probably quite a few more that I left out, but this should help to get you started. The terminology in this game follows relatively closely to the lingo used in actual space exploration, so study up on that and you should be good to go. Also there seems to be a trend of players dubbing things with the first letter K, or the prefix Ker, just so you know (i.e. Kerpollo 11) Good luck, and I hope you fall as in love with this game as the rest of the community and myself have!
10. Go to kerbal.net and download the DEMV mod. Its just a bigger cart with a way larger payload, and should be able to get you into the water pretty easily via the same method that you were using before.
11. Here's a video that just came from the great and genius, Scott Manley. I would also suggest going through and watching the rest of his videos, which will teach you all of the tricks for space travel.
12. I played stock for months, did all that I could with it, but now I use MechJeb, mainly for the most time consuming tasks like circularizing orbits, or warping to apogee. The true altitude is also a must.
13. Bam! Kerbin setting from the Mun!
14. I decided to take my current lander design, (Ripper 04), on a test run to see how it would handle interplanetary missions, which it did like a charm, and was able to take it around the Sun, land back at Kerbin, take-off again, orbit the mun, touch down on Minmus for a moment, and then land back at KSC within the big circle around the launchpad. On another mission to test my lander design I was able to take it to the Mun, then precision land by a Rover on Minmus, back to the Mun by two other landers (which is pictured), and then back to Minmus, only to land within 60km of KSC.
15. Upon my return from a simulated interplanetary mission (Thanks Scott Manley) to test my current lander, while panning around the screen I glimpsed this and took a screenshot. Upon confirmation from my map display, that Minmus and the Mun were in fact lined up in that manner. From the bottom with home sweet home, Kerbin, to the middle conglomeration of but a few black pixels that make up the Mun, to the top, with just a single blinking pixel to represent Minmus. This pick really shows our insignificance in even a simulated universe.
16. I'm a senior this year, and I also participate in Academic Decathlon, and it just so happens that the Science subject this year is space exploration. The leg up this incredible game has given me in this completion is awesome, not to mention I'm having a "blast" learning! I have been torn between theoretical physics and aerospace engineering as a future career, but this game has brought out my true passion for rockets!
17. Got to love good old relativity
18. His evidence is modern chemistry and physics. You did not give any information to support your hypothesis that it would melt, so why should he. The core would not melt because of the pressure of matter above it, but it would melt because of the heat caused by the pressure. If you look a just about any phase change diagram, with higher pressure comes higher melting, boiling, and sublimation points. So if the pressure was high enough, it would keep it from melting despite the increase in temperature until you got to the critical point. Granted it may be liquid, but your incorrect supporting science invalidates that part of your argument.
19. From what I have seen, it has been the general norm for fellow Kerbanauts to replicate the doings of the space administration, such as, first trying to get an orbit, then geostationary orbit, and mapping orbits, and space stations, followed by extraterrestrial travel to the Moon's of the home planet, and as I am very willing to guess, exploration of the rest of the Kerbol system with the release of version 0.17, which is all fine and dandy, but what I want to know is will the evolution of this game, and the way it's players interact with it affect actual space programs whether they are nationally funded or private companies. My guess is absolutely. With a slightly whimsical but very realistic space simulator it allows the general population of the world to venture into space and bring forth many new awesome ideas for space exploration. What I want to see on this thread is members of the community posting there new innovative ideas for the future of KSP, and maybe even the future of actual space travel. For example, an idea of mine is a comet probe that locks into a comet and rides around the system, asteroidial colonies of Kerbinaughts that hop from asteroid to asteroid mining, and maybe even the establishment of planet busting by the means of erecting large engines on an asteroid, changing its orbit in order to cause it to collide with another planet. These are just a few very quickly thought out ideas, and I would love to see many more
20. What's really intresting is that I am able to get it to go from gliding at 100m/s at 50m, to gliding at 200m/s at 13000m! But thanks for the heads up as to the glitches name!
21. After downloading the 0.16 update, I built a space plane that I dubbed the Hexwing. It generates crazy amounts of lift and whatnot, and it's all stock parts, but what I noticed is that if you kill the engines, or in my case run out of fuel, and just do loops, you continually gain momentum. You can then go and gain altitude to begin this process again but with the ability to gain more velocity. I also noticed that since this craft has such a stupid amount of lift, if I leave it at about a 5 degree inclination while still gliding, it will actually slowly accelerate while still gaining altitude! It's a cool bug I found, and I strongly encourage all of you to try it. It would also be awesome if anybody could provide an explanation for why this happens, like how is the code written that generating so much lift would overcome all drag and accelerate you upwards, while gravity pulls you downwards.
