Or a 3rd option. Get a Linux Distro, you can make it look like anything and its free.
-
If you want Windows 7, You will be throwing ~$90USD into the mix. making neither in your budget.
-
Well, I cant say that you can find anything high end without Windows 8 thrown in the mix. So now your at the mercy of Win 8, you can make it bearable and act like 7 to an extent. See Here:

Laptops for school use rather than performance? A little netbook would do you fine for surfing/notes in all honesty. Battery life for anything above a Low end I3 or Celeron is going to be slight issue, for example my K53E with its mid-end I5 gets about 6 hours of battery life. But if you absolutely want to be able to play just about anything (including KSP) on the go I would get the ASUS. ASUS's ROG line has a killer reputation for Quality and Performance for the money. If you step down to an I3 you loose a lot of the "Gaming" applications, which I am assuming the OP wants to keep.

I just compared the two and for the budget of $1,000, I would get the ASUS over the Alienware. You get more performance for your money. For $949 you can have the ASUS with a 750GB HDD and a 128GB SSD, 8GB Ram, a good clocked I5, and a killer Graphics card. For $999 from Dell you get a 500GB HDD no SSD, 6GB Ram, a low end I5, and a Graphics card (ASUS) http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+14%22+Laptop+-+8GB+Memory+-+750GB+Hard+Drive+-+Black/6775259.p?id=1218806576744&skuId=6775259&ref=25&loc=SHP&srccode=cii_45538312&cpncode=33-147594600-2#tab=specifications (Alienware) http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-m14x-r2/pd

Gaming or Laptop, You only get to choose one. I am a university student also, It is very convenient to have a laptop. If you wanted a high end laptop for that price you couldn't go wrong with an ASUS G46VW (http://rog.asus.com/notebook/14-2/g46vw/). You can get a nicely spec'd one with an I5 in your price range. A little more can get you an I7. But I wouldn't get an I7 if you going to use it for class and such. It comes standard with a 128GB SSD and at minimum a 500GB HDD, so it will boot very quickly. The Graphics card is a GTX660M. Here are results from Bing Shopping (http://www.bing.com/shopping/asus-14-8gb-memory-750gb-hard-drive-black-g46vwbhi5n43/p/32A0E77173FC61085012?q=ASUS+G46VW&lpf=0&lpq=ASUS%2bG46VW&FORM=EGCA&lppc=16) I wouldn't recommend alienware to anyone, not anymore. I am using an ASUS K53E with an I5, It is very good and has never let me down. What are the specs of your desktop?

This is a Fairly good Article that will spur along this forum, Take a minute and read it. http://notrickszone.com/2012/10/05/german-meteorologist-on-temperature-models-so-far-they-are-wrong-for-all-atmospheric-layers/ Good stuff here. @ TWw1 Please dont tell us you seriously think ideologies as destructive as the Kyoto Protocol and Carbon Credits are a good thing.

A little off topic but as we continue talking about SSDs and how bigger is better. I keep thinking of Admiral Jackie Fisher during WWI lobbying parliment for more Dreadnaught Battle Ships. First he said "We only need 2 to beat the germans", then his commanders said "You know what?, 4 sounds good to us.", When it finially got to the cabinet memebers they were screaming in Parliment "We Want Eight, and We Cant Wait!"

I should probably look into the kingston's some more. After reading a little more about the Sandforce controller, I would rather spend ~$20 more for a good quality product than have to deal with a possible headache. Thanks for the advice.

Im using a ASUS Republic of Gamers Crosshair V Formula-Z Motherboard, all of its ports are the SATA 6.0
-
It should work for that. If you can spend a little more on the GPU maybe get an EVGA GTX650, Its a big step from the 7770 and is ~$45USD more. http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-video-card-02gp42653kr
-
Looks like a good list. What do you plan to do with it?
-
Im assuming that if i use a HDD now i could clone my OS and things onto the SSD down the road. Cloning should work as there wouldnt be a hardware change from drive to drive.

Page is not found. try the BB code markup for it from pcpartpicker.

Helping the poor in a better way than unemployment benefits

A little off topic but, taxpayer money that didnt go to the federal reserve debt? and instead was used for the american people? Ill take that any day of the week. Please look up the real purpose of the federal reserve and youll see the New Deal was good. "will try to give you new and strange names for what we are doing. Sometimes they will call it 'Fascism,' sometimes 'Communism,' sometimes 'Regimentation,' sometimes 'Socialism'. But, in so doing, they are trying to make very complex and theoretical something that is really very simple and very practical.... Plausible self-seekers and theoretical die-hards will tell you of the loss of individual liberty. Answer this question out of the facts of your own life. Have you lost any of your rights or liberty or constitutional freedom of action and choice?" - Franklin Delano Roosevelt -
I dont know how bad shipping will be, It should be reasonably good. I would put a little more into the GPU. The 7770 is pretty good but for a little more you can get a GTX 660.In reference to SSDs, this would be a better alternative than? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147192 Its in the same price range as the scandisk.

Im thinking of investing in an SSD. What would you SSD users Recommend? I was thinking something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=20-171-567&IsVirtualParent=1

Helping the poor in a better way than unemployment benefits

I love the premise of the New Deal. Give the unemployed the task of rebuilding/maintaining our current infrustructure. A creative Solution to an otherwise difficult problem. -
Semantics Aside, Back to computers. The FX series of AMD Processors are very nice.
-
Lots of good Info in that post. My RAM arrived in the mail, All I have left to get is the Case, HDD, CD Drive, and The OS.

I couldnt imagine watercooling being as hard as everyone says watercooling is. Assuming you use good quality parts and take your time.
-
You could modify an automobiles electric radiator fan. Ive noticed that a Volvo electric radiator fan is just big enough for most Mid towers. If someone could get creative with the splicing of cables it would be the end all to computer cooling.
-
Any Advice for someone who would get into watercooling?
-
So i ~had~ a few PC parts just laying around collecting dust.
