  1. Came back to the game and decided to finish a contract requiring me to land a science lab on Minmus. Dropped it next to my mining outpost and I'm planning to try to hook them up later when I land a science rover on Minmus.
  2. These *are* Kerbals we are talking about, they are probably just future proofing against the day when wings are strapped to the trucks for makeshift spaceplanes.
  3. Oh, I have engineers, and I did my surface scan after I was confused about the low percentage of ore. It just caught me off guard because I was thinking I was going to need multiple refineries for my two drills and level three engineer, and instead I wasn't getting very much ore at all. I landed at the wrong spot due to lack of fuel and I was getting 5% fuel at that random spot. I'll move my drill to the 9% patch, and I guess just land a few more drills to connect up with it. I'm planning to make a massive minmus base before 1.1 comes out, and I just thought I had messed up how ore worked or something.
  4. So I've been been setting up a mining base on Minmus in my career game and I'm currently very confused. I sent up a survey ship and found an area that had a cutoff of 80% on Minmus, so I built a mining station and set it up there. It wasn't doing so well so I landed a rover to do some surface scanning, and after driving around for about an hour I haven't found any section over 9 percent (I landed in an 7.8% zone randomly). What gives?
  5. That seemed to help. I did a small redesign today and now it works. I pitch up to 25 degrees leaving the runway, then at 5k I switch on the rockets and that gets me to orbit. Also from all the advice I realized that I was lacking thrust, which ended up making a big difference. Here is the final version, in which I forgot people to pilot my lander... Oops.
  6. I don't have the science for that. Also I've messed around before and a it just doesn't fit. You end up with most of it sticking out and it looks ugly. It's why I used this style pre 1.0. It was the only way to build a plane that held my type of lander.
  7. Any ideas how to launch a tripod lander like that without so much drag? I messed around with a fairing, but it seemed even worse for drag.
  8. This is what I'm trying to do. I used similar lifters to great effect pre 1.0. but now with the new jets I can't get them to work. My old strategy was to sit at around 16k and build up speed, then use rockets to go the rest of the way. However this no longer seems to work as I can't seem to build up as much speed any more, and even up past 25k the fact that my rockets keep draining my forward tanks means my plane keeps losing stability. Fuel lines don't seem to allow me to program how my tanks are emptied anymore, and I am at my wits end. So help a guy out here. What am I doing wrong? Do note that this is vanilla career and I don't want to download any mods because that feels like cheating.
  9. What I get from your post is that you are a very experienced player that needs to play on hard with custom difficulty. If you can go anywhere with that low level tech, you don't even need the higher tech levels. You've already beat the game. for myself I'm having a hard time with this because I used to focus on space planes and farm enough science to use them for most of the career. With the changes to how science works I can no longer unlock the turbojet and am pretty much stuck in LKO and atmo. Also if you want to make us go further, than you have to remove all the science from minmus and the moon, because when I finally made it to minmus (in 0.9) I collected enough science to unlock the entire tree with 2000+ left over.
  10. I just wish they would make up their minds. I was finally getting a handle on 1.0 and made 2 test SSTO's and this update hits and it killed them. It also made my normal difficulty career mode a bit harder. Now I'm going to have to redesign everything all over again. >.<
  11. Tried out something a little different this time I'm not sure this has any purpose, but I wanted to see how fast I could go with the new aerodynamic model. If you look you'll notice that my ascent actually used ablation, while my decent didn't.
  12. So the game does think it is sub orbital. Any idea how to fix that? [Edit] So I messed around with my orbit and I found that if your periapsis is below 50,000 you are considered sub orbital even though there is no atmosphere to slow you down. Odd.
  13. had been flying around Duna for a while when I noticed this Some how I managed to orbit Duna, without actually orbiting Duna. I would like to fix this if I can because I invested a lot of my money in this mission. I can recover, but it will require grinding instead of pushing forward. Any help would be appreciated. (Note, I took out the contract 3 in game years before I went to Duna, so it shouldn't be a timing issue.)
  14. I managed to take off without rcs. Landing the thing though is hard because you have to keep moving at about 150m/s to have a hope of staying airborn.
  15. I was messing around with space planes and jet engines when I found out that I could actually take off without any wings at all. Unfortunately I wasn't able to land, but maybe you can do better. Rules are simple. It must take off horizontally, land horizontally and have no wings. Bonus points for landing on the runway!
  16. Well, I finally did it. I have a SSTO. Unfortunately I messed up my reentry and ended up a long way from where I wanted to. But I did make it down safely. I'll post a couple pics here, but I have a few idea's for a redesign that I am going to try.
